Who will play her? Which actress would you like to see in this new regular / recurring role?

I think they should have found out a better name. Carter-Keller-Porter sound a little weird after each other. ;)

I think she's an intriguing character. We don't know much about her yet, so it opens up a lot of possibilities.

I do hope she doesn't turn into a female Ford. And yeah, I'm not crazy about the name either. :S The only other TV Allison I know I absolutely can't stand. Hopefully that's not true here. :D

Actresses - I don't know. I guess we'll see. It'd be awesome if they could get someone like Gina Torres, but I think she's probably a little old to play 28.

Honestly, i'd pretty much like her to be a female Sheppard. By that I mean smart, good under pressure, good strategist, good in combat (hand to hand and with a gun) and a good pilot, but with flaws.

What I DON'T want to see is Miss perfect 2.0 or an overly abrasive nuisance like the SG writers tend to create.

What I think?

NOT ANOTHER FRACKING NEW CHARACTER!!!

We barely know some of the ones they've already got!

Seriously...SG1 went five years without a single cast change...this is SGA's EIGHTH!!!

I suspect she'll be in the show in a Major Lorne, Chuck, British guy before he got blown up -type aspect. Just around, but a girl just around. Which, and this might be pushing it but, it might signal the new commander is going to be male if the new permanent extra is female.

Totally. Missed. the. point

*why* do you think SG1 has been that much more successful than any other sci fi show?

Stability - almost everyone loved watching the five core characters on SG1 - A luxury few other fanbases have had with their shows

I have a funny feeling she could be given Teyla's position on the team since Teyla's said she won't want to risk her life since she's got her son to consider now.

And I thought Lorne's team was the secondary team no?

Lt Kemp commanded the team that was evacuating people from the planet in the teaser for BAMSR. You can check the transcript. I remember because it jumped out at me. I remember thinking Atlantis must have a shortage of officers if Lts were leading teams, because that didn't happen at the SGC.

I think what is happening with Atlantis is that they don't have a lot of officers sent out there, certainly not like the number of officers assigned to the SGC. They have to use what they have, and and so pretty much any officer could possibly end up leading a team, from Lieutentant to Captain to Major to Lt Col.

I don't know whether Captain Porter will end up on Sheppard's team or Lorne's team, or end up leading her own. But I don't think we can rule out her being a team leader just because she's a Captain, since we've seen officers with lower ranks lead teams on Atlantis.

Good ole Sergeant Bates used to have a team, granted they were cut off from Earth back then. Also if you go back to like Season 1 or 2 of SG-1 I think there were Captains commanding SG teams. Carter's ex fiance from The First Commandment was a Captain if memory serves. So it would definitely not be out of the realm of possibility for Porter to have her own team.

I would totally love her character if she was a complete new-b , meaning shes just done her military training and shes been dragged off to atlantis . she could bring in the aspect of

1) having a mum and dad and family that she constantally goes to see
2) she could be "molded" and "taught" by colonel sheppard ...
3) we really need people who aren't pro at what they do , i mean we have the supers
rodney super scientist
shepard super kirk / special forces
teyla super pain in the bum / super mum / super leader etc etc
ronan / super .
ford was a weapons specialist but we rarly saw him in his element ..

she should be just " usmc"

Jeff O'Connor
February 3rd, 2008, 05:05 AM
Well, outside of being a weapons specialist, I really felt that Ford was there because he was being exemplified as the resident 'newb'. A big reason I disagree with his early departure from the series was that I don't think he had been given a fraction of the time it should have taken to evolve into something more; making him what he became basically skipped ahead in his projected character development ridiculously. He was the known -- he faced the unknown. He was young, brash and headstrong.

I'm all for that too. But since she's coming, I'm just hoping for the best of it. Writers are usually okay with creating a new character, although there are enough in it already that I'd like to see more and know more about, but that's apparently not what the writers are fully going for.

I'm not sure if the name Alison Porter actually reveals anything about the character, but I'd really love to see an Asian, Hispanic, Middle Eastern, or any other ethnically diverse character added to the team, (if they really need a new face). And I know Rachel and Jason fit this def, but on the show they are "aliens". I'd like to see some Earth variety too.

