    Atlantis Focuses On Wraith

The upcoming fifth season of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis will focus heavily on the Wraith--with a side trip to Las Vegas to commemorate the show's 100th episode, producers told SCI FI Wire during a visit to the show's sets in Vancouver, Canada, on May 16. (Spoilers ahead!)

Other key developments: Teyla (Rachel Luttrell) will have her baby in the fifth season. The character became pregnant last season to accommodate Luttrell's real-life pregnancy. Luttrell has given birth, so her character can follow suit. The baby is delivered on camera by Dr. McKay (David Hewlett). (Inside word is it's a boy!)

Teyla also sees her abilities get out of hand in an episode in which she touches the mind of a Wraith Queen, which activates her Wraith DNA. According to Luttrell, Teyla "embodies" the Wraith Queen--the actress will appear in full Wraith makeup--and becomes "the leader of an alliance of Wraith."

Also look for the return of the Wraith-worshipping Satedan Tyre (Mark Dacascos) in an episode in which he captures Ronon (Jason Momoa) and attempts to sacrifice him to the Wraith. Ronon is given so much Wraith enzyme in the episode that he gives in completely to his dark side and apparently does some serious damage to Sheppard (Joe Flanigan).

Momoa said that he got so deep into his character's rage in the episode that he actually broke a gurney he was strapped to. Momoa called the episode the most fun he's ever had as an actor. (Contrary to previous speculation, however, Momoa does not lose his trademark dreadlocks in the episode.)

Even Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite) and Richard Woolsey (Robert Picardo) have close encounters with Wraiths in the coming season, the actors confirmed. Staite said that her character will be trapped with a Wraith in one episode. Picardo cited a moment when Woolsey is about to be killed by a Wraith, as an example of his character's emerging courage.

Not everything is about the Wraith though. Flanigan said it's his understanding that filming for the show's upcoming 100th episode will take place in Las Vegas. Though Flanigan claimed to have no more details than that, he surmised that this would probably mean the episode will have to do with the replicators.

Six episodes of Stargate Atlantis' new season are complete, and filming of new episodes continues. The fifth season kicks off in July. --John Sullivan

SGA - SciFi Wire: Atlantis' Picardo Is Reluctant Chief:

      Atlantis' Picardo Is Reluctant Chief

Robert Picardo, who joins the regular cast of SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis in the coming fifth season, told SCI FI Wire that he initially had doubts about playing the new base commander.

"When I got the phone call, there was a little voice going, 'Wait a minute,'" Picardo said in an interview on the show's set in Vancouver, Canada, last week. "You've set this guy up as kind of an annoyance, a bit of a prig. And now suddenly he's the guy in charge?"

The new guy in charge--taking over from the beloved previous commander, Col. Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping)--is Picardo's Richard Woolsey, the craven bureaucrat well known to fans of Atlantis and its predecessor series, Stargate SG-1.

      **snippage**

A lot of Woolsey's screen time in the new season is devoted to learning that things are different when you're in the big chair. "From the very first episode I'm featured in, Woolsey learns that he cannot simply go by the rulebook," Picardo said. At the end of the first episode, Picardo said, Woolsey tells Sheppard (Joe Flanigan): "I've basically violated five different protocols already in my first crisis."

Grapesofwraith writes: “Also, looking at what we know on the episodes, most seem to be part of the larger arc. Are there any you would consider as stand alone eps?

Answer: There are a number of standalone episodes that contain bigger arc elements (ie. The Seed, Broken Ties, Whispers, Tracker, The Queen) in addition to your one-offs (Daedalus Variations, The Shrine).

Gotta say these recent articles got me really excited for Season 5. They are focusing on characters even more, the Wraith will still be a major part of next season, and there seems to be some great character chemistry with Woolsey.

                    Atlantis' Luttrell Juggles Momhood

Rachel Luttrell, who plays Teyla in SCI FI Channel's original series Stargate Atlantis, told SCI FI Wire that she's a new mother in real life, as is her character in the coming fifth season, and that presents its own challenges.

                    **snippage**

Luttrell said motherhood has changed her, and she's using those changes to inform how she plays Teyla. "It's made her all the more strong and willing to go out there and do whatever she needs to do to make his world safer," she said. At the same time, she added: "You're incredibly vulnerable."

With the Wraith hybrid Michael (returning guest star Connor Trinneer) pursuing Teyla's baby for his genetic gifts, that vulnerability seems likely to be exploited in upcoming episodes. But overall, Luttrell said she's delighted that the writers chose to incorporate her pregnancy into the show. "They did a wonderful job," she said. "I think it made for a stronger, more colorful character. And it's made her all the more powerful and multi-dimensional this year."

2008-2009 Preview - What Shows Are Returning and When?

                      By Mark Wilson, About.com

Here are some brief notes on the status of current sci-fi /fantasy shows on the schedule for the 2008-2009 season. More in-depth coverage of individual shows, and overviews and details on the new shows planned for the Fall, will follow and continue throughout the summer. Several genre shows were renewed but won't reappear until early next year, so for fans of shows like Battlestar Galactica and Reaper it'll be a long wait.

                      RETURNING

                      * Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi): The second half of season 4 (11 episodes) will air in 2009.

                      * Chuck (NBC): Season 2 will air on Mondays at 9 p.m. in the fall before Heroes, with the premiere scheduled for Sept. 29.

                      * Doctor Who (Sci Fi): Season 5 will air in 2010 in the UK, with a new executive producer and lead writer but probably not a new Doctor; there will be several specials meanwhile. The good news is that BBC shows seem to be airing in America as quickly as possible, so the lag time will be less than in the past.

                      * Eli Stone (ABC): Season 2 will air in the fall, Tuesdays at 10 p.m.

                      * Eureka (Sci Fi): Season 3 premieres July 29, 2008.

                      * Ghost Whisperer (CBS): Season 4 will air in the fall.

                      * Heroes (NBC): Season 3 (25 episodes) will air Monday nights at 9 p.m. in the fall, with new villains alongside Sylar (Zachary Quinto).

                      * Knight Rider (NBC): Season 1 will air on Wednesdays at 8 p.m. in the fall, following on the success of the pilot/TV movie. The premiere is Sept. 24.

                      * Kyle XY (ABC Family): Season 3 (10 episodes) will air starting in January 2009.

                      * Medium (NBC): Renewed for midseason 2009, eventually to air Sundays at 9 p.m.

                      * Pushing Daisies (ABC): Season 2 will air in the fall.

                      * Reaper (The CW): Season 2 (13 episodes) will air in spring 2009.

                      * Smallville (The CW): Season 8, likely the last season, will air in the fall.

                      * Stargate Atlantis (Sci Fi): Season 5 premieres July 11, 2008, with a new commander (longtime recurring fussbudget Woolsey, played by Robert Picardo) and a new away-missions team.

                      * Supernatural (The CW): Season 4 will air in the fall.

                      * Sarah Connor Chronicles (Fox): Season 2 will air in the fall, on Mondays at 8 p.m. (opposite Chuck).

                      * Torchwood (BBC America): Season 3 has been confirmed but not yet scheduled.

                      CANCELLED

                      * Bionic Woman (NBC): Canceled in February.

                      * Flash Gordon (Sci Fi): Canceled in April.

                      * Jericho (CBS): Canceled in March.

                      * Journeyman (NBC): Canceled in December.

                      * Moonlight (CBS): Canceled in May.

                      * New Amsterdam (Fox): Canceled in May.

Flash Boredom...wasn't bad enough to be interesting or funny. I can't think of one item from that series to give even a modicum amount of praise. Just a lame, lame attempt at entertainment.
