    Wormhole Travel Time

How come sometimes someone can be heard to counting down an objects arrival when other times objects seem to be transported instantly? (In a few episodes, it is clearly stated that the average time is almost instant, but in some epidodes, like the pilot, someone will say something like "Object will reach its destination in 5...4..3...2...1")

    Differing distances.
Travel to a Gate that is close galactically speaking will be almost instant. However, if you`re going to the other side of the galaxy or to another galaxy, it takes longer.

That's my take on it anyway.

There really is no concrete way to "make time go by" when you're travelling through the wormhole. Obviously, by canon, the travel time is nearly instantaneous. However, that's not to say that it takes several seconds for you to travel from one end of the wormhole to the other. In the original Stargate movie, the wormhole sequence lasts about 15-30 seconds. When in reality, you reach the "other side" nearly instantly. To get a sense that some time has passed, they add small sequences where they count down the arrival time of objects through the wormholes. But nothing is more than 5 seconds in general.
