Joe Flanigan/John Sheppard Thunk Thread

Is it just all my female friends that I have showed Atlantis to, or do most women and some guys think that Joe Flanigan (Major Sheppard from Atlantis) is really cute and sexy?

Every person that I have showed Atlantis to comment on how attractive he is, one of my friends, who isn't a big Sci-Fi fan, said that she would jump at the chance to work alongside him or on top of him!

If this sort of thinking common amongst female or even some guys that watch this series?

Where can I find out more about the actor that plays Sheppard. This man has talent. He is perfect for the role. There is an interesting grace under pressure that is present in his action scenes, as if he has everything under control at all times. One smart cookie! Great casting. I want to see him in other projects. Joe rocks! :cool:

Too right...he's even waay better looking than RDA is, or ever was. I can understand why people are attracted to RDA though...but now he is getting a bit old and you gotta admit the grey hair and wrinkly skin isn't that attractive. It's good that they got something majorly good looking, because the only one who is in SG1 is Sam...and no-one else is on the Atlantis team in my opinion.

David Hewlett is just funny, none of my friends said anything about him, other than he was funny.

The reason: There is no general Atlantis folder, as this does not apply to any particular season, IMO it belongs in the general discussion area.

I think Maj. John Sheppard is very hot! He's got that jackass personality like Jack, but he can also be a real pussycat. I fell in love with him in the pilot. Plus, Joe is very sexy and hansome.

The *major* difference, imo, is that Jack doesn't have a clue to his appeal, but I get the feeling Shippard is a bit of a flirt and knows how to turn on the charm. In no way is that meant as a bad thing. :D

Sheppard is most definitely thunkworthy, but it's the character in combination with Flanigan that does it for me. Charming and witty, but also very caring towards the people around him. Plus, there's a part of him that's unpredictable, which I really like. Flanigan just adds that little something extra to all of his scenes.

Sheppard's my favorite character on Atlantis, just as Daniel is on SG1. In fact, I'm gonna go add him to my profile right now. :D

Ok, I have to admit....I too was an RDA/Jack purist...but I really enjoy Shep. He's actually the best in the show and what keeps me coming back to Atlantis. I do enjoy McKay....I thought he might be very annoying as he was in SG1...but he's tolerable in Atlantis....

I really love Shep's quirky looks. Seeing Shep/Jack side by side allowed me to really see the difference between the two while enjoying the scenery!

looking forward to new eps and a long run for Atlantis too!

Well I watched “thoughtcrimes” today. :p That was a pretty good movie considering it was made-for-TV. Okay the first hours was Joe-less and thus not as good, but the second hour had plenty of Joe-thunking-goodness to go around. :D Thank goodness I saw a thread posted that had listings of SG actors’ TV appearances or otherwise I would have missed out on all the hair porn. Both of those episodes do look good, especially since Shep is in a black t-shirt. I can't recall any episodes so far that show off his arms. (except 38 minutes) He's always got that dang jacket on, not that he doesn't look hot in it. Someone needs to carelessly "drop" it in the ocean. They just need to skip the jacket phase and forego it like SG-1 seems to do lately.

It took me forever to get a hold of, and there were a couple of mishaps along the way (people logging of in the middle, dubbing etc) but in the end: success! :D :D

He's such a wonderful actor, I completely fell for him in this movie too (or was it a pilot for a tv series?). Why couldn't it be possible for an actor to play leads in two tv shows at a time? Is that so much to ask? :p

Plus, now I know why he was checking his hair in the car. :D

And now I'm off to bed as it's the middle of the night and I'm sleepy. I shall dream pleasant dreams. ;)

OMG! I just finished watching Thought Crimes. And I loved it! I love the whole premise of the story, and the lead character was actually one that I wasn't annoyed with. And of course Joe was so adorable!

There were sometimes when I saw joe with his coat on it made me think of I X-files, becuase mulder and scully always wear the coats. I'm such a sucker for men in suits and long coats.