Her original name was supposed to be Joanne Taylor, but the producers were afraid that "Taylor" and "Teyla" sounded too much alike and would cause some confusion if the names came up in rapid conversation:

Regarding Search and Rescue - we’ve changed Taylor’s name to avoid having it confused with “Teyla” in rapidfire conversation. First name Alison. Last name Porter. We’ll see if that sticks.

Whatever happened to that cute Japanese girl who walked into the control room with Daniel during the predeparture scene in Rising? That way they would have only the expedition members to work with.

Why couldn't the just have brought back Cadman, we already like her.

That's the very same thing I thought when I first heard of this new character!

I'll wait to see what kind of character this Captain Porter is, but something tells me that she's going to be a Vala-toned-down kind of character, to take Teyla's place in some missions... and I'm not very sure how I feel about it, but 'happy' is not the word :ronananime25:

Anyway, I must repeat that maybe, instead of a new character (with so many changes, a lot of people won't admit a newbie so well, specially if he/she has a important role, in this case, something like that character appearing on screen/having more episodes than Lorne, for example), it would be better reintroducing a SGA well-liked character, and with so much potential as Cadman.

Anyway, as for the moment we really don't know anything... let's just wait for what's to come :beckett:

My opinion on this topic won't be popular... please forgive me!!

I actually like the abundance of, and ever-increasing amount of, characters in SGA. To me, that helps set it apart from SG-1. SG-1 was about the "team dynamic", which I loved. SGA seems to be going in a different direction. While I agree that character development has seen some sacrifices, I like how the Atlantis community in and of itself is practically a character at this point.

To me, SGA "reads" much like a Stephen King novel. I don't mean to say SG-1 is like horror, what I mean is that King has a massive amount of main characters to the point that you are familiar with the whole community by the time the novel is done. It's almost epic in scope. SGA comes across to me in the same way at this point... less about the team, more about the community as a whole, maybe in a sort of Battlestar Galactica sense.

Do they do it successfully? Yes in some respects, no in others, but it remains to be seen if adding more will ruin the "community" dynamic.

Bless you. But in actuality Middle Eastern is a misnomer and is not a proper geographical nor anthropological term. "Middle Easterns" are West Asians, while those you classed as "Asian", if I'm following you are, East Asians. This doesn't include those of the Sub continent of Asia and/or South Pacific islands which bluntly fall within East and West Asian, respectively. In general they both fall under the universal terminology of Asian.

They do need to find someone soon though. The actress needs enough time to "get into character" in order to be convincing.

I hope not. I'd like to see a woman that's no nonsense, independent, and competent but not arrogant or rude either. The closest thing that comes to my mind is a female version of Lorne, I guess. ;)

I'd rather just see Lorne. ;)

Allison is very front and center in "Search and Rescue" so they better fill the position pretty soon.

I like Lorne, but with a man taking charge of Atlantis I'd prefer to see a new female character for some balance. We've had the triad of Weir/Teyla/Kate for 3 seasons, then in s4 it was Carter/Teyla/Keller/Weir and without Porter in s5 it would have been just Teyla/Keller. I always like to see more female characters on SF (though I have my qualms with how TPTB have handled such characters :P).

You know, this is the one piece of the Season 5 puzzle that I'm not sure about. I liked the point someone raised earlier, about why they couldn't just use Cadman. I checked the actress's website, and it seems that she's a singer. Maybe she's busy?

Either way, there is still a chance that this can change. Kavan Smith auditioned for a new character, but TPTB changed their minds and just moved Lorne from SG1 to SGA. The scientist job on Atlantis was originally someone else, but at the last moment, they replaced her with McKay.

Why do I fear that Porter will be an IOA spy? Maybe she will be the new Kavannaugh or a Starbuck type character in Atlantis. :)

Mrs.B108 writes: “Will Season Five introduce new enemies alongside its new Atlantis personnel?”

Answer: Yep.

Woolsey will make some trouble, but I am sure the writers will try to like him with us, so Richard will choose the good side against IOA. ;)

Well, I would think they would want to shoot Carter's episodes first, since filming starts for Sanctuary in March. And since Carter is in the premiere...
I suppose AT could film some of her scenes ,then the producers could edit them in .That's quite normal ,as they had plenty practice over the years with RDA's reduced schedules, after all.:)

According to spoilers, Porter is in the premiere. And so is Carter, so I would think it would be one of the first to be filmed.
Yep.I agree.Best they pick their Porter asap.

