Budgets determine # eps. Budget cuts reduce # eps season to season.

In the 1960's, a standard season would feature 30 episodes, 50 minutes long each.
In the 1980's and 1990's, a standard season would feature 22-26 episodes, 45 minutes long each.
In the late 1990's to the present, a standard season would feature 13-22 episodes, 42 minutes long each.

Why are episodes and seasons getting shorter? It's so the TV networks can show you more commercials.

and they are surprised that more and more people buy Replay boxes or just tape and fastwind thru commercials.

        the deadly cycle continues.
