BERLIN -- Tele Munchen topper Herbert Kloiber is slapping his own broadcaster with a e10 million ($12.4 million) lawsuit for breach of contract.
Kloiber has accused local web RTL II and its managing director Josef Andorfer of deliberately violating existing programming contracts with Tele Munchen.
Speaking to German daily Sueddeutsche Zeitung, Kloiber alleged the broadcaster aired more than 50 feature films acquired from Tele Munchen, including "Rocky V" and "Twelve Monkeys," in far more disadvantageous timeslots than originally agreed to, resulting in less advertising revenue and considerable loss for Tele Munchen.
Andorfer, who has often clashed with RTL II's other main shareholder, RTL Group, has made no secret of his desire to make the channel much less dependent on Kloiber, who has in the past provided up to 60% of the web's programming. The RTL II topper has relied increasingly on low-cost, inhouse-produced reality formats such as "Big Brother," home renovation skein "Mission Traumhaus" (Mission Dreamhouse) and "Wife Swap" clone "Frauentausch" (produced by Tele Munchen subsid Prisma) instead of Tele Munchen's licensed fictional programming.
The channel recently irked local sci-fi fans by pulling popular series "Stargate" and "Andromeda" off the air to make room for its reality formats. RTL II officials have promised the series will return next year. "Stargate: Atlantis" is expected to premiere on the channel next year.
