Broadband Not Fiction for Sci Fi

    By R. Thomas Umstead 4/27/2006 11:37:00 AM

Sci Fi Channel will launch originally produced “Webisodes” of existing shows such as Battlestar Galactica, as well as Internet-exclusive fare, as part of its new “Sci Fi Pulse” broadband channel launching May 8, according to network officials.

The broadband service, available through Sci Fi’s Web site (www.scifi.com), is part of the network’s upfront pitch to advertisers that also includes an overall ambitious slate of original programming created for the linear channel that will bow later this year, president Bonnie Hammer said.

Sci Fi Pulse will launch with full-length episodes from such shows as Galactica and upcoming original series Eureka, as well as full-length uncut Sci Fi original movies. Eventually, the site will offer original Webisode spinoffs of Galactica and other Sci Fi series, as well as Web-exclusive series, executive vice president and general manager David Howe said.

    **snippity doo-dah**

As for original programming, the network will develop several new series over the next year, according to Howe, who added that Sci Fi hopes to have seven scripted drama series on the air by early 2007: incumbents Galactica, Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis; Eureka, set to launch this summer; and three more that have yet to be determined.

Too bad the Stargates aren't mentioned in the webisodes.

Lots more detail can be found on Scifi's Press Releases, posted over at Futoncritic... however, Stargate SG1 (or SGA) seems to be absent when it comes to anything new, alas

From the article excerpt I posted:

"Eventually, the site will offer original Webisode spinoffs of Galactica and other Sci Fi series..."

Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis quality as "other SciFi series" -- I'm hoping that SciFi Channel agrees and that they will be available in the near future.

And I've written my (polite) e-mail requesting that they do.

I thknk the reason Stargate isn't included is becasue they are not owned (or produced) by NBC Universal, I think.

Stargate Atlantis rose from 'end' of SG-1

          by Ilona Beiks
          page 30

Stargate Atlantis launched into the sci-fi stratosphere in July 2004, premiering on the Sci Fi Channel to nearly 4.2 million viewers - the first sci-fi series ever to surpass the four-million-viewer plateau.

True to sci-fi protocol, Atlantis, spun off from the wildly popular Stargate SG-1, began with an ending.

          **brigadier general snippage**

Stargate Atlantis is distributed by MGM Worldwide Television Distribution, and is currently shooting its third season at The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, B.C. Season three airs in July on the Sci Fi Channel.

            Stargate SG-1: 200 Episodes

North American casters rejoice in series' success

            by Cheryl Binning
            page 29

As Stargate SG-1 rolls on its 10th season, even the head of programming at its U.S. broadcaster is surprised at the series' continued success.

"Every year we keep thinking this is the last year," says Mark Stern, exec VP, original programming at cable outlet Sci Fi Channel, which took over the series from Showtime after season five. "The sixth year we were sure was the end, then the seventh and eighth, so now we have all basically given up trying to guess."

And once the series hits the 202-episode mark, it will eclipse The X-Files (which was also lensed in B.C.) to become the longest-running sci-fi series in North America.

Yes, they're all one big happy family... Sony, MGM, Universal, Scifi....

They may not have included SG as quite frankly, there's a budget to consider, and well, BSG is the *hot* scifi show right now.

B.C. post shops create series' alien worlds

At 200 episodes and counting, Stargate SG-1 isn't just a sci-fi institution - it's also helped provide a foundation for the burgeoning Vancouver post and FX industry. Over the last 10 years, several Vancouver post houses have been able to flex their creative chops and grow their businesses on MGM Television's flagship series, along with its Stargate Atlantis spin-off.

"Stargate is one of the biggest employers in the Vancouver market," confirms Andrew Karr, in-house digital director for Atmosphere Visual Effects, which works on both franchise titles. "It's certainly been good for our business. Today, I would estimate that a good 30% to 40% of our business comes from both Stargate series."

                  Stargate SG-1: 200 Episodes

                  Sci-fi series a boon for B.C.

                  page 28

It's official: Stargate SG-1 rules the earthly television universe.

Embarking on a record-breaking 10th season of production, the B.C.-shot TV series has entered uncharted territory, laying claim as the longest-running drama series ever produced for cable television, and the longest-running North American science fiction drama of all time, outlasting The X-Files, The Twilight Zone and every installment of Star Trek.

"This is a big deal - a really big deal - and everyone in Vancouver knows it," says Jeanie Bradley, executive VP, current programming at Sony Pictures Television, who flew up from L.A. with MGM and Sci Fi Channel execs to celebrate the shooting of the 200th episode with cast, crew and media on the Stargate SG-1 set at The Bridge Studios in Burnaby, BC.

In the May 1st issue of Playback, there are several about Stargate and it's 200th episode. You may need to sign up for free to view the articles after visiting for a while. It is even better if you can find a copy of the issue, for their are pictures and congrats from various Canadian production companies.
