Gateways to Fantasy
On SG-1 and Atlantis, adventure wears a grin

What the various Law & Order shows are to NBC, USA Network and TNT, the Stargate franchise is to Sci Fi Channel. It's almost that ubiquitous and certainly as durable.

Currently in its eighth season, Stargate SG-1 clearly has legs — and now it has an offshoot, with spin-off Stargate Atlantis premiering a month ago to robust ratings. Airing back-to-back, these galaxy-hopping adventures provide solid entertainment with a welcome dash of irreverent fun.

SG-1 star Richard Dean Anderson has been in top form lately as newly promoted Gen. Jack O'Neill, chafing in his unwanted role of higher authority while losing none of his sardonic attitude. Recently confronted by an alien enemy who bellowed, "You dare mock me?" O'Neill calmly countered, "You should know... of course I dare mock you."

That spirit of ironic detachment is at play on Atlantis in space cowboy John Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), the sort of wise guy who tells Freddy and Jason horror stories to kids at bedtime. There's also an amusing astrophysicist (David Hewlett) who tends to babble during moments of peril: "I react to certain doom in a certain way," he explains.

While SG-1 still uses Earth as home base, the explorers of Atlantis have taken a one-way leap to the far-off Pegasus galaxy, home of the lost city of legend. The displaced heroes have spent the first episodes familiarizing themselves with strange technology and fending off attacks from fearsome marauders known as the Wraith.

It's a promising start, helping turn Fridays into a destination for sci-fi fans.
