The guy who directed Stargate the movie (Dion Devlin) also directed ID4, and when ID4 came out some people thought that it was supposed to be the sequel to Stargate. Dion Devlin said himself that this was not the case.
There might be more to the story but thats all that i know...

Yeah, apparently the original stargate movie was meant to be part of a trilogy. When MGM decided not to produce the other two Devlin went on to ID4. I don't know whether it is just a rumor but apparently the story was based on Devlin's idea for the second stargate feature.

oh rite cheers guys for the info but i still don't see the connection another than its the same director i mean the aliens in ID4 don't use a stargate to get to earth and the aliens ain't gou'ld (soz if gou'ld is misspelled) and as well a trilogy to me is a continuation of the story from the original flim and the story in ID4 is no where near the stargate story so how did the rumour come about that they are connected?

You wouldn't have to change much at all to make it a Stargate sequel. Apparently the plot for Independence Day was basically the one that would have been used for 'Stargate 2', the gate had been buried and another 'god' showed up in ships to wipe us out, but MGM didn't go for a second movie so they changed the plot and turned it into Independence Day...

u've got to remember that the series was not how the original creators intended it to be.
which is y alot of things were changed between the movie and the series.
the trilogy would bebe completly different to how the series played out which is y ID4 is nothing like the stargate you know.
of course, parts of it were changed to make it a seperate film not based on stargate.
of course, its pretty much all speculation

I can definitely see how certain aspects of ID4 could have been the second Stargate movie. Whether that connection is true or not, who knows?

sorry but i just don't see those changes you speak of i mean this hole thing for me anyway is like connecting the terminator trilogy with the back to the future the only thing connecting those two Trilogys is the fact that they've got time travel in them heres another one it's like connecting E.T with Taken the only connection there is one)they've got aliens in them and two) its the same director does anyone see what i mean?

The directors vision for his sequel would have been another god attacking Earth in ships, his idea wasn't accepted by MGM, next thing you know he makes Independence Day. I'm not saying it's the truth, but it's a widely held opinion that he changed his Stargate 2 script and turned it into Independence Day, the changes would of only had to have been minimal. It just seems more likely to me that he changed his original idea rather than imagining a whole new 'aliens attack Earth' script.

yeah ok you got a point there if mgm didn't go for stargate 2 instead of taking the time out to write another story why not just edit the story you've already got

it came about because its fairly common knowledge that the writer of the stargate movie was planning it as a trilogy, but only had chance to make one of them.
ID4 was not only the same director, but the same writer, and the story was very simlar to one of the stargate movies that didn't get made, althou i thought it was the 3rd not the 2nd.
althou it was never comfirmed, ppl put 2 and 2 together and assumed ID4 was the writers way to get part of his story out but as another film
