I'd be happy then because I get to see Carter flying (in that funky G-Suit!), Carter getting dirty on the ground and Carter bonding closely with Teal'c.
Actually I think astrogeologist wrote a great fic that had a bit of that in it

Perfect, Agent Dark. Pleaassee give us something like this in season 9, TPTB!!! As hrh36 said, we haven't had a full episode dedicated to the relationship between these two characters yet.

What fic is this, astrogeologist? I have read some of Skydiver's fic with sam and teal'c and it is so well written. TPTB need to hire you two for this script.

Two more Sam moments for me:

In Jolinar's memories: in the beginning when they know that the Tok'ra are coming to visit and Jack says something like, Maybe it's Dad. And sam simply says--"Maybe!"---the way she says it and the smile on her face in the anticipation that it is her Dad was great.

Tok'ra 2: great scenes between Jacob and Sam right before Jacob is going to go through with the joining with Selmac. Powerful scene between father and daughter -- so much expression in their eyes.

I had thought of many others, but am too tired to remember them right now!!!

I too am not a fan of the thunk threads---I like this appreciation thread because I think Sam is a good role model, a complex character, and it is a joy to read other people's views and thoughts on her character. I also think it is healthy that there is alot of support expressed for AT's superb acting. Let's hope she wins the Saturn award!! I too was wondering why she is not in the Best Actress category---I was thinking, how much screen time do you need to be considered in that category!! But I noticed MS is also in the Best supporting actor category, so maybe just the "STAR" gets to be in the leading category.

I too am glad that the focus here in this thread is on Sam, and is not overwhelmed by J/S ship. Everyone is striking a comfortable balance. And thanks for all the screen caps, once again, Astrogeologist!!

i think they choose the categories based on where they stand the best chance of winning

i remember with west wing, allison janney requested she be put up for lead instead of supporting (or vice versa) because she knew the competition and wanted to be nommed where she stood the best chance of winning
Where in the World is George Hammond?

I see. That makes sense. I didn't know you could choose. Maybe that's why MS is in the supporting catergory too, then.

well if MS is in supporting then they stand to win 4 total, if he's in lead actor, then they stand to only win 3 all total

i have no idea what their criteria are adn how they made thier decisions but it's a possible scenario, that the choices that were made were made to maximize the winning potential

Speaking of AT and awards ...

Did any of you ever watch her host the Canadian Awards presentations for Women in Film and Video about two years ago? Amanda was so funny as the MC of this show ... you could tell she was nervous, and she was ad-libbing like crazy. I don't think the video has been archived but, if enough of you are interested, I could try to search for the old site. At one point, there was a local choir of women singing and, when AT came back onstage, she made some comment that they looked like System Lords in their robes ... and she wanted to get her zatnickatel and shoot them At the end of the show, she mentions that one of the producers warned her not to drink any wine until after the presentations were over; Amanda just rolled her eyes and said sheepishly, "oh, yeah". It was really so much fun to see this side of her - the comedienne - onstage and unscripted (and a little bit tipsy I do believe).

The other anecdote is the first time she won the Leo Award (for Ascension). I read that she did not even prepare an acceptance speech because she really didn't think she had a chance of winning ... and, since her husband was away, she asked JR Bourne (Martouf) to be her escort for the evening. Of course, she did win and she said that she doesn't have a clue of what she said once she got on the stage - just that it came from her heart. So, we all know it must have been warm and funny and gracious.

                  Spoilers for Threads/IGTBK:

                  Spoiler:
Threads made me really happy with Sam's character. Actually, it's been improving throughout the second half of the 8th season from what I'm seeing lately. She handled the death of her father very well, in an honorable and dignified manner. On top of that, she finally found the strength to fix an impending mistake eg. the whole Pete debacle (I'd rather have Sam single or with most other guys that have come closely into her life than with him) and stay on the side of hope. I, for one, respect that decision. Good stuff in Threads. Sam's taking initiative, and it shows. And as for It's Good to be King, she made a fine CO. Proud moment there.

                    Hey,
there has been some great comment going on overnight.

Count me in on the pro SamandTealc episodes. I think the writers have failed to incorperate Teal'c into the show as much as they should have done. I think he's a great character - but they always shunt him off on a sub plot to give him time. I'd like to see him get more air time within the team - and with other team members.

I read a recent comment that Teal'c would be vying with one of the cast new comers to be head of the Jaffa movement. This worried me slightly as it sounded like he may not be in SG1? I think it was in the article which was discussing the new signings. Did anyone else pick up on that?

Thanks for the snippets on the awards. AT's so sweet!!

I've been reading the posts on the episode Hathor.

I didn't know whether to post my comments as I'm not sure if they would make sense - but everyone is very friendly and forgiving on this thread - so here goes!

Now whilst there was some stuff in there that I quite liked - Teryl getting in on the action and proving she isn't just a doctor was great. The fact that the women save the day in the end - and I guess hinting at the weaknesses of man were quite refreshing, however the ep never seemed to sit right with me.

There is one sentence that certainly had me shaking my head in pity for the writer.

"I can't figure out how to be one of the guys around these guys. I always feel like I'm the girl."

Now I've spent most of my life with males - playing football etc at school, cycling, rock climbing - etc mainly because non of my female friends were into that sort of thing. Now never have I wanted to feel like "one of the guys" - its just not an issue. I've always been just me and been happy to share the things I love doing. It just so happens that most of my friends are male and are on the whole great company. In fact quite often I have been in situations where I've been surrounded by men being men and I've been shaking my head taking the p out of them and being very thankful I'm a woman! Lets be honest on an emotional level we are very different

So it seemed to me such an odd comment to make. I really don't think Sam would sit around and frustrate about being a woman - or spend her time trying to figure out "how to fit in" with them at all. And I'm sure Sam is more likely to think if you treat me differently in the workplace because I'm a woman - that’s your problem.