If they actually developed this into a series, I would have definately followed it, but I also love Joe as Sheppard. So i'm good either way. ;)

I'm not sure what you mean be what accent he has...cuz to me it just sounds like the usual American Californian accent, then again I live in California and I can't even tell if I have an accent or not. :s

But I've seen Joe F. In a couple other things and I he basically talks the same way. Then again I've only seen him play similar characters to Sheppard.

Well, seeing as how english isn't my first language, the accent thing usually passes me right by - unless it's really, really obvious - but as far as I could tell he sounds exactly the same in Thought Crimes as he does in Atlantis.

I've seen him in "Family Album", "Dawson's Creek", "Judging Amy", "The Other Sister", "Thought Crimes" and "Stargate Atlantis". His voice has been the same in all these shows. So has his hair. :D Thanks - so his voice is the same. That's nice... mmmm

but it's his accent that intrigues me now. He has a wierd way of saying thinks like "okay" and "MacKay" with a really flat 'a' sound. Sometimes it's almost like a Southern accent until he does that 'a' thing, which then makes me think of Canadians. Oh well. I guess I'll just have to watch and listen some more. ;)


BTW, I wander what Joes' wife thinks about all this. *Runs before someone hits her with a baseball bat.* :D :DWell, the idea of letching, so publicly, after someone elses husband is a bit icky. (I'm an old school feminist so I believe that 'other women's "men"' are the big taboo). I prefer to restrict it to the character. The few things I've seen Joe in - he sounds the same in all of them. Joe F was born in LA and grew up in Reno, Nevada (his family still has a ranch there according to an article I read). He sounds like a typical mid-Western U.S. accent to me. But then I'm from Texas and I don't think I have an accent at all. :p

I'm new here. Just wanted to say I love Joe/Shep and can't wait for discussions about him. He's beyond Thunk worthy. Such a gorgeous man in every way. Both the character and the actor. And a talented actor to boot. No one else on the show can say/express so much without saying a word. Joe does that with Shep.

Down to the tiniest of details. His reactions let me know what he's thinking. How he feels.

He uses his voice well too.

One of my fave moments to show that Joe never forgets to be IN the scene and IN the moment. In HOME when everyone is talking around him, Rodney is going on about what he'd have to do to the gate or whatever. And Sheppard is calculating the years it would take to go and rescue ROdney in the Jumper. Watch Joe's/Shep's face. You can tell he's calculating in his head and in that moment has detached himself from the conversation. Then he jumps back in with the answer. It's priceless.

Or in HOME when his DEAD buddies show up. His reactions when he opens the door and after he lets them in are superb.

And don't even get me started on 38 minutes. Nobody does pain like Joe. When they poured that water on the salt. His screams of pain. The way his body shook. His voice. The pain in his eyes. He would keep wincing. It made me believe. Also in the beginning when they flashed back and Ford was trying to shoot the bug off. The way John looked at Ford. The way he nodded. You could see his pain. Same when he was in the Jumper. You could see/feel his pain. Right in the first scene before they went through the gate. Or tried. Then he's knocked out and you can tell he's not in as much pain before he told Teyla he wasn't and why.

Anyhoo. I could go on and on and on! LOL

I so agree with you on Joe's acting in Thirty Eight Minutes, I completely bought it. It didn't feel like he was acting at all, it felt like he really was in pain. Wonderful job on his part.

Actually, there is an interview with him in this magazine called Starlog, that I really want to get my hands on, because he talks about how the most challenging episode, so far, really was Thirty Eight Minutes.

Well, I thunk first and foremost for Sheppard too. The character is what drew me in, in combination with the way that Joe plays him. And the way he plays him is what makes him so attractive to me. And, of course, the hair. :D

I lust after whatever character Joe plays. Brendan from Thought Crimes. SHep on SGA. Whatever. I admire Joe muchly. His talent keeps me captivated and he seems as charming as Shep from what I've heard. Just as witty and obviousy intelligent.

