    LOL! Ain't it the truth!

That's why, when we get it, we sit up and pay attention ... sometimes it makes us smile, and other times it makes us wince! Growing pains - for the writers and the viewers!

BTW, have I won some kind of lottery by posting the 1,000th reply on this thread?!

They seem determined to prove they don't need any financial advice - after all they are Engineers - I mustn't be that intelligent - or I'd be an Engineer too - right - so this financial lark can't be that specialised - and to be told how or what to do by a woman - women should be in the kitchen - not telling them how to do their job!?!
I've been there 3 years and only made slow progress. For the most part I find it amusing - though it does wear you down a little! I never want to be one of the engineer guys though - that ego thing is such a heavy load to bear!! LOL. It has to be said they do tend to treat each other in the same way too!!
It sounds like some of us could start up another thread on the fun part of dealing with engineers. I teach a lot of engineering students and work with engineering professors, so putting it into Stargate terms, I get to deal with both the larvae and the mature symbiotes. (not that I'm calling anyone a Goa'uld, mind you)

I think that's why Sam Carter resonates for many of us. We can see ourselves in her wins and losses. So, while we're rooting for an imaginary hero onscreen, we're also rooting for ourselves.
<applause> Well said, CG! I have to admit that a large part of the appeal of Sam's character is her depiction of the everywoman and of the obstacles we meet (and, sometimes, fail to meet)and negotiate around every day.

About the gal who sailed solo around the world - and in a teensy tri-maran at that! One thing I appreciated about the particular newscast I saw (CBC) was that no mention whatsoever was made of her gender. I also loved the celebratory shots of her "ground?" support crew. Congrats to all of them!

A Cherokee elder sitting with his grandchildren told them,
"In every life there is a terrible fight – a fight between two wolves.
One is evil: he is fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity,
resentment, and deceit. The other is good: joy, serenity, humility,
confidence, generosity, truth, gentleness, and compassion."
A child asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"
The elder looked the child in the eye. "The one you feed."

Consider it payback for MEGO. Great acronym! I think I'll have it stamped on my hand before going to class. My students will thank you.

JACK: Yeah, Carter. What's your situation?

SAM: We're at the gate Sir, but it's heavily guarded. (Over radio) We
can attempt to get thru, but it's gonna get ugly.

              gotta go!

I just got my copy of Stargate SG1 - the Official Magazine in the mail, and thought I’d share a few things that people on this thread might be interested in. I’ve just barely scanned the mag, but first, here’s a question and answer from an interview with Robert C. Cooper

Question: Do you know how you will write around Amanda Tapping’s maternity leave?
Answer: Yes, we have some idea, but I don’t want to say too much. When we begin season nine Carter has already accepted a special position that takes her away from the SGC for both personal and professional reasons. She will still be involved in the goings on but on a more limited basis until certain events bring her back to the team.

There’s a short article about Amanda’s reaction to a playing a particular scene in Reckoning (the article says Reckoning, but I think they must have meant Threads)
                    Spoiler:
She talks about how hard it was to film Sam's reaction to Jacob’s death.

There’s a long article about a set visit to both SGA and SG1 while Moebius and The Siege were filming, with pictures, including some snaps of script pages. (No, I haven’t had time to read them yet.) It includes a cute story about having alternate Sam eat blue jello. Knew our gang would like that one. Just some nice behind the scenes stuff.

Sam and Weir are the two sides of the centerfold, and there are interviews/articles with Torri Higginson and Teryl Rothery, so the women of SG are represented well this time.

Thanks for the info NC (I don't get that mag, so your quotes are great).

So.... it sounds like they aren't planning a 'big story' for Carter's absence; that is, nothing like she's offworld leading a mission, or she's captured and needs to be rescued. Instead, she's going to be 'working somewhere else' for awhile... sigh... well, at least it's not just lecturing at the Academy for a month! I was really hoping for something 'big'... sci-fi 'big'... like Replicarter comes back and grabs her for some reason... or she, O'Neill and Thor are off hunting Replicarter...

Just earlier today, I was emailing Chopingal regarding my thoughts and speculations as to where they were going to take the character of Carter in Season 9 (I haven't seen Threads, but I have read a transcript of it).

Many of us on this thread have stated that we are looking forward to seeing Sam in command, hopefully offworld, but we're looking forward to seeing her represent a positive portrayal of a female officer in charge (hand signals and all) - especially as she didn't get much of that in Season 8.

