Lego Stargate Man
September 5th, 2004, 07:32 PM
Hi everyone,
Numerous people have asked me about the Stargate that I made out of Lego and put on display at the Toronto Trek 18 sci-fi convention this year. As a result, I have put up a web-page with pictures and instructions. I’m passing on the link in case anyone on this forum is interested in building one of their own. Check it out at :
http://yoda.ca/lego_stargate/lego_stargate.htm
The set is fairly extensive and includes (in no order) :
- STARGATE with 7 chevrons, as per the show
- Mount, with 6 wheels and extendible robotic arm
- Command Centre with missile turret
- Gun turret
- SG-1 Team mini-figures in green camouflage gear, including vests and arm patches with proper team number
- Teal’c mini-figure with head tattoo (but no hair, inspired from pre-season 8 episodes)
- SG-11 Team in dessert gear, including arm patches with proper team number
- Jaffa with armour vests & skirts, cobra head gear and staff weapons (to scale)
- General Hammond in dress uniform
- Walter Davis, trusty STARGATE operator
The set as a whole is made of over 515 individual Lego pieces (not including mini-figures).
Christopher Judge was a guest at Toronto Trek 18 and I had the honour of showing him the set and asking his thoughts on it. He liked it and was nice enough to pose for a few photos. I ended up giving him the Lego Teal’c to say thanks.
If anyone has any questions about the set, please feel free to PM or email me.

That's incredible. It must have taken you ages. I love the little Jaffa. And you've made an instruction book too...

The set took over a year to build, with three prior prototypes that I may post pictures of one day if I'm not too embarrassed (they were horrible!). I went through 4 or 5 Serpent warrior costumes before finally coming up with this design. I had lots of fun building the set, which is what is important. :)

Whoooooaaaaa, way cool!!!!! Again, must have taken forever. I can't believe you got those little cobra-head masks & uniforms. That in itself is quite a major accomplishment!
My only quibble would be that General Hammond, while he looks handsome indeed in his dress uniform, is bald.
However, as Jacob would say, Holy Hannah!! You're a devoted SG-1 fan, no doubt!!! WTG!!!

Alas, no, at least not officially. I had to create the set from scratch, inc. the Jaffa warriors. Having said that, the only pieces that are not standard Lego are the Chevron's (having a decal glued on them). Other than that, the entire set is from stock pieces.
The mini-figure are all modifications of some sort.

AWESOME!!!
I have a huge bin of lego parts and up until now I didnt know what to do with them all except make Star Wars ships. Maybe ill work on a ha'tak or an F-302 to supplement....
How'd you make the Jaffa helmets? They're the coolest!
You should make a small hair print to put on the back of Hammond's head to make him look balding as he is in real life.
EDIT: Do you have the Ancient Egypt explorer set? I have the one with the grey sphinx with the little pharaoh guy that pops out. He's my first System Lord!!!!!!

Lego rocks! If you want to quickly experiment with designs, I strongly suggest you check out ldraw.org. There is a piece of freeware there called MLCAD - it's a 3D Lego CAD program. I didn't have it when I was building the Stargate but it sure would have been useful. You just drag & drop pieces in 3D space, it's very easy to use. Once you have the basic design done, you can even have step-by-step instructions generated for you. it's great fun.
How'd you make the Jaffa helmets? They're the coolest!
Thanks for the great feedback, I'm glad you like them! The Jaffa helmets are modified Green Goblin helmets - I shaved of the nose and then used putty to smooth out the mouth & eyes. A little sanding, throw them on backwards, and voila! - you have something that looks a lot like the head of a cobra. A quick coat of grey paint to match the mini-figure body finished them off.
That's how they were made in three lines or less. If you want more detailed step by step instructions, I put together a manual and posted it on-line at http://yoda.ca/lego_stargate/lego_stargate.htm. If you look at the last chapter in the manual, it shows you how to make all the mini-figures yourself. Enjoy and have fun!

