I figure it's about time Baal got his own thread of worship. ;) Goodness knows he's the (false) god I'd choose to serve, in any way I could. :D
He has style, he has charisma, he has that deliciously bloodthirsty edge that has helped him rise to the top of the system lord food chain. What's not to love about this guy?? He also has impeccable fashion sense and a certain flair when it comes to tormenting his victims. Baal make it personal. I love that in a (false) god.
Anyone else with me on this?? C'mon, I can't be the ONLY one... :P

He can do some neat stuff with gravity and tomic acid, if I recall correctly.

He's one of the few Goa'uld with style left; this makes him an invaluable asset to the show, as the others -Chimera spoilers- (Apophis, Osiris, etc.) have been killed off.
The new Japanese Goa'uld has promise in the style department, but we have not yet seen enough of her to judge. For now, Baal has the looks, the storyline, and everything else.

I ADORE Baal.
Baal is the bomb! (ugh, now I know why I don't use that phrase).
He is the only Goa'uld I can take seriously at the moment - Anubis didn't really do it for me. I didn't find myself wanting to kneel at his feet, as I do Baal.
There is nothing better than a great but not cliched (as much as that is possible with his species) villain, one that earns his respect rather than expecting it just coz he has a cloak.
I mean how much effort did Anubis have to put in to his daily wardrobe?? Very little.
In fact, I doubt he ever laundered that thing. How does a semi-ascended being approach hygiene matters??
Anyway - back to Baal. Wonderful villain played by wonderful actor. Sultry villain played by sulty actor. He's the best Goa'uld out there at the moment, and I even thought he was better than Osiris.
I really hope they keep him around :D

Baal is one of the best things to happen to Stargate villainy in a long while and he's played to perfection by Cliff Simon. ;) He has a bit of the goa'uld cliche-ness about him, but not as much as some system lords I could mention. :P
I always look forward to seeing him because I know something interesting is going to happen, usually in a very Chinese curse sorta way.
Hope we'll get to see more of him in S8. Actually, I'm sure we will, I just hope he doesn't suffer from the same entropy as some of the other characters/plotlines. :P Give us Baal in all his glory! :D

Ba'al's definitely the best baddie at the mo. He's so suave and confident, he's not in the least bit blustery like many goa'uld tend to be. Comparing him in Abyss with the one who tortured Teal'c in Serpent's... Venom(?) I know which one I found more chilling, and more intriguing.
He likes to combine his evil and practical sides - he tortured Jack for tactical info, but you could tell he got a kick out of his inventiveness in how he did it. Likewise it may have seemed necessary to him to have Jack tortured, but he chose to do it himself rather than delegate the task.
I think he relished the challenge of a 'new' enemy - he hadn't been personally involved with the Tau'ri before then, and had spent countless centuries with only other goa'uld to contend with. Jack's arrival was probably quite exciting. Since then

He's found himself briefly allied with Earth, and then decided to help himself to it. My guess is that (post 8.02) he's right now furious at having been thwarted, but also a bit pepped up at the realisation that there is a real challenge for him. I'm really hoping that we see more of him this year.

Ba'al is by far my favorite system lord. From when he was introduced by Yu (I believe it was him) to now, he is awesome. He has a sense of style, professionalism, and dignity that we haven't seen in most of the Goa'uld we've encountered.

Well I have to say Anubis is my favourite. So please do not start insulting me.It's a matter of taste.I'm just saying Anubis is my favourite systemlord but it doesn't mean I can't find Ba'al neat.I think Ba'al is also very cool,he has humor, good dresser, style.I like Ba'al. I think I placed him in my top 5 of bad guys.I'm not sure but I like him.Just not that much as I adore Anubis but that's my choice.I have respect for the people who love Ba'al.I hope you people have respect for me because I adore Anubis

