Does anyone know when season 7 of SG-1 will be coming out on DVD?

In the UK I think it's june, however, in Canada i haven't a clue. We tend to get them before the US for some reason. Most likely because we release them as single volumes before shoving them in a box.

Shove them in a box! lmao. That is really funny, I don't know if that was your intension but it was funny. I don't know why they realese them in the UK first either. Weird though, it's filmed here in Canada but they are only showing season six here. Who knows when the'll get around to season 7. I just hope I can get my hands on the boxed set first.

I think they get released in the UK first because of the high-popularity ratio.

I think they get released in the UK first because of the high-popularity ratio.

I think one factor also is because money can still be made in Syndication in the United States for a show like SG-1.

Damnit! Release it in the US! I want to buy the boxed set. I'm thinking of buying the individual volumes from the UK, but then I won't have a matching "box" for the first 6 seasons I already own. :/

Region Encoding? hah. Not a problem.

Seriously... I've searched the net for a possible release date in the US, but came up empty handed. Is there really no information on the release date? Anyone?

June 28th in the U.K. Same day as the last single release of Season 7.

It is very infuriating. U.S. has never had the Richard Dean Anderson video diary. :(

You might get on the mailing list of tvshowsondvd.com – they will even email you with updates. That way, you'll know as soon as anyone when they're due to be released in the States.

To a certain degree they do, but mostly they just switch them around. The extras on season one in R1, for instance, are on season three in R2. It can be kind of confusing to keep track of what extras go where...

That just doesn't make sense... Why can't they just make them all the same?

I so agree with you BCM... I was picking my jaw up off the floor when I heard there might be *other* stuff on the DVDs that I was not seeing.....was still irking me until I read this thread....if it is true that it REALLY is ALL there just switched around...then I think I will be okay........maybe I should put this sad addiction in the thread of..."You know you are Hooked when......" :D

Now that would really tick me off, unless they also made those extras available as a separate package for all the folks who bought the box sets or individual discs as ther were released.

Same Here! It wouldbe great if they would release a special DVD with loads of deleted scenes (the kiss in BtS etc) and bloopers! It would be so much fun!!!
It wouldbe stupid if they did add them on with the Episode DVD's cause everybody will have already brought themin separate box sets or discs :S

So if any of you big wigs at MGM are reading this....."release season seven in the US and Canada now". :S

Perhaps a "MGM: Release Season 7 Boxed Set in the U.S. and Canada! NOW!" petition, or initiative should be created. I would sign up in a heart beat.

Of course, realistically, before they release a boxed set, they will release each individual DVD so they can rake in some extra cash on the truly helplessly addicted.

I would be happy just knowing WHEN I can get the region 1 encoded boxed set for season 7. I am tempted to purchase the Region 2 encoded UK DVD boxed set, but fear that I will end up with redundant "special features."

This is also one of the reasons they mix up special features and what not, if you ask me. Further more, the whole reason for region encoding ... to help maintain the local markets that DVDs are released in.

I think your right, all they really want to do is rake in all the dough from us stargateaholics. I won't however buy the UK version of the DVD, that's way to much cash. Then on top of that you have to pay for shipping and GOD only knows how long that will take. Maybe we should start a petition. I wonder how would we be able to make that happen and who would we send it to for that matter?

Nah... With the previous box sets, they released the box first and individual volumes afterwards. The only exception, I think, was the first two discs of season one.

Of course, for region 2 it's the other way around... :(

Thanks! That's good to know.

I honestly doubt that starting a petition would get MGM to release the season 7 boxed set any earlier in the US and Canada. For that matter, we don't even know _when_ the planned release is.

I will look into this further, and see if I can come up with any additional information.

They did that with Star Trek: TNG in a mega-box set in the shape of a borg cube.

It was Region 2. :S

Anyways, I bought season 2 seperately and ended up saving ten dollars (The Boxed set was over $60, and each seperate dvd was only $10) And Season 5, I believe, was only a little over $50, which was cheaper than any other season. I never got that.

Your best bets to buy from the marketplaces on amazon.co.uk mate, I got Season 5 on there brand new for 42 quid + 2 quid p+p, thats over a tenner cheaper than I would've payed in MVC/HMV etc.

Also whats all this about Star Trek: TNG in a Borg cube. I'd quite like to get my hands on that.

I talked with Michael Shanks recently and informed him regarding Joe Mallozzi's plans to hopefully release an SG-1 commemorative DVD when the series finally does end. Shanks had not heard of this plan prior, and shook his head when I mentioned adding bloopers to the arsenal of extras. "That isn't a good idea," said Shanks.

Why not?

"Outtakes are material that didn't make it to the screen for a reason - they're mess-ups. MGM generally does not like releasing that kind of material. That's why scenes such as Tapping with O'Neill in Solitudes are so rare."

Of course this isn't word-for-word, but that was his gist. :S

I hope he's wrong, but then again, Shanks is rarely wrong.