Wow! That is just so cool!
I remember when me and my sister were younger we somehow made dinosaurs out of Lego. I made a T-Rex, and my sister made a braceosaurus (spelling as eluded me).
Also reminds me also when me and my sister were younger we made the Empire State Building out of snow. It was pretty big. We even made out the little windows and everything. And the point! I took a couple pictures, then we acted like King Kong and destroyed it (and made little people fall out of the windows :P).
What really made me sad was that the pictures never turned out... :(

Believe it or not, only three times. I took over a year to get it right and I did spend a lot of time in between the prototypes thinking of how it could be built. Of course, during that year I had to figure out a logical, practical way of sorting / storing all my Lego as one giant bucket wasn't working. I was spending *way* too much time sifting through the pieces looking for that one 1x2 light grey brick I needed ;) All you Lego fans out there will know exactly what I mean. Now that I have a basic sorting system set up, future projects should go a lot faster.
Getting the Jaffa right took a *LONG* time as I fiddled around with 2 or 3 different types of head pieces before finally finding one that looked right. I was also fortunate that a local Zellers put on clearance a Lego Green Goblin set for only $3 each so I bought lots of them and had some material to experiment with.
If I get a chance, I'll dig up some pictures of the prototypes and post them for you to see, that is, if I'm not too embarrassed at how bad the thing looked the first time around.
I've moved on to another Lego project and should have the designs finished soon, then off to prototype #1. Then again, we just had our second child so I'm a little sleep deprived these days. I'll post more details when I'm a little further along.

Ya, that's it. I had already posted by the time I realized my mistake. It took me a while to realize what they *were* saying as when the characters on the show say M.A.L.P., they spit it out so fast I heard it as Mount.
Then again, have they always called it M.A.L.P.? I could swear that in one season rather another it was called a Mount ... then again maybe my recent lack of sleep is affecting my brain.

Hey, I'm the Lego Stargate guy's brother in law, and I share his LEGO obsession. His Stargate so blew me away, that he has inspired me. I am currently putting the finishing touches on a mini-Prometheus. I was originally going to try to make it big enough to put min-figs in, but realized that I would have to buy WAY more LEGO than I could possibly justify to my wife. (Plus, the thing would be FRIGGIN HUGE and never fit in my basement.) So, it is just a mini model. I will try to post a pic as soon as I get it finished.

My younger brother and I have made several models over the years, including a semi-trailer, a Hummer, and more recently, a Death Glider (or rather the F-302). At the moment I have attempted to create the Warthog from the game series Halo.
I am currently putting the finishing touches on a mini-Prometheus. ... I will try to post a pic as soon as I get it finished.

I have recently been exchanging emails with someone from Australia who found out about the Lego Stargate on this forum, took a peek, downloaded the instructions and is ready to go. I'm in Canada and think it's tres cool that someone on the other side of the planet is looking to build their own Lego Stargate!
This begs the question - where are everyone else located? I'd be really interested to know where you are located (country & possible state / province) and would appreciate it if you could drop me an email letting me know (lego_stargate@yoda.ca) or post something here.
BTW - Has anyone ever heard of incompatibilities with the Windows and Mac versions of MLCAD? I've been emailed by someone who is using a Mac and has had problems opening the model (it seems to merge multiple models together). Anyone have any thoughts?
Thanks in advance and keep building!

I downloaded your Puddle Jumper plans on MLCAD i was missing a few pieces in my database, still can't find them on the 'net anyways I tried to make an F-302 based off someone elses design. It looked okay but i wasn't satisified with how the wings looked.
Update-Right now I destroyed the F-302 to try and build the Puddle Jumper on the site. It didn't work lol so now i'm going to build the F-302 back hopefully better than ever!
This is a unfinished 3D image but finished design of my F-302 exact colors and all since i don't have much black flat piece:) The right wing is complete the left is not

Im a member of several Lego enthusiasts forums like Classic-Castle.com, BrickLink.com, EuroBricks.com, and Classic-Space.com...
Time and again, I've suggested to people who work for Lego who are also members of those communities that Lego should get a StarGate license. A lot of my fellow Lego fans has supported this. Yes, there are many AFOLs (Adult Fans of Lego) who also watch StarGate... cuz StarGate is that awesome! :D
Lego currently has a license with Lucas (Star Wars stuff), thus that MASSIVE Star Wars set.... set#10030 Imperial Star Destroyer with over 3,000+ pieces. Its built in "Nano-Scale", instead of "Minifigure-Scale" but its massive at 37inches long and 23 inches wide. Its under the UCS (Ultimate Collector's Series) line. However, this StarWars license is set to expire later this year in 2006 Fall. So it either get renewed, -or- they go back to Lego's own Space theme, -or- they get a license with the StarGate franchise!
The StarTrek license is under MegaBloks (competitor brand of inferior quality building blocks).
Just imagine how cool that would be. Lego currently makes Castle (medieval), Space (sci-fi), Town (modern) themes. A line of sets with a StarGate license, can merge all three themes. Imagine a set with Lego F-302s flying over a Lego medieval village and Lego modern Earth soldiers walking around with guns.
