what relationship aspects do i wish they would have covered better in season 8 (and into 9)? i'm going to skip past sam/jack (have talked about it already), and focus on one relay that i really wish would have been made an issue.

    cassie.

in heroes 2, it gave the impression that sam was in charge of cassie's well being then. not to say that she'd be her guardian (i don't know cassie's age at the time), but i remember sam saying she had to go pick up cassie, so... where's cassie now? college? is sam really cassie's guardian? how is cassie dealing with losing another mother? how's sam dealing with losing her dearest friend?

how would you guys like to have seen cassie dealt with in season 8, and dealt this in season 9?

Well, first and foremost, it would have been nice to see her...like maybe she was visiting Sam at the SGC and got locked in with them during Lockdown...that could have produced some really sweet moments between the two of them.

For instance, what if Cassie really hadn't talked much about losing Janet? This could have been a neat (and sadly missed) opportunity to explore her finally dealing with the grief of losing her and given Sam a chance to really shine as the mother figure/protector like she did in Singularity...

    Just a thought...

Sam/AT was hardly in this episode, but I really liked Sam as a firefighter - she had cool scenes... competent, energetic and heroic.

And that smile in that photo! Just makes me smile, can't help it!

Edited to add: like the hair too
Her snarkiness towards the 'Probie' was pretty fun too

      "Thats 'Captain' to you!"

I think it's interesting to note that in Teal'c's mind (he was dreaming basically) he had Sam as the Captain of the firestation. When you think about it, thats basically the role that she would have if she were commanding SG-1. Jack is the Cheif of the station (General at the SGC).
Keep in mind that this was a year and a half before they got their promotions, it's nice to see that Teal'c is confident in her abilities

And yes her hair is great too!
Great comments and observations, AD! I too, really liked Sam as the Captain of the firestation and Jack as the Chief (and more like Hammond) - Sam was a ranking officer, but she was still in the thick of things - very fun!

I'd love to see or hear more about what Cassie is doing - and more about the relationship between Cassie and Sam. I don't know if they could get the 'original' actress back (and haven't there been two different ones for Cassie?), but I do remember reading one of the posts on Joe Mallozzi's thread where he said that sometimes the reason why they don't have some characters 'come back' is because the actor/actress was too difficult, or the actor's/actress' schedule doesn't permit it. If that's true with the character of Cassie, then it would be nice if there were at least a few lines of dialogue that let us know what Cassie is doing and a little more about Sam and Cassie's relationship.

So, I'm with you, Sally - something about Cassie in Season 9 would be great

Colonel over an eight year span was actually quite slow, but maybe someone with more insight could give us intel.

I've read a lot of posts in other threads where folks heatedly debated whether Sam's promotions were too fast or too slow or just right - and there were folks ardently in each camp. My feeling is that it's scifi... and if they just put forth a reasonable explanation, they can do it and move on. One that would work for me would be to say that Sam's promotions were 'slowed down' because Jack and Hammond and others wanted to keep her at the SGC - if she'd recieved her promotions faster, there might have been more pressure for her to be assigned to the Pentagon or some such. Or they could say that over the years, Sam turned down a couple of offers of her own SG team because she wanted to stay on SG-1 (and along with turning down her own team, she was turning down the promotion that went with it). So now, they could say that they are making up for lost time....

Perhaps they could mention something like this in passing...I think it'd be neat if they made a point that she had career advancement opportunities she set aside for the team...

Well I don't really know much about how the US military handles promotions, but I always thought that field promotions (during a time of war) were basically handed to junior officers who had to move up and fill the shoes when a senior officer was killed or wounded. Of course there might be other circumstances when an officer would get promoted.

I just googled and found this article. Ignore the 2nd half of it, but the first half talks about the promotion system for an officer's career.