According to that Gateworld post that said that Beau Bridges would be taking over as CO of the SGC, Jack is going to be promoted and take Hammond's position as head of Homeworld Security, which they said is 'in charge of all things Stargate and offworld relations-type stuff'.

After reading what happens in Threads, I'm beginning to wonder (strongly) if TPTB are planning to have Carter resign from the military and take a 'special' civilian post. That would remove the 'regs problem' and it would make the question of 'who's in charge' with LCol. Cameron Mitchell a non-issue as *he* would be.

I don't like this path because I *really* liked seeing a woman positively portrayed in the military. Having Sam leave the military removes that type of command possibility from her role... as well as makes it more difficult to see her flying an X302 on occassion - and those were facets of her character that I really loved.

I've tried hard to stay away from too much ship speculation here... as well as to leave out most direct references to events in Season 8 episodes... but what do the rest of you think? Do you like the idea of Dr. Carter instead of Colonel Carter?

As a last note, I did like RC's last words 'bring her back to the team'.

HAHAHAHAH, Blue Jello FOREVEEEEER *runs faster to get mag* (it's funny because I always go on about jello in real life, blue, red, and purple (Sam, Jack, and shippyness) but I actually don't even like jello...

YES, power to the SG women, Torri, Teryl, Amanda and Rachel are four of my fave ladies ever! They're characters and their real selves are all just sooo amazing and funny and caring and everything!

Ooh, just on a really happy note, this young girl I know just won Vancouver Idol (you know ,the singing shows...) so she now has a guaranteed spot on Canadian Idol!!! The competition is for people between 16 and 25, and she's only just turned 16, but she still won the Vancouver part! I'm so excited for her!!!!!

Something I had to mention from threads

                        Spoiler:
I just watched Jacob's death scene again *sob* And I just had to comment on the brilliant way they expressed Sam's feelings. How she came to terms with his death and was thankful for the extra time they had together. When he actually died, she didn't start bursting out in sobs, bawling her eyes out like in many painful fics i've read, but the way both before and after her eyes were just watery, and the way she spoke, you could tell she felt horrible inside, but she was being strong. How when he actually died, she simply held his hand, and closed her eyes... it was beautiful, that's really the only word I can think of rite now to describe it.

                        SPOILERS SEASON 8 THREADS
I've been a die-hard shipper since the very beginning, but I really strongly do not want Sam to resign to "get rid of the regs" or some stupid thing. Firstly, the regulations, if you read and analyze what they actually say, don't really forbid any relationship between Sam and Jack. There are loopholes that they could get through, especially if Jack wasn't commander of the SGC, thus not her direct direct commander... And like Kerry said in Threads, Jack could retire but stay on as a civilian whatever, while still being in command of a bunch of stuff.

To make SAM retire?!!? That's just ridiculous. I do not believe that she herself would let herself retire, and even if she did, I don't think Jack would let her. She still has so many more years to advance her career, and really get some leadership going. I don't think Sam would ever want to retire just to get with Jack. Yes, she's been through a hell of a lot lately, but still, the thing we love about her is her strength. And if it really comes down to it, they've waited 8 full years, she wouldnt' just drop all her restraint and professionalism she's worked on in that time, or her very career, all of a sudden. She's always been so strongly portrayed in the past 8 years that if she were to retire now, right as she gets her command, just to be with Jack, and to let in some random happens-to-be-very-important and brilliant new Lt. Colonel... That would, in my mind, be a massive blow to everything they've been trying to get her to be. And I SHUDDER to think what the anti-shippers would say about it. They (a lot) already hate Sam enough.

She's only gone for 5 episodes... is it REALLY that hard to say "she's leading a mission, she's in contact every once in a while, this new guy is just keeping her seat warm while she's away" !?!?!? I really don't see why they would need to make a massive thing out of it... granted, AT will be on a lighter schedule than last year, but stilll, that doesn't merit making her RETIRE or anything!!!

However, if she really did retire... She'd better be doing some damn important other job! And still, there are tons of civilians on SG teams!!

I still think it would be ridiculous to make her retire, Dr. Carter should stick with the AU's!

How when he actually died, she simply held his hand, and closed her eyes... it was beautiful, that's really the only word I can think of rite now to describe it.
You've just given me another reminder of why I like this thread. I read some posts on the Threads thread (giggles at the the way that sounds) where the posters were complaining about her lack of emotion in that scene.
                              Spoiler:
You're right, she didn't play it over the top, and it was much more effective. Besides, her reaction when he first broke the news that he was dying was more emotional, and very moving as well.