Seems Michael Shanks shares Brad Wrights views on bloopers, then...

So few shows have grappled onto the concept of releasing bloopers. I think it's a market waiting to be tapped, a lot like Passion of the Christ, but so few of the big companies are willing to sink their teeth into them.

Yeah, Michael didn't think it was going to happen, and didn't seem to particularly care either way, but we might one day get our wish.

It seems to me that people, including TPTB, sometimes forget that there are bloopers and there are bloopers. Of course it's embarrassing for an actor when everyone gets to see him/her never knowing their lines, falling asleep on set or running into walls because they didn't pay attention or whatever. But these bloopers are also not funny and not something I would want to see.
There are tons of other bloopers though, after all even actors are only human and do make mistakes occasionally - stuff we fans can laugh about with them not about them! And then there's the teasing and the pranks like Amanda's *rant* in Solitudes; surely they have enough of these kinds of bloopers to fill dozens of DVDs.

When I think of a collection of bloopers I don't expect to be shown scenes embarrassing for anyone, I expect to be shown events that made everyone on set laugh, evidence that the cast and crew were having fun while doing their job.

David
May 21st, 2004, 04:42 PM
Ultimately there's a difference between embarrassing to the individual, and embarrassing to the network. And I can kind-of understand it. Lemme help put it into perspective. I run a christian radio program, and one night we were broadcasting out to a state-wide fair. My boss was out next to the speakers drinking beer. He was halfway through a can when I began to do the evening prayer.

I got a phone call saying never to do that again.

I had embarrassed him. Made him look like a hipocrite. (Around here, drinking beer and being a person of faith don't go together, but that's another topic for another thread. Hopefully, you get my point.)

Now flip that around, where these suited execs are trying to present top-notch, well-directed material, and people wanting to see the mistakes. An embarrassment when you're in competition for good stuff. They're thinking their competition will be looking into this and saying, "wow, what sucky management."

In retrospect, it's not hard to figure out why they want to hush away the urge to see errors, be it pranks, bloopers, or running into walls.

We may think companies care what we think, but look at the music industry right now. Many are suing their customers for illegally downloading music. Obviously it's illegal, but they're willing to go through with it. Suing your customers is slowly changing from a non-sequitor.

Yeah that's exactly it Feli! Like a lot of behind the scenes stuff we've been shown on the DVDs - you can see 'in the background' things happening in a scene and all the actors have fallen about laughing, but a lot of the time someone has been talking over this and we have missed out on what actually happened. These are the things that I would love to see. For example, the times when Rick ad libs and they feel it isn't right to keep in, but is incredibly funny anyway - I'd love to see those moments.

Apart from having different region code dvds, there are also differences between the German and the UK boxes - the German boxes are these incredible expensive stupid limited silver things where the glue always comes off after two weeks (extremely annoying - I only got one of them, the others are either US or UK boxes, and the German box keeps falling apart... :S ), and they cost around €100 - which is what, $120??? They have a completely different release date than, e.g., the UK ones. I prefer to wait for the UK box, though...or at least the US one.

Evidently, the double episodes on the single release dvd's are split between two disks, even if it means putting in the ep that actually comes after the double ep. (that is, except for the season premiers).

and, including postage and handling, it's less than £30. Which means that its just under $80 Aust.

which is only $5 more than what I payed using EasyDVD.com.au for the first 3 box sets that i've bought.

luckily the region 2 encoding is compatible with region 4. go Great Britain!

Tip: http://www.avides.com/start.php

It's a German site but you can order all the British (and German) DVDs for little money (watch out for special offers). Sometimes they have the individual DVDs for 10EUR, and the last special offer had the German box sets for about 60EUR. I got many of my DVDs there.

Since I thought about getting the UK S7 box from play.com (until I found out about the new date  ): Did you ever have to pay taxes (like 16%) for those DVDs? I heard that amazon.co.uk didn't have any taxes for EU countries, but since play.com is apparently not European...

Oh, the few bucks for shipping wouldn't be the problem. But it's always nice ;) when you're getting a "present" parcel from out of your country and the first thing you have to do is pay 20EUR to the customs office to get it. I think I heard on a German board a few years ago that they were charged for ordering from play.com. I just wanted to make sure that either my memory is wrong or that the customs deal has changed (I had missed the "including postage" bit from Iskandra's post, so never mind :) ).

Well, play.com is on Jersey, the Channel Island, which is technically part of Britain and Europe, but customs sometimes sees it differently...I never had to pay anything, and play.com always sends multiple dvd orders as multiple parcels to avoid any hassle with customs. I recently ordered three Straget box sets during the same week and didn't have to pay any customs fees. But maybe I was just lucky.

I ordered seasons 4,5 and 6 all at the same time and they were also posted individually. As for paying customs charges, I know it's only if an individual item costs over a certain amount - I'm not exactly sure, but I think with DVD's it's something like £19.98 - and even then it seems to be pretty hit and miss. I've had friends who've paid customs charges and then others who haven't - go figure!!:) I guess it depends how bothered your local post/sorting office is about these things.

