BC's film and TV industry booming despite strong dollar

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) - Those signs pointing you toward film sets in Vancouver seem like they're everywhere this September. This is shaping up to be one of the strongest years in a long time for the local film industry, with more than 40 projects currently shooting around town. When the Canadian dollar began climbing, and then soaring, there was real concern it would devastate the Vancouver film and TV industry.

A change in tax credits provided a big boost, but Don Ramsden with the BC Council of Film Unions says the current state of health is thanks to a continuing shift away from reality shows to episodic television. Ramsden says with shows like 'Smallville,' 'Stargate' and the new show 'Men in Trees' we have more domestic product than ever before.

Generating projects that can be cast, shot, and edited locally means our industry isn't as reliant on American productions heading north and changes in the exchange rate. He says Vancouver has also unintentionally benefitted from Hurricane Katrina, since two years ago New Orleans was starting to become a really big competitor. Ramsden says we may still be in the toddler years, but the changes show Vancouver's film scene is maturing.