Sam got promoted to O4 (Major) in two years on the show, so that would suggest she'd been a Captain for at least 7 years prior to joining the Stargate program. The O4 to O5 seems about right (5 years and she made Lt Colonel). That would mean she'd get promoted to O6 (Bird Colonel) at about Season 13/14 (maybe 12) of SG1

AFIAK, the President of the US has the power to promote any officer to a General rank, but not any rank below. So that could be why Jack (one star) gets Hammonds Job (3 star).
My point? Guess I don't really have one, other than that I'm bored at Uni
All I'm saying is that if they follow the normal promotion paths, Sam wouldn't be making Colonel anytime soon (unless it had something to do with promotion during Wartime, which I've got no real clue about)

Perhaps the President or VP of Samanda could draft a law along those lines...

i declare, as vice president of samanda, that the peeps here must vote everyday to make sure samanda remains a five star hotel.

Well, I owe you big time, chocdoc. And, yes there should have been many more SamJan scenes. I can never get enough of those two. Speaking of which ...
Perhaps Sam's S9 absence could be explained by having her off with Heimdall, busy cloning Janet. (Which would solve two problems in one.)

But seriously ... no more children for Carter until TPTB police up the neglected Cassandra storyline. Cassie's been AWOL and, according to 1969, she's supposed to become part of the Stargte program in the future. Not that canon seems to count for much anymore.
And please—let the notion that S9 will all be AltUniverse turn out to be some kind of grisly joke! (Shades of the "dream" season of Dallas.) My head still hurts from puzzling out the triple parallel timelines in Moebius.
That Amanda photo w. the plunging decollatage almost gave me heart palpitations. Then somebody suggested having Teal'c singing—which reminded me that I'd heard excerpts from Christopher Judge's ill-advised rock album ... and did that ever kill my buzz!

And now that the VP has signed the law into effect, I think that ChopinGal should be called into service to create a Royal Proclamation.

Thanks for the info, AD! And since that is those are the average guidelines for the 'standard career progression', I think it's entirely reasonable that saving the world repeatedly allows for a well-deserved accelerated timeline - especially since she can't wear medals and ribbons for all those heroic missions and years of service in the secret SGC!

I admit I'm not a huge S/J shipper - however I really have enjoyed the interplay between them the late few years - so YES I did raise my hand .
I should also say that when Martin asked the question about shippers there were a few people that did not know what shipper meant. They were a couple of people sitting around me that said "What's a shipper?" When I explained to them a few said "Oh! well I guess I should have raised my hand"

BTW, did anyone ever read the AT interview where she admits to having played some folk-guitar duets with RDA during their off time? She also shyly states elsewhere that she would never play in public. I often thought it would be great though if we could have seen Sam and Jack playing guitars as hobbies in the show. Camping out around the fire and playing guitars and Daniel and Teal'c singing along ... now that's my idea of a great ensemble script!
I'm a middle school band/choir director and freelance musician. I spent 7 years on the road with a Christian music group as a woodwind specialist playing Saxophone (Soprano, Alto, Tenor & Bari), Clarinet, Flute, & Oboe. Traveled to 49 US states (missed Hawaii) & 56 other countries around the world.

Currently I'm playing with 2 different Jazz Bands and I usually play in the pit orchestra for 4-8 musicials a year - Just finished "Music Man" & "Beauty & The Beast" - start rehearsals for "Suessical" next week. Tonights rehearsal was with one of the jazz bands for a big concert we have on May 12th (we rehearse once a week).

I don't remember were I saw it but I have seen a picture of Amanda with a guitar in her trailer on the set. The first time I meet her one of the things I asked her was about her musicial interests and she said that she does play some folk guitar but not in public.

Well I have a zero block (7:00 am) jazz band rehearsal with my school jazz band so I need to head off to bed - I'll try and post a few more things from the con tomorrow.

But here is one last tidbit for tonight about Amanda mentioned this past weekend. Christopher Judge & Michael Shanks were on the same panel when they were told they only had 2 minutes left on stage they said they would quickly answer the questions of the 12 people still in line waiting to ask questions - It was fun watching them answer things in lighting round fashion running back and forth from one side of the stage to the other. Someone asked Christopher why they changed the style of hats they were from Season 1 & 2 to the new style in S3. Chris said "Amanda was having hair issues!"