You are not alone. :(

What can Porter do that Lorne can't do better?

It seems to me that SGA is floundering, and the all-purpose solution TPTB has found is to bring in a "new, shiny character that we know you are going to love!"

But I am worn out with new characters. So, for me, ---- not shiny.

We’ve pulled the trigger on Porter - who may well be in for yet another name change - casting an actress who had a blink-and-you’ll-miss-her part back in season 3’s Tao of Rodney but did a bang-up job and caught our attention. “We should bring that actress back,”I suggested at the time. And now we have.

I realy hope the character is sorta 'Cadmanesque', that she's outspoken and not afraid to say how she feels unlike most of the other characters. I don't want her to be the female version of Lorne, whats the point in that? Might as well just have Lorne!

When I read JM's post Esposito was the first character to come to mind, so unless the actress was just an extra or something then I think it might be her. Which I'm OK with :)

I remember her scenes, but there wasn't enough for me to form an opinion of her as an actress. What does concern me though is that her scenes were of the she's/he's hot variety. First, Rodney and Radek thought she was hot and then she thought Ronon was hot. I really hope this actress wasn't chosen because TPTB wants to continue in that vein. If so, then I feel for the actress because it will not be done well.

Well, it's true that her scenes were pretty small, but I do remember her making an impression on me, and it wasn't a good one. Maybe she'd do better in a larger part - I don't know.

Well there's also Dr. Coleman (according to imdb) in T. of Rodney. Dr. Lee posted a pic. of her on the previous page.
Her scenes fell more along the lines of the blink and you’ll miss her kind.
I like her. From the one scene I saw her in she seems as if she can give off that believable tough/take no bull sort of military posture…at least more so than the other actress.

Also there’s that name change in store for the character. Being Coleman’s the other possible option for the character, and the actress is Asian it could likely be happening to better suit her.

There will never be a love triangle between regular or recuring characters in any form of stargate as it is far too much like a Soap Opera.

But....I find myself wishing now that the character had been created as an older character - say...35. Keller's enough (indeed more than enough) to represent the younger side of the expedition. I personally don't need another young gorgeous chick on the show. A mature military woman - that would be a different story.

To be honest, and only IMo,I think McKay respected and cared for Elizabeth Weir far more deeply than he ever felt for meek little Katie.

His "thing" for Carter seems to have fizzled out ,so if that doesn't rear up again in the rest of S4,he's probably ripe for a "Ship" with this new Captain.

I'm not sure really how I feel about that .:( I don't want to be blammed by ship .I prefer characters to be "friendshipped" and the rest left to the viewer ,if you know what I mean ?

Honestly, I just pulled 35 out of my head. I just didn't want the actress to look like a kid. 28 would be ok for a character age, if they'd hired an older-looking actress. Amanda Tapping was 32 when she started on SG-1 (as a Captain), and could easily have passed for 28 IMO. Jill Wagner is 29, and she definitely looks older than Leela. Rachel I think is in her mid to late 30s, but she definitely doesn't look that old.

In other words, hire an older actress. In my humble opinion. :D

We can all assume that it is not going to be action pack because Woolsey is going to question every move made by everyone around him. Why can't they just bring back Weir? They brought Daniel back from the dead/ascension for Christ's sake. Atlantis IMO is a failure. They can't stick to a character and develop them until they left the series and brought them back for a few episodes and then they will never appear again i.e. Ford, Carson and Weir. Even with how I feel I am still going to be watching the show though just because it is the only Stargate show on right now. :mckay:

Didn't stop Jack/Sam. :S

Yes but that never really happened did it. Also i think they are bringing in Porter to be someones love interest and it would be really weird for them to bring her in and only allude to a potential relationship between her and Sheppard. I still think McKay is the logical choice.

wow I thought AT was in her mid 20s in s1. oops :S anyway I don't really care about the age, I'm just saying an older character needs a higher rank imo. TBTB could've easily cast a person in their mid 30s to play this character. however it's always good to have several hot girls on the show :P

I just think that a Army captain would be someone that McKay would really go for.
Oh ,I agree she might fit his type .:)

Also i just remembered that she cant be paired off with Sheppard due to military regulations.
V true,as she'll be under his chain of command, so Shep,Lorne and any officer outranking her are off-limits ,as long as the regs are obeyed.
She can't have a relationship with anyone of lesser rank to her either.
(If I understood the regs correctly ,the last time I read them.Been a while !)