Should I go back and edit my first post.
This is a BAAL Appreciation Tread, it is not a "Baal's OK, but I like so-and-so better" Thread. :P People who post here are supposed to like Baal. They don't have to love him best out of everyone, but soliloquies to other characters should be kept to a minimum. Or left out of the thread entirely, unless it relates. "I think Baal and Jack had great chemistry." would be an example of talking about another character in relation to the subject of this thread.
Anubis, it's obvious that you like Anubis. Anyone who sees your name is gonna know that. But for the purposes of THIS thread, try and keep it on topic, please. YOU may like Nuby best, but it is not a universal opinion and those of us here are obviously going to do a bit of looking down upon other characters, both sincerely and as a tongue-in-cheek sort of condescension. If you don't like that, fine. Start an Anubis Appreciation Thread. But please don't defend YOUR fave character on OUR Character's Thread. It'd be like going to the Sam/Jack Shipper thread and saying, "Yeah, Sam and Jack are OK, but Sam and Daniel are WAY cooler!" It's just bad form. :P
Now that that's out of the way, maybe we can get back to worshipping Baal. :D I get the feeling he has some really nasty tricks up his sleeve that'll keep SG-1 hopping this season. More power to him. ;)

Ba'al is styilin.
He's got the clothes and the gadgets and the power/budget to do most anything he wants.
His writing is great and he speaks it well.
He's the SG equivalent of a Bond villain really......i have visions of him with Carter strapped to a table.....'No Col. Carter, I expect you to die!!!"
I do hope we get to see more of him this season....though i suspect they'll spend more time on Anubis and his quest for a host :( Anubis was much more interesting when his history was unknown....lol
If somebody has to blow up Earth....i figure Ba'al's the man....he'll do it with style and wit and flair....

Cliff Simon has also appeared in some South African soap opera I can't remember the name of (Something: Something Gold) and, I think, a bit part in Iron Eagles 5. Otherwises, you'll probably have peruse the Theatre section of the Vancouver Sun and keep your fingers crossed. I don't actually know for a fact that he does theatre, but most actors seem to do a bit. CS live and on stage must be quite a sight to behold. *sigh* Maybe I should be checking the Theatre section, next time Gatecon rolls around. Could find all kinds of goodies. ;)

seeing as I've just put this up at the MS/Daniel Appreciation Thread for the sake of fairness I thought I'd put it here too.
It's about the posting of pics, and I'd appreciate it if everyone would have a read and inwardly digest the rules concerning posting pictures. (and please...more Baal pics...mmmmmm er... where was I... oh yes, back to my post)
We have developed a set of rules for the posting of pictures and images here at the GateWorld forum, and would like to request that everyone keep to them and not leave it to the mods to give a hefty nudge.
1) There is a great way to attach pictures to the thread, using them to make thumbnails so that folks can see what's there without that same picture downloading over and over and over. Just use the attachments button below. This is the preferred way of posting pictures!
2) If you choose to put the photos in your post, they do have to fit a couple of criteria;
a) They cannot be larger than the forum boundaries, 300x400 is a good size.
b) They cannot be larger than 75K.
3) If they are called from another server you must have permission to hotlink to them. Links like this do put a drain on servers and too many folks linking to too many pictures has been known to take a server down every once in a while.
4) You cannot quote the pictures in your replies. Multiple copies of the pics just drain more bandwidth.
5) Last but not least, please do not post pictures that spoil season 8 of Stargate SG-1 or season 1 of Stargate:Atlantis! Feel free to post links to those pictures with the appropriate warning of spoilers though.
Thanks to all - and as usual if you have any questions about this, or anything else pertaining to GW moderation, please leave us a message in the Ask the Mods thread.

Guys,
Just been going through my emails - it would appear that Cliff Simon is going to the German Convention in December on the 11th and 12th and wants to go to the Wolf Con here in the UK in London but as yet hasn't been invited (can't get his agent to do so because he hasn't got an agent at the moment) and was wondering (seeing as i run his webby) if anyone could pass the message on to anyone in the know?

