    TV booming despite soaring dollar

A total of 13 series are under production in British Columbia

    Marke Andrews, Vancouver Sun
    Published: Thursday, May 11, 2006

Despite a Canadian dollar almost 11 cents higher against the U.S. dollar than it was one year ago, television production in the province is booming.

The B.C. Film Commission lists 13 registered series, compared to just six series and one miniseries underway in early May 2005. There are also five movies of the week in production, compared to just one and a pilot last May.

The series include mainstays Stargate SG-1, in its 10th year, Stargate Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica and The 4400, all shooting third seasons, and Robson Arms and Masters of Horror, each in season two.

Oddly enough, the trade paper PLAYBACK contradicts this article to a degree with two articles

    Production flat in '05
Broadcasters looking for cheaper programming, along with resurgence in feature film production, helped offset dips in other areas to keep spending on independent Canadian film and TV production in 2005 on par with that of the previous year, according to Playback's 18th Annual Report on Independent Production.

    Loonie threatens summer shooting
Industry watchers are warning that Hollywood service work could be cut short this summer because of the high loonie - now trading at a 28-year high of 91 cents against the U.S. dollar - even as what looks to be a busy season of would-be blockbusters gets underway at studios in B.C. and Ontario.

(This article is more about films than TV shows, which are sort of, um, embedded?)

Nope The original article is pushing that Vancouver has stable TV production, but overall, if the dollar/loonie levels out, US productions may find it easier to just stay at home than cross the border. No more Vancouver/Toronto subbing for NYC
