I have to say that this thread is one of the reasons that I finally bit the bullet and registered- I love all the fabulous intelligent discussion that goes on here! I'm a huge Sam fan- definitely my favorite character, and I wouldn't watch the show without her. From all I've read about Amanda, she seems like an absolute doll as well- I'd love to meet her, but don't see *that* ever happening Anyway, just popped in to say hello~ I'm so glad I found some folks who love Sam as much as I do!
Welcome to Samanda, cd ... good to have you here!

It's our Sam-Safe-Zone ... feel free to jump right into the friendly and thoughtful discussions.

I'm telling you, our Wise Elder is no slouch - this is definitely the photo I meant - thanks!

As you can see, Amanda certainly doesn't seem to have naquadah reactors on her mind ....

Re: Sam's 'hot' photos ... and Chris Judge as photographer ...

        Please, share
This was revealed by CJ, himself, in The Illustrated Companion, Seasons 5 and 6:

"Well, I've always been a keen photographer ... so I've been honing that craft. I really want to do stuff for the big glossies, Maxim, Vogue - publications like that. I have a studio and am building up my portfolio ... I've taken some really cool shots of some of the cast here. Some really sexy shots of Amanda and Teryl." Rumbling with laughter, Judge admits, "Jan Newman, our make-up supervisor, doesn't like them because they look a little too glamorous if you get my drift."

Yeah, Chris, I think we definitely get your drift ....

Just watched one of my favorite episodes, Metamorphosis. I love Sam's acting in the cell as her condition gradually worsens ... her body language and facial expressions really say it all. My favorite moment, though, is Jack running back into the cell and gathering her up in his arms to save her ... sigh ... and her just murmuring "sir".
Are there any good fanfics that address the repercussions of Sam's time in the machine better than the episode does? What if her genetic code really couldn't be put back together again? What if there was some residue ... something left over from the ordeal? How come Jonas seems to have an adverse reaction later in Prophecy, but Sam (who was initially more injured in Nirrti's machine than Jonas) never seems to suffer any after-effects? Inquiring minds want to know ....

And if the machine came from the Ancients, Sam was right in asking to study it further. Too bad Jack shot her down on that one. Under controlled conditions, Sam and Jonas could have explored what the machine was capable of doing ... just a thought.

So, fellow writers - did any of you tackle this episode in a fanfic?

Chopingal -- there are some fics out there dealing with just this topic... but I can't remember the names of them . Skydiver might remember the titles... I've also found that if you ask at the Yahoo Groups samandjack or carterfic - folks usually come back with the titles pretty fast (some folks have such great memories...!).

Haven't seen it yet.. but am ok with spoilers (if they are hidden with spoiler tags so we don't upset those who want to wait until they can see it).

Adding to the favorite moments--most of the ones I would have said have already been taken...My favorite line in "the Light" is when Jack prompts her to say "sir" and she says something like "you think I'm keeping *that* up if we're trapped here forever?!"
and in Upgrades I love how Sam writes a book in a few hours.

Regarding Sam and personal life stories: I agree that it didn't *dominate* all of season 7 (or 8 from what I've seen so far) but again, what I'd like is personal tidbits in the context of the regular show. I thought the episode with Orlin (season 5) did that pretty well. We got to see her house, her car, her interacting outside of work, but the story was about more than "Sam at home."

Great scenes Jackfan55! I added them to the summary list.
And for the scene in Upgrades - I really liked how they had the computer unable to keep up with her typing - lol! I also got a kick out of her attitude with Janet...

Sam's typing very fast. The computer needs time to catch up.
She's waiting while the computer runs what she typed.
                      Janet walks in.
                      JANET: Hey!
                      SAM: Hey!
JANET: What are you working on?
SAM: I'm writing a book on wormhole physics, but this damn computer isn't fast enough. When the buffer's full, I have to wait for it to catch up.
JANET: You know, we REALLY could use your help.
SAM: You just don't get it, Janet. I don't WANT to take it off.
JANET: OK. I realize they're making you FEEL really good ---
SAM: (Laughs) Look! I have written a 1000 page book in under 2 hours! I man, this is something I've been dying to do, but haven't had the time!
                      JANET: Sam ---

Yes, great acting. AT just pulls you in to Sam's situation. For me a classic Sam moment in that episode is also when Jack says she'll be fine and she says "I don't think I will, sir" and you know she *knows* she's dying.
I also love how even in her weakened and dying condition, she is still thinking--such how the guy couldn't read minds all the time or Jonas wouldn't have been able to jump him. No waiting to be saved--she's pitching in to the very end. That's one of the things that makes Sam so great.

Stated perfectly jckfan55! That's definitely one of the aspects of Carter that I like so much - she's selflessly heroic - and she doesn't dwell on herself.

Metamorphosis is one of my favorites too. I like Sam teasing Jonas at the beginning- "Jonas, you're such a chickensh*t!" They're really acting like brother and sister at that point.

I like her courage in the face of impending liquidness, when she's being escorted from the cell to meet with Nirrti -"At least I'll find out how machine works."

You're so right about Amanda's body language. I posted some of this on another thread a while ago, but I'll repeat it here.

Amanda's facial expressions are so wonderful that it's easy to overlook the physical mannerisms that she brings to her craft. Sometimes it's the little things that you hardly notice, but add to the scene.

There's a scene in the cell when she has to pull herself up using the bars and then uses her hands to lift her leg up. It looked like just the right motion for someone who's disabled or so tired that her legs won't move anymore.