* He's flamboyant without being a diva. He smirks without looking silly. He sneers at will. All while maintaining his lofty sense of self-importance
* He has more fashion sense than all the other Goa'ulds (well except Osiris ;) )
* He has inventive torture devices - knives and acid flying across the room - how cool is that! Gravity prisons - how cool is that!
* Ba'als smarter than your average Goa'uld (reprograms DHD viruses in a flash)

"Flamboyant without being a diva" -- I like that.
Ba'al has always been my fave system lord. He is so sinister in his smugness.
He is condescendingly evil, shows disdain in his cordiality, and is quite
pleasant while pouring acid on folks! Plus, he has great enunciation!
But he is never over-the-top. Doesn't chew up the scenery. And he looks
fantastic while not chewing scenery.
I think Cliff does such a great job at showing such malevolence with a
twinkle in his eye in "Abyss." This system Lord truly enjoys his work!

I totally agree! I got my picture taken with Cliff at the German City Con - I thought long and hard because initially I wanted Michael Shanks' pic- but then I went for the evil guy (and got a round of applause from the other guests because it seems liff didn't get that many solo pictures with people :D)
I sure hope we see some more Ba'al soon!

I think Ba'al is one of those Goa'ld's who has really got intelligence and class. I think he will be the SGC's biggest challenge yet, and it'll be great to watch.

Can't let Baal fall too far down the ranks. AFAIC he's still the scrummiest of all the goa'uld. :D I wonder what his host's story is, though. Think he was just an ordinary guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, or was he some kind of evil dictator type and Baal-the-snake used that to his advantage? Or maybe the host even volunteered, knowing he would be wielding ultimate power. ;)

I like the idea that at least one of the System Lords has a not unwilling host. I'm still writing my Heru'ur fic to that effect, but it could just as easily be Baal... who is even more scrummy than Heru'ur.

Ba'al is by FAR my favorite Goa'uld, and a lot of that has to do with the way Cliff Simon plays him. It's in no way "cheesy" or "over the top"; which, unfortunately, is a fate a lot of the other Goa'uld's have fallen victim to.
He's threatening, without resorting to the "Mwahahaha, soon you will die by my hand and I shall rule over your kingdom... err... world... or Stargate Command" stance. Or something similar to that. :p
I can't even picture Yu or Anubis ever crossing over to Atlantis; 'cause I'd seriously expect them to be laughed right out of the galaxy. (I'm visualizing something like McKay's line in Redemption, part II "Hey, Anubis, this is your agent, you're playing it way over the top. Can you get serious, please?!")
But with Ba'al it's another story, altogether. We've seen, up close, just what he's capable of; with the torture of Jack in Abyss. That episode worked, not only because of the interaction with Jack and Daniel, but because of the interaction with Jack and Ba'al. It felt REAL. It showed Jack, for once, actually being afraid and letting the audience know it. I couldn't possibly picture this episode featuring Anubis, for instance. It would have ruined the impact of what Jack had to go through.
I wish we would have gotten some more Goa'uld's similar to Ba'al, because it provides a much more realistic and emotional storytelling than simply having cartonish characters like Anubis chasing after SG-1 and threatening them with impending doom. Black cloak and scary voice does not an intriguing character make.
So, yeah, I'm appreciative of Ba'al. Very much so. :D

I think Martin Wood said there was a brief and regrettable scene in Abyss where Jack broke down and cried, admitting to Daniel that he "can't do this anymore." So yes, I'd say Baal is VERY effective at what he does. I've said it before, but I'll say it again: Baal makes it personal. He finds your weaknesses and he exploits them. And while he's content to do something distantly evil, he's also good at the up-close stuff, like the talvak acid and knives used against Jack. Zero Hour Plus, as an example of more "remote" torture, there was the bluff about capturing SG-1. Sure, he'd have done it with any team, but I think he knew that the capture of SG-1 would hit Jack particularly hard.
Hmm... Baal didn't seem to express surprise that Jack was in Stargate Command. Did he? Did he therefore know that Jack wasn't with his team? Or did Jack send out nice little cards through the galactic postal service, letting everyone know that HE was now in charge of Stargate Command and was no longer in charge of SG-1? ;) Have there been any "Where is Colonel O'Neill?" moments in S8 like there was at the end of S5 when Osiris asked about Daniel?

