Stargate Atlantis: Season 3

Wormholes and Wraiths and Ancients… OH MY!!

By Jack T. Ripper | 09/16/2007 |

**major snippage**

...my wife and I were relieved when the 3rd season DVD set showed up last week is an understatement. This season was every bit as good as everything that had come before, which gives me hope that the show will have a long run. I really don't want to get to much into the story arc of the 3rd season, but I will say that there is a very sad and shocking demise of a major character.

The episodes are all presented in glorious widescreen, and the use of the Dolby Digital makes for a great viewing experience. Much like the DVD releases of Stargate SG-1, this new set has a ton of extra features scattered throughout the discs. Normally there are commentaries on all of the episodes, but this time they skipped one ("The Real World") for some reason. All of the rest of the episodes have commentaries by various members of crew, however. The last time we got to hear from the actors, but not this time…. strange.

Along with these incredible commentaries, there are several featurettes on specific episodes, all of which are well worth a watch. You'll also find featurettes on the visual effects department, the aliens, a look back on season 3 and O'Neill's (Richard Dean Anderson) visit to Atlantis. There's also a profile on actress Rachel Lutrell, who plays Tayla. These Stargate sets are amongst the best produced for any series I've seen as far as extra features.

Stargate Atlantis Season 3 DVD review

posted by Doc on Sunday September 16, @09:39AM

from the Replicators-Wraiths-and-Genii-oh-my dept.

Stargate Atlantis Season 3 comes out on Tuesday, September 18th. Read
More for a review of the DVD set, and get prepared for Season 4, which starts September 28th on the SCI FI Channel.

[Note: I am forgoing providing scores for this while I re-evaluate

**general snippage**

Overall, this was a great season for Atlantis. Perhaps its biggest shortcoming is in juggling two major story arcs dealing with separate enemies - the Ancient Replicators and the Wraith, and I'm not sure that was really that bad.

I'd list some notable episodes, but most all the season was notable. I seriously can't pick out favorites. For standalone episodes, I'd note "Sateda", where we learn more about Ronin, and "The Game", where a game similar to Sid Meier's Civilization series turns out to have real world consequences. And then there is "Sunday", which starts off at a look of the characters' "day off", which goes horribly wrong, especially for- well, I really don't want to spoil it.

Season 3 is the best season yet for Atlantis, and with its older sibling done (except for the upcoming DVD releases), it needs to maintain this quality as it takes up the Stargate banner. We'll find out soon.

In the reviewer's listing of the episodes, he correctly lists 'The Ark' before 'Sunday', but the DVD specs that were announced a while back had the order mixed up... Do I dare hope that MGM fixed this in time for release?

It says Torri Higginson doesn't do audio commentaries, but she did do one for The Long Goodbye, though I thought that was the only one she did.
good review nontheless:)

So there really is no actor comms this season? Dam. Oh well I will have to settle for what Marty G has to say.

And yeah Torri did commentaries on both season one and two, might want to re-word that David in the review, it certainly reads like Torri never does comms to me, which just ain't true.

I have seen screen caps of the Joe Flanigan 'back-side' :p moment... so that is what these actors get paid for? LOL! :D *two thumbs up*

There is a Ark of Truth trailer when you load disc 1. It's the same one from SG-1 season 10.

Did anyone else open up their set, look at the slimpacks, and wonder if they were designed to go with the original cover art? Between looking at the cast picture on the spines, and the very dark blues, they look like they were designed to match the original artwork since the cover we got is so much ligher in colouring, I thought. Or maybe I'm just crazy. :P

I know it's a small thing, but I still can't understand why they went with the fugly cover.:( My daughter was cracking up looking at Ronan on that cover(and his pic on the slimpack.) They could have done so much better.

The menus etc all look great though.:) Hey, I'm just happy to finally watch the episodes for the first time.

Same! I really like that they've stuck with the same menu layout- though I'm not sure why they chose green this time.....it clashes with the set (:jack_new_anime06:). Should have gone with light purple!

I really missed the cast commentaries on these - please can we have them back for next year? They're FUN as well as giving some insight into how scenes were staged/rehearsed, and telling us what went wrong, or went on behind the scenes.

And please - please! - NEVER inflict another tech-head commentary like 'Progeny's on me again, without offering an alternative. 40 minutes of "Ooh, I was so pleased with the way this effect worked, that you can just about glimpse behind Weir's left shoulder" - "Yeah, my team worked late into the night getting the pixels tweaked on that one." "Well it looks really cool."
We never got to hear anything about how David Stiers and John O'Callaghan - how they came to be cast, whether or not they'd seen the show (though I do happen to know from a magazine interview that DOS always watches Sci-Fi Friday whenever possible). I think there were a couple of token "Oh yeah, that's DOS/JO'C, he was great," lines, but that was about it.

This episode definitely gets my vote for the most tedious DVD commentary ever.

I'd also like to add my vote to the clamour for Missing Scenes and Outtakes next time too!