I don't think that's the plan. TBTB already tried something with Ronon/Keller and may even continue it. there are a lot of changes for s5 but I doubt a new love interest for Shep was the reason to bring in Porter

Maybe.

But my first impression of Porter was 'That could be Weir, 15 years ago.' Plus, Weir was in a few eps this season, and it sounds like Porter will be in a few eps. So, I took her as replacing Weir, not Carter.

I see the Doctor replacing Carter (can't remember the name at the moment). Which is similar. Replacing an older blonde with a younger blonde.

The women are no where near 'old' either!

But, the women seem to need replacing by others who are 10-15 years younger.

Though, at the risk of starting an argument (and, please, I mean this in the best possible way and really, really don't want to argue), I'd say Sheppard is getting rather long in the tooth, by today's 'hottie' standards. It seems the term 'hottie' expires after age about 24.

There seems to be an effort to keep the same female/male ratio, but in these last 2 changes (maybe more?) one female has left (for whatever reason) and they've been replaced by a female who is much younger. Why aren't any of the women replaced by somebody in their mid-late 30s, or heaven forbid, 40s.

I'm not even going to venture into any older-aged women characters making an appearance. I know that would TOTALLY destroy the show ;)

Now, I'm sure the actress playing Porter is a very nice woman. She probably deserves a chance at the role. And, I hope the character brings a lot to the show.

But, my goodness, could the producers be any more transparent in what they are doing?

It seems besides there being a new female, paticularly one who looked good enough to make zombie sex hot...shipping is the most important topic about her status.

It's unfortunate her significance is maintained through who she's paired up with...although I'm sure she'll prove herself otherwise.

Anyway it's cool it might a Latina...something I haven't seen much of on the show and she's a Captain. Is there any proof that she'll be on Shep's team, because everyone seems to be making that claim.

Is she even considered a regular?!

In any event if she is to be paired most likely it will be Rodney. It didn't work with that irritating "snow white", it might work with her. Although she would be the complete OPPOSITE of the type of woman he goes for...that is if she's a brunette on top of being military (no mention of scientific background) and could probably beat him in arm wrestling.

Tell me about it. I've been wanting Pam Grier on one of these shows for ever. I wanted her on X-Files as an AD or at least Doggett's partner. I wanted her on this show as leader of Atlantis. She played a cool DEA agent (I believe it was DEA) in L&O: SVU.

Or they could go a sort of the sci-fi queen line with Gina Torres, she's a Black Cuban---something rarely seen unless you're a maid in Novellas. :S

But you know racialized characters is a fine line on this board.

This is what ran through my mind. Admittedly I would have to say this would be a better match than KB and McKay.

McKay was like butter on KB's melba toast. Nothing helps melba toast. :( :S

I also must say to some of the anti-ship people. Let's be realistic, do you think these characters would not get into some sort of relationship (be it monogomous or one night)? I find that utterly ridiculous. If this was reality they'd be macking all over the place. These people seem a bit more reserved than I expected to tell you the truth.

I'm not expecting this ship to last or any for that matter, but I'm not adverse to seeing some sort of romance because that definitely would happen and it adds a flair of realism at times. If I can't relate to anything, I can relate to romance (forbidden or allowed) in the workplace.

On a hopeful standpoint, I definitely have high dreams of her standing for something more than an easy ship-buddy.

Lt Sara
February 11th, 2008, 10:46 AM
I agree . I think to add more realism within the show , the show must develop relationship wisely. I am not suggesting that the writers should screen more of the teams intimate moments on screen. What i would hope if is this new female character would somehow have a personality of her own........NOT A FEMALE version of Sheppard. I hope also that Mckay will be able to develop withing the romance realms. He seems very reserved and should have a close female compainion as oppossed to a male compainion Dr Zelenka. Teyla has Ronon and vice versa. John has Teyla and Ronon. Yet Mckay only really had Katie who was at his quriky level .

McKay needs a strong female companion.

I think I'm going to really like this new character and at the moment all I know is her name and who she'll be played by... :)

Would they be hyping her so much if she weren't a hot woman?