Spoilers for Zero Hour:
Not that I can recall. It does seem as though TPTB are counting on the rest of the Universe to automatically catch on to the fact that it is Jack who is now in charge of things. Simply because he's, well, Jack. ;)
Wouldn't the cards have been a nice touch, though? :p
Speaking of Zero Hour; as much as I liked that episode, it seemed like a bit of a missed opportunity in not having Jack react in a less "snarky" way when Ba'al showed up. At least the first time around. Granted, that's just the way O'Neill is, and yes I did laugh, but it still feels as though we could have had a bit more of a tie-in to the events that took place in Abyss. I am grateful that it was at least brought up, but it would have been great to see more of a reaction from Jack himself. Although, I have to admit I'm not TOO disappointed about it, because it's still one of my favorite episodes of s8, thanks to the humor of it. So, it's a fine line, I guess. I almost always want more than what we get on-screen.
Another good thing with Ba'al is that when he says those typical Goa'uld "You dare mock me?" lines, I actually buy them. They don't sound silly coming from him. Thankfully.

Mmmmm, Ba'al. LOVE him. I can't think of a single better tv villain EVER! He's tall, dark, and handsome, and he totally knows it--exactly my type! Except for the whole bent on the destruction and/or enslavement of Earth part...
Plus, he's very cool--he never loses his temper, just plots his revenge; as they say, "don't get mad, get even". And I can't wait to see how he plans to get even with Jack for his continued defiance and "impudence"! I really hope the writers realize his potential and keep him around for awhile. I'm not sure they've handled him as well as they could have this season. The Jack-Ba'al interaction was missing a little something for me; first, as many have pointed out, Jack was just a little too flip, even for him. Plus, I just wasn't feeling the malice from Ba'al quite as much. I would have liked to see Ba'al rub the events of Abyss in a little--like, yeah, you weren't so cocky when you were begging me to end it, O'Neill. Along with a promise of a little more one-on-one time together in the future...

Funny you should mention that...
Jafana and I were just discussing the other day that most of her customers seem to share common traits with the Goa'uld and that her job really amounted to assisting them in adapting to life on earth as a non-deity.

Baal really is wonderful in this ep. It's like Cliff was finally allowed to stretch the character a bit...give him some subtle new beats.

Ba'al is without doubt the most incredibly charismatic dude around - and he's got some of the best dress sense of any System Lord. No - strike that. The best dress sense.
Not only that, he's totally eeeeeeevil, and totally super smug about it, too. That's my kind of bad guy.
And I just luuuuuuuurve his accent! (oooh...shiver)

Nice! VERY nice. :D
I really wish Ba'al would have been much more featured in the s7-8 episodes overall. Cliff Simon is such a wonderfully charismatic actor and I would have MUCH preferred having the focus on him, instead of on Anubis and his supersoldiers.
Well, IMO just about anything would have been better than most of the storylines we got in s7-8, but had we gotten more of Ba'al I might have been able to tune some of that out more easily. :p
Reckoning, part II is one of the few season 8 episodes I will gladly rewatch and a lot of that has to do with Ba'al's interaction with Sam and, in particular, Jacob/Selmac. Funny stuff. :D

Is it just me, or is Ba'al one of the few go'auld characters whose voice is not "flanged" as much as some of the others? I think that Cliff has such a wonderful accent and powerful voice that he doesn't need the extra strengthening the "flange" effect supplies as much as some of the "lesser gods" with weaker vocal skills. What does everyone else think?

