    4400 and Dead Zone cancelled

    From CinemaBlend:

USA Ditches Dead Zone, The 4400

    By Kona Gallagher
    2007-12-19

There are two USA series that probably won't be showing up on NBC's patented writers strike freakout schedule anytime soon: both The Dead Zone and The 4400 have been canceled. While neither show was a real ratings bonanza, the cancellations nevertheless came as a shock. Such a shock in fact; that what turned out to be the series finales of both shows aired back in September.

At a time in which scripted programs are few and far between and new reality shows like NBC's Clash of the Choirs are tanking in the ratings, it seems counterintuitive to get rid of anything that a network already has - especially when it's a show that has as low of a budget as these two very clearly (and painfully) do. However, with no episodes of either series in the can, there's not a lot they could do to help USA, or its sister channel NBC's strike-ravaged schedule.

USA Executive VP of Original Programming, Jeff Wachtel, says of his network's decision, "We wish we could keep all our great shows alive forever. But we feel we need to give some of our new shows a platform to grow, and it's with great sadness that we say goodbye to two shows that had a great run and helped create the resurgence of original programming on our network and on all of cable."

Fan petitions are already being circulated to save The 4400, but I wouldn't count on a Jericho-like fan resurrection. Although The Dead Zone brought a buff Anthony Michael Hall back into the spotlight, the argument can be made that the whole "coma-patient seeing into the future" story has been taken as far as it can go. So is USA acting rash in shooting its birds in hand, or have these shows simply run their course?
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.

I totally loved the 4400. I'm shocked that they cancelled it.

I've never watched Dead Zone, so I can't really comment about that.

Both shows deserve a TV-movie or something to truly wrap up their storylines.

The Dead Zone probably anticipated the cancellation a bit more than the 4400 but they never quite pay off the armagaddon storyline which they scrapped at the beginning of the last season but only to bring that back at the finale.

I won't really miss the Dead Zone much but I'm really disappointed about the 4400 which really needs at least a 2hr wrap-up. Is it really too much to ask to get an ending these days? I swear every series I start watch leaves me hanging and I'm really getting pissed about it.

            Ah.

The 4400 was great. It's not going to have a conclusion then.

            ... Maybe a Heroes crossover

                  Agreed on both counts.

I personally loved The Dead Zone, it was an interesting show, not as good as the other shows I watched (it was slightly better than the new Bionic Woman, in my opinion).

I really enjoyed both shows, it's such a pity they have both been axed. Looks like there will be even less to watch on the TV for me as quite a few series i like have been axed over the last year.

Just got online and got an email from a trade magazine about it. It sooo sucks.

Oh well, one less channel to watch...

OMG, did they really cancel the 4400? Wow, that show was really getting into it stride. These guys are nuts for cancelling a good show like this!

Dead Zone was good and will be missed, though I think it was getting tougher to get really good stories.

The studio already issued an order that all sets, wardrobe, and props are to be sold off. Doubtful that "The 4400" will return in series form. It's average in the 25-54 demographic was about half of what "The Starter Wife", "Burn Notice", "WWE Raw", "Monk", and "Psych" was averaging on USA Network. Dead Zone was slightly worst than The 4400. There were strong rumors last year that this season would be the last for both shows and for the most part, many plots were tied up and the obligatory new ones introduced that may never be explored or answered.
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice.
