Why can't we vote for the same characters twice?

See the discussion here (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=27736&page=7), beginning at post #129.

The existing rules is a compromise between the old rules and the proposed new rule to only allow two votes for two separate characters. This way, you can still affect the vote by more or less, because you're effectively casting three votes, since the first vote is worth two points. The entire purpose of the new game, though, is to disallow people voting for the same person in both sets of votes... since that is problematic, to say the least.

For those who are still having trouble understanding the new rules, see the headings over my set of votes above. This is probably the best indication of how the new rules work.

What are you going to do about votes for a character not in the comp or stuff like this : "Hurt: Dont care." In other games they are invalid votes and don't count.

Yeah, I really like it when people make sweeping generalizations like that. Totally helps to bridge the gap between fanbases. And it's DEFINITELY not an attempt to place blame or anything. And it CERTAINLY couldn't be flipped or anything.

And I'm not delusional enough to think that Sam's odds would be this great anywhere else - certainly not any place where certain other characters would reign. ;)

For the record, I don't hate fictitious characters. I find it a waste of a perfectly horrible emotion. But whatever. :ford:

Could we please lose the hate stuff. :) This game is where you vote out your least favourite characters first, all that means is that they are your least favourite not that you hate them. I'd really not like the mods to have to come in here and moderate a GAME.

OK who will I like out next? Gerak (he turned darkside) or Anubis? I'll ponder it for a while and be back in a few, with my Day 3 vote.

Hey Lida! Great to see you here :)
The rules are simple (and they are on the page 1 of this thread), you can vote twice a day, and in the first round both votes (heal and hurt) are 2 points worth. In the second round each vote is 1 point worth.
One thing more, voting for the same characters in both rounds is not allowed.

My strategy for voting is to vote against (hurt) the characters I don't like and to vote for characters I do like that are about to get eliminated. I like Sam, Jack, and Daniel but they are in no danger of getting eliminated so I'll use my votes elsewhere. And while I'm not a huge fan of Vala there are alot more characters that should be gone before her.

thats a bit unfair IMO. i know that you wouldn't do this, but in this situation if someone were to consistantly vote for a character that the game runner didn't want to receive that vote, one way or the other, it would be easy to use that as an excuse.

isn't there a way around this?

I put this person on Ignore long time ago. The answer is negative.

As a self-appointed runner of voting games that are open to everyone on the forum, you can't discriminate against that person and their vote, no matter what happened in the past. It's very unethical to do so, even if you ensure to state it in your first post from the beginning of the game.

You can't let the game go on for five days and then announce that you won't count that person's vote, when they didn't have any warning before they posted. And, again, past differences do not make it right for you to disregard their vote in the first place.

I'm sorry FH, but if you don't count that person's vote, I'm going to have to take it to a moderator. I understand if you've had a bad history with that person, but when you elect to do these sorts of things, all past history and bad experiences need to be checked at the door.

I put this person on Ignore long time ago. The answer is negative.
perhaps you could tell someone you trust who that person is if you don't want to reveal the name, and they could tell you the vote? i don't know how this stuff works, cos i don't have anyone on ignore, but if its a game thats supposed to be open to the entire board it seems a bit unfair on this person that they can't vote because the person tallying the votes doesn't like them.

i don't mean to cause a big fuss or anything, i just don't think its fair. i don't know why you've ignored this person, but should it come into this? i'd have to consider the validity of the game if not everyone is entitled to vote.

sorry. just my humble opinion. i'm often wrong. :o

Nope. It used to cost me too much frustration and real tears some time ago. The answer is still negative. Do with it what you want.

I don't want to do it, but it needs to be done. When you choose to do create these threads, you choose to run a game smoothly and democratically without allowing past issues, experiences or biases get in the way of how you deal with the voters. That's the way your predecessors have handled these games, and that's the way you should handle yours. I'm not expecting you to adhere to a standard that isn't applicable to anyone else.

For the sake of your sanity - and for the sake of compromise - couldn't you do what stargate barbie suggested, or simply take them off your ignore list while you're working in the capacity of one who is counting votes? You can always put them back on when it's all over, right?

Just wondering. I won't be on for the rest of the day most likely. But I hope you make the right decision here. Disregarding votes because of your relationship with voter(s) isn't the right decision at all.

Y'know what? It isn't that big a deal. If she wants to ignore me, let her. Undoubtedly the fact that I "healed" the person she "hurt" and "hurt" a character she loves also plays into it. I can't help the characters I love and hate any more than she can. The difference is, I can at least keep some perspective on it. ;) I'll let my post(s) stand so it won't cause later confusion, but I'll withdraw from the game.

Carry on. ;)

yes but it is still just a game, and bringing personal biases against posters isn't right, nor is it fair. you don't care, and thats fine. it is just a game, but where does a line get drawn?

this game has already been restarted because people were unhappy that certain fans were consistantly voting for their favourite character. there have been accusations of hate in relation to a certain fan group. as it stands, if these trends continue, and given your unfair treatment, i think i'll probably withdraw from the game too, considering that it's clearly so inconsistant and preferencial in terms of those allowed to vote.

what if the person running the game had a personal bias against one particular fan group, and had each of them on ignore? its a total sham if this is how the game is run.

a solution to the problem has been offered in which you don't have to be taken off ignore in order to vote, and it has been rejected. i don't care what your issues are between one another, i know that there are issues among many GW members, but i don't see the point in holding a grudge to this extent.

sorry for going so off topic here. i just felt that it was important to have my opinion on fairness and bias expressed.

I had been voting (maybe not so often though, and i've already deleted my votes from today), but what's the use of voting if the person who counts the votes decides which votes count and which don't. So we all know which characters are going to win or lose, these "hurt or heal" games are being forged, plain and simple.

It is simple to view only the posts of a perosn on ignore that you wnat to view - you do not have to take that person off of ignore and you do not have to read any of their other posts - all you do is click on "view this post" see it, take the vote count and then there is a button to close the window and it goes right back to ignore - plain and simple it is not that hard. Since the posts here are only votes with no other statements you do not even have to read any opinions just votes.

well, yeah, but what if you just plain don't like the person voting and happen to have them on ignore? then it makes it fair and reasonable not to count their votes. just like in politics! :D

sorry this was very sarcastic, but you make a good point, i didn't know this about the ignore list. seems like the right thing to do in this case IMO, but i'm not the game runner here.

I think RealmOfX has a good idea in having a second person count the votes, then when there is a discrepency, we'll know which is the real count.