Here goes:
"Cliff's voice works really well - with the flange - beacause, it's just thin enough. It gives you a lot of room to move in and so it makes him that much more powerful."
May I suggest you go and check for yourselves? There's a video on this (http://www.germancitycon.de/goodies_e.html) site, entitled 'A little Christmas-Greeting from our stars from GCC 04'.

Merrin I really truly love your sig - normally I dislike big sigs but this is just sooo silly - see now we know where Sam disappears to at the beginning of season nine - Ba'al's taken her to be his new queen overwhelmed by her dazzling intellect and yet grace under fire ... and cos he knows a relationship with Sam will be the ideal way to upset Selmak the Tok'ra!!!
Recyt all
Yes I really truly enjoyed Reckoning and Cliff Simon's performance was one of the reasons why!
I do wonder if the man is owned by cats though as he's really got the whole superior feline teasing of lesser beings thing down pat!!!
I loved that scene where he turns his back on the sight of Anubis checking out his new host in a mirror and has this look on his face that was a truly beautiful moment of craft !!!
I do hope we see more of Lord Ba'al in Season Nine!!!

baal is my favourite bad guy, with his cool south african accent, he totally rocks the scenes. I hope he never gets killed off, he rocks so much it aint funny. None of this "half-ascended" crap, he could take you out one-on-one. Hardcore bad guy, like the old school action hero badguys, who have to be taken out really badly for them to get killed.

Baal (bā'əl) , plural Baalim (bā'əlĭm) [Semitic,=master, lord], name used throughout the Bible for the chief deity or for deities of Canaan. The term was originally an epithet applied to the storm god Hadad. Technically, Baal was subordinate to El. Baal is attested in the Ebla texts (first half of 2d millennium B.C.). By the time of the Ugarit tablets (14th cent. B.C.), Baal had become the ruler of the universe. The Ugarit tablets make him chief of the Canaanite pantheon. He is the source of life and fertility, the mightiest hero, the lord of war, and the defeater of the god Yam. There were many temples of Baal in Canaan, and the name Baal was often added to that of a locality, e.g., Baal-peor, Baal-hazor, Baal-hermon. The Baal cult penetrated Israel and at times led to syncretism. In the Psalms, Yahweh is depicted as Baal and his dwelling is on Mt. Zaphon (Zion), the locale of Baal in Canaanite mythology. The practice of sacred prostitution seems to have been associated with the worship of Baal in Palestine and the cult was vehemently denounced by the prophets, especially Hosea and Jeremiah. The abhorrence in which the cult was held probably explains the substitution of Ish-bosheth for Esh-baal, of Jerubbesheth for Jerubbaal (a name of Gideon), and of Mephibosheth for Merib-baal. The substituted term probably means “shame.” The same abhorrence is evident the use of the pejorative name Baal-zebub (see also Satan). The Baal of 1 Chronicles is probably the same as Ramah 2. As cognates of Baal in other Semitic languages there are Bel (in Babylonian religion) and the last elements in the Tyrian names Jezebel, Hasdrubal, and Hannibal.

David's comments confirm everything I felt while listening to Cliff speak! I am also duly impressed that you took the time to find the indisputable answer to my original query. I bow to your diligence and utter perfection, Shadow! :D
Er... Yes. So I won't ruin your admiration by saying I was looking for something else at the time. ;) It was also Cliff-related, at least. :D

I know that Ba'al is mighty in every way but how hard can it be to defeat someone called "Yam..."

