SEASON PREMIERES. Sci Fi serves up a 10th season of "Stargate SG-1" (Friday at 9 p.m., Sci Fi), making it, the cable net proclaims, the longest-running sci-fi drama ever on American TV. Claudia Black joins the regular cast. It's followed by the third-season premiere of "Stargate Atlantis" (Friday at 10 p.m., Sci Fi). Multimedia goodies at www.scifi.com/stargate.

Or as Brad Wright was quoted as saying: "The longest running COLOR scifi series."

      What to watch this week

      **general snippage**

      FRIDAY

Here’s a show the new head of Showtime wishes he still had: “Stargate SG-1,” which returns for its 10th season at 8 p.m. on the Sci Fi Channel. For its first five years on the air, “Stargate” aired on Showtime, but the pay cabler gave up on it so that it could concentrate on creating exciting new shows like … umm, give us a minute, we’ll think of one. Also returning is spin-off “Stargate Atlantis” for its third season at 9 p.m. As in previous years, there will be crossover plots between the two “Stargates.” I hear that a third “Stargate” is in the works; unlike Showtime, Sci Fi apparently knows when it has a good thing.

        OTHER BETS:

        **snippity doo-dah**

FRIDAY: It's a big night for sci-fi buffs as new seasons of "Stargate SG-1" and "Stargate Atlantis" get under way. For its 10th campaign, "SG-1" adds Claudia Black to the regular cast. She plays Vala, a "sexually charged and ethically challenged" thief-of-all-trades. Trust us, we don't make this stuff up. 9 and 10 p.m., Sci-Fi Channel.

          ahhh! His loss! *OUR* gain!!

Most of my family couldn't afford the extra PAY channel of Showtime; and gloriously happy Sci-Fi got added to basic cable in this region, and more so that Sci-Fi picked up the entire series! Now, syndication - standard non-cable channels are also finally enjoying it, even if the eps are a bit behind by a season or more.

Stargate was one of those shows I thought might be interesting, but had to wait until it showed up on a channel that was more accessible at a viewing price our family could afford.

Unfortunately, rumors have it that Sci-Fi is going digital soon... digital TV is the future and that means getting a converter box or new TV just to watch, when various programs switch over to the new digital systems.

I was told TWO YEARS ago scifi was going digital. It's nothing but a scam to force cable viewers to pay for the high-end digital package. They want to get rid of the others so they can gouge the subscribers.

And what really stinks is that the reception was good initially, then it went downhill. It ONLY got better once DR WHO hit the air, which makes me think a lot of WHO viewers complained.

In the "What to Watch Section": (Grade B given)

              Spoiler:

              Stargate Atlantis
In last season's cliff-hanger finale, the Atlantis team discovered that a carefully negotiated alliance with their mortal enemies was a sham (A bit of advice: Never make deals with ugly space vampires. Who speak in raspy voices. While roaming the corridors of their dimly lit ships. And who live in mass colonies they call "hives".) Season 3 opens (SG-1 premieres at 9PM) with the Wraiths headed for Earth. Ordinarily, we'd assume the invasion would be turned away. But then, things don't always go well for Atlantis, do they? Grade: B --Wook Kim

The Day the Earth Stood Still (AMC) 8:00pm

Few people have seen the classic sci-fi movie that inspired the phrase “Klatuu Barada Nikto.” Make sure you’re one of the ones that have. The film recently made AFI’s top 100 inspirational movies list and it’s amazing how it’s still very topical for our political system 55 years after it came out.

                ”Stargate Atlantis” (Sci-Fi) 10:00pm

I’m not into the “Stargate” shows, but the third season of “Atlantis” starts. If you’re home on a Friday night and just finished watching The Day the Earth Stood Still it seems like the perfect follow up. Otherwise you might have to leave the house and go see Little Man. What could “Stargate: Atlantis” do that’s worse than that?

Sometimes I can still hardly believe it's been 10 years already of SG-1. What a great way to spend a decade IMO.