I'm sorry she isn't Russian. I was also hoping to finally see a Russian featured prominently. I'm surprised they haven't gotten someone in yet.

Well, I completed all of two pages on Whispers today, finally hitting that all-important 10 page mark but, more importantly, establishing the other team: Captain Alicia Vega, Lieutenant Anne Teldy, Sergeant Dusty Wells, and Dr. Alison (with one L) Porter. Carson will be in for a treat - when he’s not fighting for his life. Come tomorrow, I’ll probably rewrite the whole thing anyway but, hey, it’s a start. A slow, laborious start.

And a paragraph to go with that pic:

Captain Alicia Vega, a.k.a. Leela Savasta, was in for her costume fitting this morning and swung by the production offices. She’s a very sweet young lady who was genuinely surprised to learn she’d already become the talk of many a fan forum - without even having shot a scene yet.

I doubt a Captain would be given command of a SG team

No she wouldn't. Generally a Commander of a team in the military is at least a Lt.Col.

exactly

Exactly. The chance that Alison is the new commander is les than 1%. She is only a Captain.

I didn't read all of the posts, I only got to page 2, so maybe somebody cleared this up for you all. But if Stargate were RL then most of these teams would be commanded by Sgt and would probably not be sending out Air Force personnel but that's a different matter.

In reality a four man team is what is called a "fire-team" and they are usually commanded by anything from a Lance Corporal to a Sgt.

Captains typically command entire companies which equates to about 100 to 200 men and women. Lieutenant Colonels & Colonels command thousands of men and women.

So to say that a Captain is too inexperienced to command a four man team is utterly ridiculous. They do it all the time...

I'd say due to the nature of the stargate project, the SGC would be 'top heavy' meaning a higher proportion of higher ranking officers than a normal command. reason being, that the missions they undertake need the discretion of a senior officer and not a lowly E7 or whatever. special forces operations are similar, you'd have a captain in charge of a 10 man team where a captain in a regular infantry unit would probably be in charge of a company (couple of hundred troops).

Well, the only other firefly female cast member is Summer Glau, but she is all terminator right now.

I am thinking Laura Bertram from andromeda. (Lisa Ryder is probably similar age to Gina Torres)

On the rank issue, any idea what's the rank of graduates from air force academy? Because west point graduates starts their military career far higher on the ladder compare to regular recruits.

I suppose in order to command those personnel, you have to have a pretty high rank.

Also, this is the air force, not the army. A army colonel will command a regiment (1000 to 5000 people), but an air force colonel will command far less troops. (An US air force colonel will command a wing, which is around 100 aircrafts with their pilots.)

nx01a

Science fiction is nothing without drama, IMO. Would we give a damn about what the Cylons are really after or the threat of human extinction without seeing the human sides of Apollo or Starbuck? Or the insane relationship between Six and Baltar? Drama's good, it grounds these spectacular cosmic events and gives us a reason for caring about what happens in a situation. I wouldn't give a damn about whether the Replicators assimilate the Milky Way if it weren't populated by people we've seen before.

Drama shouldn't be the driving force [except in those wonderful filler character episodes] but, without it, we're just watching explosions in space. Which are cool, but still... There's nothing wrong with a big cast as long as everyone is distinct and their 'problems' matter somehow.

Looking at the bookcase in the background, there's a few comic character statues. I wonder if they're used for inspiration? There's a statue of Emma Frost, the skanky White Queen. Bless her almost naked soul.
Also one of Superman villain, Gog. There's an idea for a villain: time travelling villain [Rodney?:P] who kills Shep then goes back to the day before and kills him again, and goes back to the day before that and kills him again and... etc.
Nah, let's stick to almost naked chicks.

On the shelf across the room: Ultron-5, Catwoman, Gog, and the White Queen. Here's the deal. We had a thread for "Captain Alison Porter," which was already a few pages long when the name change was announced. Leela had even been cast already. But since most people still knew the new Captain as "Alison Porter," I left the "f.k.a." (formerly known as) in the thread title to avoid confusion.

Just starting a new "Alicia Vega" thread and leaving this one for the new "Dr. Alison Porter" would be no good, since it would be starting with pages of posts about a different character.

Anyone can feel free to start a new thread for "Dr. Alison Porter," yet uncast. I'll take the "f.k.a." out of this title now.