Wasn't Ba'al fabulous in Reckoning I last night? The scene where he cocks his eyebrow is one of my favorites in the whole episode. And he only gets better next week in Reckoning II.
the looks he gives walter and the finger drumming waiting for jack and the way he says "yes" when jack says his line along the lines of "including your sweet self"... my favorite moments in the episode :D also those wonderfully evil snarkly looks he gives anubis when he's not watching ;) :D ONLY baal could get away with that :D

All indications that Ba'al doesn't take himself too seriously, methinks. For a start, he would have said, had he really believed all that god stuff, after "including your sweet self", "Gods cannot die" or something similar. Apophis would have because I think Apophis kinda bought into all that. I think Anubis did (does?), too. The eyebrow is my favourite bit because it conveys such a wide ranging editorial: from "For cryin' out loud, ego much?" to an "Eeeewww, that's gross".
Watched Summit and Last Stand yesterday (first time in ages). I notice when he pulls the symbiote out of the tub, he's very careful not to get his sleeves wet. And what's the sort of staff thing he has in that eppie? Is it a skull? What if his host was a mage or something? That'd be cool. :D

lol... yeah... i agree... he KNOWS he's not a god, :p and really doesn't take it all too seriously... and he doesn't really buy into anubis either... hence the snarkly expression...
i remember that from last stand too!! he's kinda.... argh, what's the word.... well, not the get down and dirty type.... :D
prissy in a bada$$, thug kinda way :D

Ba'al = Cool.
Yes that's right. Because he doesn't seriously say "I'm a god" and all this nonsense. He has waaay more personality than Anubis and Apophis.

I did indeed enjoy Reckoning last night. :D No complaints where Baal is concerned, except maybe "more, please!" ;) He DOES have a wonderfully expressive face. And that one scene with the eyebrow twitch was made even better with the slight rolling of his eyes. :D And that sneer... and that voice...That’s my complaint, too. :D Why couldn’t he have been in more of this season? It would have been an improvement. But I guess it gave tptb less time to possibly ruin the character, thus I treasure the moments he is on screen even more.
I just adored the heck out of him in Reckoning pt1. Bet he only gets better in the second part. Definitely solidified his place as my favorite Goa’uld. Though that really wasn’t in question. ;) He’s way more than your typical Goa’uld with all the prancing around and kneel before your god who can never die blah, blah, blah spiel. I enjoyed him more in the Ba’al/Jack scenes than Jack. At least he was being upfront serious about the situation. His expressions during the scenes with Anubis and then when her turned away from him in that last one were great.
Baal is just plain . That can't be said enough. :D

*wanders off grinning*
Oh thank you, thank you for sending me that link! Finally listened to it - oh man he has such a lovely South African accent. It kind of makes my toes curl - in a good way :D
And also thanks for posting that link with pics of Cliff from the German con.

My goodness -looks like he was doing a lapdance there in the last few pics. :D And why not - he certainly has the bod for it. But what's that guy doing grabbing him around the middle while he's laying on the floor. LOL! Is that Peter DeLuise??
You Ba'al fans - DO NOT MISS Reckoning II next week. Cliff/Ba'al is fabulous in it. After watching that episode he reigns alone as my favorite Goa'uld. The others just don't measure up with Ba'al ultimate coolness.

Well, I thought Apophis would be my favorite Goa'uld forever...and then Baal became the next big thing, and what can I say? I love his dignity, his gravity tricks, and his facial expressions. He doesn't play mysterious villian like Anubis, who's supposed to be so incredibly freaky. Personally, I find the idea of dying painfully a hundred times as your soul is stolen by the sarcophagus a lot more menacing than having your brain downloaded. And he does it with such a grave indifference!

Beautifully put! I agree so completely. His evil git-ness is the greatest part of his charm (charm? Next thing I'll be saying he's cute! Talk about the ultimate insult) :D
I particularly enjoy the fact that he's got the whole 'god' thing sussed with the Tau'ri. They know he's lying. He knows he's lying. We know he's lying. We all know where we stand!

Nah, not a git because that kind of denotes a certain stupidity. Ba'al is not stupid. Evil b*stard is more like it.

After viewing last week's episode, and having missed the first one after the break, I can only say that it seems Baal is not appreciated enough...being kept under the thumb of Anubis. Can't wait to see next week (this week) how he manipulates the Jaffa & SG-1 to get out from under...or so I hope.
