Hello to all!

We have now completed stage1 of our server move from the old to new Database server cluster.

Please respond to this poll/thread letting us know if you've had any issues with the site at all since the move.

Cheers!

Edit: For reference, the forums have been on the new server for a period of 1 week.

I've noticed a great improvement the forums lately

my only issue is after i post a reply the forums seem to freeze for a few seconds and and the blue background turns white while it is loading up.

here's a example

and this one below this text i get this too once in a while

i've also seen a big improvemnt in how well firefox works on the forums it used to be very slow

I’d say they are more stable (I use Firefox) but as far as the speed goes, I can’t tell, since this past week I’ve been on dial-up but I regularly use a cable modem. Voted for the top choice anyway even though I can't tell if the forum is any faster.

As I said no real difference in load times for me but wasn't expecting there to be. ;)

I'm having the same issues when I am replying to a post. There is definitely a delay.
I'm also using Firefox, but I think that the pages load slightly slower for me, but nothing drastic.

For quite some time now (several weeks), I've had alot of trouble with the forum on my home computer (dial-up). I usually can get to the main page of the forum, but from there, I have to refresh two or three (or more) times before a page will come up. And posting replies is even worse. Even if those problems don't materialize, it is very, very slow in loading pages (sometimes I can't tell if it is going to load the page or if I need to refresh it). It is very frustrating....

Is that when it loads with the wee progress bar and then again and it just says "downloading <page>" and then just says "Done" despite no page being up? If it is, i get that sometimes as well. Only usually when i press "Refresh" though. I thought it was just my dial-up... hasn't happened as much recently though.

Yes, that's what I mean. For example, when replying to this post, it took over 30 seconds for the page to finally come up. I would say at least half the time, the page never does come up and I have refresh two or three times (total time to get to a new screen--probably one and a half to five minutes). I don't get very far in reading stuff on the forum, let alone responding to it, when I have to wait that long each time I try to do something. A lot of the time I just give up and wait until I'm at work or school. But I'm limited there by...well, work and school.

*sigh* Sorry for the incessant whining--it seems to be what I do best.:o

I have update all the plug ins and all the fancy doo dads (gee do I sound like O'Neill or what ;)) but not joy.

Your service provider's DNS registry may not be updated to reflect the new DNS. It takes a couple days for the new DNS to propagate throughout the internet. try this: Go to a search engine and enter "GateWorld". Usually the search engine DNS registries are updated pretty quick, so try to get to gateworld through different search engines.

Try clearing your browser's cache and deleting all your cookies and temporary internet files. Just be sure to write down usernames and passwords before doing this! It's entirely possible that your browser is pointing to the DNS in it's cache, rather than the new DNS.

Smashing the computer comes to mind. :p

Well, you could contact your ISP and inform them that there has been a DNS change for a site you go to. You could ask them to see when the next DNS registry update will be, or whether one is in progress. Really, it's coming down to your ISP's DNS registry at this point. The DNs change occurred in the last day or so. Perhaps waiting another day, two at the most, will garner some results for you.

Try the following things

1) Open up command prompt (Start -> Run and type "cmd.exe") in Windows

When the black window comes up, type in "ipconfig /flushdns" without the "'s

2) Open up command prompt (as above)

Type in "nslookup forum.gateworld.net" (or gateworld.net if your having problems with that).

Post the results, they should be something like this

Z:\>nslookup forum.gateworld.net

Another thing to add to that...

Eachtime i use the quick reply, it brings me to the umm "long reply" (for lack of a better word) and says that i have to wait 10 seconds between my posts...funny thing is my last post could have been 5 - 10 min ago, but it still says it...
The forum is also extremely slow, some of the pages arent loading atall, i have to do a hard refresh every few min to get the pages to work

Finally but not least... While waiting for the last person to reply thread to load this

Warning: fsockopen() [function.fsockopen]: unable to connect to 127.0.0.1:25 (Connection refused) in /includes/class_mail.php on line 536

appeared at the top of the page, i disappeared so fast that i barely noticed it, i had to select and copy all of the page to get it because of the speed it was disapearing

Any chance i can vote again :P

I haven't had that error so far. It's strange, it looks as though something is trying to connect to port 25 (mail transport server) on your local loopback address. The connection will always be refused if there's currently no smtp server running on your PC.

I dunno why, but vBulletin must use port 25 for some kind of validation, like checking an member's email or the ISP domain they belong to.