It now seems that S7 is being released on 19th October (Region 1) anyway, but no mention of R2 yet. I'm hoping that we get 'The Lowdown' as a featurette like the S6 box set, so maybe it will be just a little bit longer.....

But please...not the 21st March NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!!

But 'The Lowdown' was on the Season 6 boxset, the only extras on the Season 7 DVDs is an Atlantis preview. The boxset is literally just the single DVDs put together - so I am still baffled as to the delay!!!

Call me a cynic but i feel the delay is simply so that MGM can make more cash. they want as many people as possible to buy the dvd's individually. i for one was friggin annoyed waiting a good 2 months looking forward to getting up, taking a stroll to town and picking up the box set on the 28th June. but no instead i contented myself with vol 36 at 14.99 as i am not waiting a further 9 months, so i will buy them gradually over the next month or so. MGM you win, you get your extra cash. boo sucks to you and your stupid lion.

I agree. The only single DVD's I have purchased is the Lost City ones because of the preview of Atlantis. I only buy the DVD's in sets because it works out a lot cheaper

For us Region 1 people, check out deepdiscountdvd.com. They take a while to ship sometimes (though I have gotten several DVDs before the street date, so they don't always ship slow), but the SG-1 DVDs have usually been 45.76. I have ordered all 6 seasons from them becuase it's free shipping, I trust them, and it's cheap.

Can't wait for Season 7 DVDs here.

No, not calling you a cynic at all! I feel exactly the same and its the reason I havent given in yet and gone and bought them individually. Thankfully I have my VHS tapes to fall back on (though how much longer they'll last!!)

Luckily, I was given a link for the Atlantis Preview (and although its not the best quality) I have seen that!

So that is what 63 dollars Canadian? I think I may just pick the boxset up at Futureshop the day of release. They usually sell the new ones for 57.99 CDN, that's how much I paid for Season Six.

There's a couple of extra features in it, etc. I could be wrong though.

I owned the first volume of SG-1 on DVD (COTG, TEW, Emancipation) before they started running boxed sets, and the cover art was different, but the content was the same.

In fact, I wish they continued the shimmering stargate in the other volumes, but Vol 1 is the only one that has it. :(

AgentX
July 7th, 2004, 03:27 PM
Isn't the gate shimmering in Volume 4 as well? Just that it's red because that's the colour of the volume?

Personally I prefer Volume 3's cover art. But they could package Season 7 in Tinfoil and I'd still happily buy it.

David
July 7th, 2004, 03:29 PM
I'm sorry, perhaps I didn't articulate my thought as much. In the first volume of the entire series, the gate is actually animated, shimmering behind the text of the episode titles, with a track of digital beeps and various noises. No other volume (in region one) has it. :(

Ohh.. I see now, that would be cool and disappointing that they discontinued it. Seriously it can't have that much of an effect on the space on the DVD.

David
July 7th, 2004, 03:41 PM
That's one of those things I'd love to find out one of these days, just how much space is left on these DVDs? What are their options in expanding or compressing the video? does every byte count? Does one video quality setting vary hundreds of megabytes from the next, or can they take it to the edge?

Jafana
July 7th, 2004, 06:04 PM
It might very well be different for the region one dvd's because I'm fairly certain - for at least season two and three anyway - the individual volumes are different to the box sets.

SaharaGate, before she owned the box set, had the single volumes (admittedly region 2) and they had quite sneakily broken up the mid season double episodes onto separate disks - and while that would seem ok, if that was the extent to their sneakiness, they had actually done that by inserting a non consecutive episode between them, to ensure that there were four eps on each disk.

the box sets don't do that. which to me seems like they're different disks altogether.
again though, it might be different for the later seasons.

David

Continuity in the disks is as important as continuity on the shows! Having 708, then 711 just ain't good!

The region 1 release is different from the region 2 release, both box and individual volumes. When I said the individuals were identical to the box sets, I meant within the same region only.

Ah, you're referring to the DVD menus, aren't you? Well, then it might comfort you to know that every one of the DVDs have animated menus in region 2. :p

I checked the season 1 / volume 2 DVD (region 1 version) and it contains 7.16 GB of data. Plenty of space left there for some fancy menu animation.

What are their options in expanding or compressing the video? does every byte count? Does one video quality setting vary hundreds of megabytes from the next, or can they take it to the edge?
I'm no expert on video encoding, but I'm fairly certain they can "take it to the edge", as you say, should they want to do so.

I took a bunch of screenshots from the menus of seasons 3 - 7 (cause seasons 1 and 2 are pretty much identical to region 1's volume 1 menu) and made a zip archive. I think I went a bit overboard though, as the file turned out to be 5.2 MB (dispite the image files being compressed as heck)! Obviously too big to attach to a message on the forum. :)

Would it be okay if I sent it to ya over e-mail or something instead?