So that sentence sort of had me a little worried about how the writer viewed women in the military - and women who like to do sporty, adventurous things in general. And I think that coloured my view of the ep a little bit.

ChopinGal: As to her being fooled by RepliCarter ... I think Sam's heart just overruled her head in that encounter and she wanted desperately to believe that RC was redeemable.
Maybe Sam felt that if RC wasn't redeemable, then maybe she would find a side of herself that wasn't what she wanted to be?

Astrogeologist, I was just thinking how good it would be to have screen caps of Teal'c handing the staff weapon to Carter! And... you made them! Thankyou.

And I watched Hathor tonight. The line you are talking about Coley, I don't know, I can't help but feel that maybe a woman in the Airforce might want to feel like 'one of the guys'. It doesn't necissarily mean that Sam doesn't like being a woman, only that being female you always have to try harder, I think. But hey, I'm only a baby, so what am I talking about.
Overall, it was good to see Hathor again, especially after AstroG's shots. It's still not my favourite for showing Sam, in comparison to say, 'Foothold', or 'A Matter of Time'. But It's better than my memory of the last time I saw it.

Coley, as I went back and watched season 1 again, that line stuck out to me as well. It did seem a little off. But I found other such moments in season 1, most obviously in the pilot, when Sam gives her "reproductive organs on the outside" speech. I don't picture Sam saying either line today, partly because Sam has changed, but mainly because the writers have changed.

I chalk it up to TPTB feeling their way into the character. They weren't sure how to write Sam at first, and it shows. Wasn't it during that first season when Amanda asked the writers to write Sam as a soldier, not a female soldier, and let Amanda take care of the rest? Once they had that input, things seemed to improve.

some of her 'one of the guys' i have to wonder if it came from real life

i seem to recal amanda saying in an interview or something that during the first season, she tried to bond with the guys. going out to clubs, even strip clubs, just acting like a guy

but then realized that she didn't need to do that to fit in with the cast, she just needed to be 'me' and let them accept her as she is

sometimes that's the hardest thing with guys. ok, i work in a place with a lot of guys....who also happen to be engineers and scientists, construction workers....it's the kansas department of transportation, so we run the gamut of everything from the pocket protector nerd to the guy who lays asphalt for a living

and it's a lot of guys...many of which were raised 'old fashioned' being that guys open doors, guys lift, all that gentlemanly stuff

we've also got the handfull of young guys who, well act like young guys

a lot of them have no idea how to treat a woman. they were taught to be gentlemen, of course we also have others who are randy young bucks

they don't quite always know what to do

i think the military may be that way in a way. and when guys don't knwo how to treat women, the women may not always know how to act

it takes some trial and error to find a way that works

HAHAH, Oh dear, now I'll have images of Amanda going to strip clubs in my head all day...

I don't know how this woud tie in with all the "one of the guys" thing, but I wanted to recount this tale of when Amanda was auditioning for Stargate. It was the time when she was just like, standing beside RDA to "see how they looked together" type thing, and he put his arm around her and stuff and said

"So what do you think babe? It's alright if I can call you babe, rite?"

                              To which she replied

"No, not at all, if you don't mind me calling you dick!"

                              I think that's a very intelligent reply.

Regarding the whole women in military thing, in my little thing the top 3 out of the top 4 ranks are females (including me Oh yeah, I got promoted the other week! EEEEEEEEEEH) And I must admit I do see that the guys still don't pay as much attention to what we say than what most of the guys say. I think that has part to do with we actually try and get stuff done while all the guys just mess around and slack off, but...

I think it all has to do with the person, and the circumstances. Variables everywhere!

                                Congrats on the promotion, MS!

I think you've hit the nail squarely on the head about Sam's complaint; she wants to be "one of the guys" in that she wants the same respect as "the guys" give each other.

In Hathor, Sam was treated rather pratronizingly by Jack when she tried to talk him out of letting the Goa'uld roam about freely on base - though admittedly, Jack wasn't quite himself at the time - but it makes you wonder whether she'd experienced such treatment before. I think the series says that she had.

Her "I can handle whatever you can handle" spiel in COTG seems to bear that out, as well as her "When was the last time you saw a woman assigned to the SGC" statement in Hathor.

Then there's Teal'c's dismissal of her orders(Hathor) when she said "We'll go on three." The look she gave him said to me that Sam was used to this sort of thing from guys. I also believe that Teal'c would not have reacted like he did if Jack had said, "On three."

Now here's a tiny detail from Matter of Time: She tells Simmons to close the iris. Simmons responds that it is an outgoing wormhole; that nothing came come in through it. She then reminds him that he's been given an order. Does anyone think that if Jack, Hammond, or even Siler had said, "close the iris," that the lieutenant would have argued?

Finally, fast forward to that horrible scene in Fragile Balance when Sam, the most experienced glider pilot in the room, was summarily dismissed by lower ranking and equal ranking flyboys, men who perked right up when the little male came in and took charge away from her. <rarrrguuggggrrrghhh!>

A Cherokee elder sitting with his grandchildren told them,
"In every life there is a terrible fight – a fight between two wolves.
One is evil: he is fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity,
resentment, and deceit. The other is good: joy, serenity, humility,
confidence, generosity, truth, gentleness, and compassion."
A child asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"
The elder looked the child in the eye. "The one you feed."
