SCI-FI FANTASY SHOWDOWN!
THE GREATEST SHOW EVER!
BY JOHN LATCHEM
THANK GOODNESS FOR DVDs — those magic discs that allow us to choose how and when we watch our favorite sci-fi/fantasy shows, freeing us
from the shackles of commercial TV broadcasts. DVDs introduce new generations to classic series while giving smaller shows a chance to
buildt audience no network would have allowed.

Another consideration is how long a show must run for it to be counted among the greatest. Where does "Firefly," which may have had
the shortest run of the shows we considered, rate compared to "Stargate: SG-1," which in entering its 10th season becomes the
longest-running American science-fiction series in history.
At some point, longevity must count for something.
"Stargate" has thrived during the glut of televised sci-fi in the 1990s. But that era began with the success of "Star Trek: The Next
Generation," which of course would not exist without the original "Trek." (Click here to see our pick as the top "Trek" show.)