Well, I finally made it over to this thread. You guys are too much! Alas, I see my timing is totally off since I seem to have missed the repeats of all of Joe's other work.



One of my fave moments to show that Joe never forgets to be IN the scene and IN the moment. In HOME when everyone is talking around him, Rodney is going on about what he'd have to do to the gate or whatever. And Sheppard is calculating the years it would take to go and rescue ROdney in the Jumper. Watch Joe's/Shep's face. You can tell he's calculating in his head and in that moment has detached himself from the conversation. Then he jumps back in with the answer. It's priceless.
What was so funny to me is that when they showed that shot of Sheppard staring off into space, I knew immediately he was calculating something.

That scene was great for Sheppard/McKay banter. Because McKay knew from Rising that Sheppard could calculate those numbers, I loved how there was no stunned reaction from McKay like the first time Sheppard came up with a calculation. When Sheppard tells McKay it would take them 840 years to get him by Puddle Jumper, McKay just comes back with "But you would do that, right?"



Or in HOME when his DEAD buddies show up. His reactions when he opens the door and after he lets them in are superb.
If I had to pick a scene that really made Sheppard's character "real" for me, it would be that moment in "Home" after he lets his buddies in and he closes the door and leans back against it. The pain and sorrow in his eyes was so real. Although I didn't know at the time that these two people were dead, I knew that there was an incredible sadness associated with them. Thank goodness there was a commercial break after that scene, because it literally took my breath away and I needed some time to process what I saw.

Very true. An excellent actor. Such subtlety after so little time--a testament to his talent I think!

It is the little moments that are hard to sell. Those are the moments alot of actors don't Get. Joe never misses them. He just does so much. Even when he's not the focus of a scene he never looks like he's board or doing his grocery list. He's THERE and supporting whoever is in the scene. He could pull off a scene with an inanimate object but at the same time he's a GIVER with other actors . Giving them stuff to work off of.

What got me about the PAIN in 38 is all the way through he showed Pain and Fear without forgetting .In some shows with that kind of scenario, the actors seem to forget they're supposed to be in pain. Not Joe.

I love how he uses his voice and his facial expressions and his body language.

He's a very graceful guy. Graceful stride even. But I love how in Rising when Teyla was taking him to the caves. She goes down the incline with grace. He stumbles and catches himself. It was a SHEP moment. Just a little thing but perfect.

Joe is just a joy to watch. And it really does feel like he's been SHEP for years. Not just for ten eps.

I was thinking the same thing the other day...I was thinking blue or a blueish-grey. Cuz of this cap i found from "Birds of Prey" But he seems to have the kind of eyes that change depending on what he's wearing. Which makes his eyes so much more mesmerizing to look at. ;)

Well, you made me pull out my cast photos and photo loupe. And look up "eye color" on the Internet, where I got a good dose of genetics.

When I look at Joe's eyes in my different photos, they have a kind of steel gray base with a brown overlay and a darker brown inner ring around the pupil. Here's (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/s1/graphics/108_22.shtml) the best example I've found on GateWorld. It's from the episode "Underground".

Torri's eyes, who for some reason I thought were blue grayish, actually photograph like Joe's eyes, but with a more even cast. For example, in this photo (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/graphics/weir02.shtml) her eyes look to be bluish but with a brownish cast to them. I wonder if her eyes are considered green?

David's (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/graphics/mckay02.shtml) and Paul's (http://www.gateworld.net/atlantis/graphics/beckett01.shtml) eyes are definitely blue, both in my photos and online. But because in this GateWorld photo David was wearing a darker uniform than Paul, David's eyes look darker, which may not be the case in real life.

Yes, this. Sometimes I see actors who 'fall out' of a scene, especially when they're in the background and not the focus of the scene right then, but Joe's completely there and in the moment the entire time.

It sure does seem like it, and I read the following on one web-site:

And I read up some more on the 'hazel' definition too, and they're usually flecked with green or grey. I'm gonna go ahead and say, for now, that his eyes are hazel. :D
