'Waltons' actress treasures time on show

GALVESTON — Nobody on the show ate worms and beetles or bungee-jumped into a pool of sharks. But “The Waltons,” that family-oriented, nostalgia-laden and hugely popular television franchise, was in essence its own kind of reality TV program.
That was the recurring theme during a conversation in a Galveston hotel restaurant with Judy Norton, known to her legion of fans as spunky, rebellious Mary Ellen, one of the most popular of the seven Walton siblings.
The 48-year-old actress, who is in town to direct a new musical being performed this month at Moody Gardens Convention Center, was 13 when “The Waltons” — starring Richard Thomas as John Boy — debuted on CBS in the fall of 1972. She was 23 when the show’s final season aired in 1981.

In Vancouver in the late 1990s, she did some guest spots on popular TV shows being filmed in Canada, such as “Millenium” and “Stargate SG-1,” in which little Mary Ellen portrayed a tattooed alien whose planet was under attack [In the Line of Duty].