As far as pages not loading, i really cannot see this. It sounds like a problem with your ISP, more than the forums, as they load blazingly fast for me, and im on wireless, and in Australia!

the one error i've encountered, earlier today, was making a post, usually with quick reply, and getting the 'this is a duplicate post' message

haven't seen it lately though, so maybe it's been fixed

Greg, there are also some reports in teh mod thread, but now that this one is open, i'll send folks over here

Greg, there are also some reports in teh mod thread, but now that this one is open, i'll send folks over here And because of that I'm posting my question here now. :)

UberSG-1Fan had to change her username, because it seems that the Umlaute can't be displayed properly any longer. I thought that this happened with the latest server glitch two days ago, and I assumed it would be ok again once the server problems are solved. But now I'm confused because of these posts:

I tried the umlaut, but unfortunately it's not working anymore. Regular U it is. Sorry!

I'm sorry but if its non english characters then i cant really help. Our server only supports the EN charset.

Does that mean it will stay this way from now on? Why? It worked perfectly before, can't it be repaired somehow? (Please excuse my technical nescience :o)

It's not only the username of one person that has changed, no, take a look at all the posts in the Sprechen sie Deutsch? (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=5742) thread, they are messed up completely because all the Umlaute and the character for the 'double s' don't work anymore. It looks as if we're all not able to write. :S
I like the German thread because it's funny and easy to talk about Stagate with fellow fans from Germany in our mother tongue. I understand that this is only one small OT thread among many, many others, but it would be so great if it worked correctly again. *pleads*

If it has to stay that way it looks now, should I post there and tell people that they'll have to use the more difficult way to write in German from now on?

Bye, A.

P.S. I just saw that the degree sign (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C2%B0) also doesn't work anymore.

What wait you can't use non english characters anymore?

testing... ?, ?, ??

Edit: No! Please please change it back to the way it was! People should be allowed to type in their own language if they want! :S :(

*sigh*

This isnt something out of choice, it is a limitation with our webserver, and our new hardware platform. We cannot resolve it until Apache release a stable version of Apache 2.1, which may be a while off.

Actually Sky it's not just "non-English" characters. The system is now inserting question marks for English characters too. Most of the time if I'm making a longer post I'll compose the post in Microsoft WORD & paste it into here. No problems until now. I just posted two very lengthy posts in Mala's World in Off-Topic and damn if they weren't full of question marks where my puncuation marks formerly were. (Leading to a hell of a lot of editing...)

And this very things was why I got myself a G-mail account... because Yahoo did the same thing to e-mails - even in e-mails to other Yahoo members - when things are composed in WORD and pasted in - certain characters - hypens, apostrophes, colons to name a few heavily used English punctuation marks come out as a goobledygook symbol. I've assumed it was because those symbols were trademarked by MS and that not all ISP's had agreements with them or used some other programming platform.

And quite frankly when typing up a loooong post, I *don't* like doing it all in the 'reply to thread box.' Too small, not user friendly when editing/formatting (the way WORD would be) and just trying to edit a long post in here isn't nice.... (And choosing "Plain Text" as a formatting style creates the question marks just like using the WORD default....)

So.... this unhappy camper just wanted to make Greg & everyone else it's not just 'non-English' characters. It now also seems like those of us who use WORD to compose/copy/paste are going to be S.O.L. too.

Sorry, but that isnt our server, or Yahoo's - but Microsoft Office's crappy codepage adaptation.

Each font uses different "pages" for different characters. The way MS Office handles some fonts, means that if you paste a whole page load of text in one font, into another app, it may become distorted and corrupted when it is pasted into a "UTF/system" font program like notepad, or a web browser.

As for the non-english (ISO-8859-1) characters, we are working on the issue, but as i said before, its boggling us and its still a WIP.

As for the speed issue, that has been fixed.

i know this is a pain, but try typing your posts in notepad or using wordpad. Often what gets translated to funky characters are things like smart quotes.

i've run into this issue posting fic.

I always turn off smart quotes in my word processors.

That is very wierd.

The IP Your ISP is reporting for the gateworld forums is correct - which doesnt make any sense as to why you cant acess it. What does your browser say when you try to access the forums?

Greg it just gives me the usual DNS error message.

I just don't understand it either.

On Firefox I have the usual timed out error message.

So what you are saying Greg is that the DNS is being pointed to is correct but the problem is that it keeps on displaying the error mesage?

Not sure if this is a server upgrade issue or not but since I am not a computer expert...

Up until Sunday I could access my smilies. Now when I click on a smilie or the "more" link to get other options, it goes no where. Stays on the message I am typing.

Smilies were working fine until this past Sunday. Have tried numerous times on different days. The disable smilies is unchecked.

Any suggestions or advice as to what the issue may be?

Someone suggested something to do with popups and I can check that out when I get back from my business trip.
