View Full Version : "Heal or hurt" SG-1 ONLY characters game

Formerhost

And to make it sligthly more "civilized", two votes per day only :)

26 characters from the show and each of them starts with 26 points. Once a character gets 0, is eliminated.

Samantha Carter 66 (+)
Dr Janet Frasier 40 (+)
Daniel Jackson 31 (+)
Teal'c 30 (+)
Thor 29 (+)
Walter Harriman 29 (+)
Jack O'Neill 29 (+)
Bra'tac 27 (+)
General George Hammond 27 (+)
Vala Mal Doran 26 (+/-)
Lionel Pendergast 26
Jacob/Selmac 26
Colonel Chekov 25 (-)
Sha're 25 (-)
Dr Carolyn Lam 25 (-)
Apophis 25 (-)
Kvasir 24 (-)
General Landry 23 (-)
Ba'al 23 (-)
Gerak 22 (-)
Martouf 21 (-)
Woolsey 19 (-)
Jonas Quinn 18 (-)
Cameron Mitchell 14 (-)
Anubis 14 (-)
Doci 11 (-)

OK everybody, the new game with the change of rules and slightly modified list of characters begins. Starting today the first round will be 2 points heal/hurt vote and the second round 1 point vote. Voting for the same characters in both rounds is not allowed.

Example:

Day 1 vote 1 (2 points)

Heal: Teal'c
Hurt: Apophis

Day 1 vote 2 (1 point)

Heal: Jack
Hurt: Doci

And the new game is HERE (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=27912)

Well, we really need Apophis, after all he was there and possibly the most important badguy on the show.

ok maybe i'm just really dumb or uncultured but i've never played this game before. however i think i get it...sort of. i mean it doesn't seem that hard but are there like any rules or do you just vote based on how you feel about a certain character that day? and then if you feel differently later you vote again hence the second vote? maybe i'm making it more difficult that it really is...

You just vote based on how you feel about certain character at the moment, or you heal your all time favourite character and hurt the character you don't like at all. And why twice a day? Hmm... good question :)

i'm gonna take a shot and say the + and - are to indicate if that person has had points added or taken away in the latest count, and the ones who have nothing have had no votes yet? and if there is a +/- then it means that they have had votes for both hurt and heal, but they even out?

just a guess though. i'm probably way off.

Sorry for not answering earlier, I was too busy solving Google's Da Vinci's puzzles :D

ParadoxRealities and stargate barbie answered your question correctly. As there is 26 characters in the game, 26 points is the start, so everything up is with + and everything down from 26 is with -. These who were higher or lower and returned back to 26 are with both +/-. Clear 26 means nobody heal or hurt these characters yet.

Formerhost, I was hoping it would be ok if I suggested a rule change?

I've noticed that there are a lot of people who are using both of their votes each round to heal or hurt the same character twice. This is leading to some of the results being skewed, particularly since it looks like this strategy is currently mostly being employed by Sam fans. Therefore, if one is, say, a Teal'c fan, and wants Teal'c to be in the lead, one has no choice but to vote to heal Teal'c twice, in the hopes of countering the people who are doing the same with Sam. Eventually, if this continues to be allowed, everybody will start using this technique, and only a handful of characters will end up receiving any votes at all (either heal or hurt) in each round.

The only way that I can see to stop this from happening is to disallow this strategy. That is, if a person casts two heal/hurt votes in each round, they should have to use them to heal two separate characters, and hurt two separate characters.

Anyway, just a suggestion. If I haven't thanked you yet, thanks for a great game idea! :)

:)we're making up for the lack of sam winning anything in s9 (think the fact that the thread's made by a vala fan has something to do with it too. nom, FH, but i think it intimidates people).

you make a good point (though i though I was countering the anti-sam votes), but how bout we can't make 2 exactly identical votes, i.e. i can heal bra'tac twice but have to hurt kinsey and simmons. or, i can hurt kinsey twice but have to heal woolsy and maybourne.

I've noticed it too and to tell the truth it makes ma angry a little bit. Especially that in an exactly the same game which just ended yesterday after slightly more than 24 hours run and everybody was allowed to vote multiple times, just not two times in the row, it was exactly the same strategy and the same heal/hurt votes by the same people. That's why I started this game to make it more "civilized".

ETA: A compromise might be to have two sets of votes in each round: one "Heal/Hurt 2 points" vote and one "Heal/Hurt 1 point" vote. These two votes would again have to be for separate people, but it would also allow people who are big fans of certain characters a chance to sway the vote their way, while still having a minor impact on other characters as well.

Too complicated. I like your first idea - heal two separate characters and hurt two separate characters - better. Or - only one vote per day. What about this idea?

This was an ETA in my last post, but then I reconsidered and figured it should get a separate post, because it took so long to write:

For example, in each round, instead of having Vote 1 and Vote 2, we could have something like the following:

Day 3, Vote 2 Points:
Heal Daniel
Hurt Anubis

Vote 1 Point:
Heal Teal'c
Hurt Lam

The "2 Points" vote would get two points added/subtracted, while the "1 Point" vote would get one point added/subtracted. And, again, voting on the same character in both votes would not be allowed. This would lead to a wider array of characters who are getting heal/hurt votes. It would give everybody equal opportunity to influence the votes, and it would feel a lot more fair than skewing the votes by voting on the same character twice.

One vote a day doesn't really fix the biggest problem - only a handful of characters getting any votes - though. It just makes it worse. Then we'll just have everybody voting on Sam, Daniel, and Jack.

The "2 points/1 point" rule sounds best to me personally, but the "2 votes/2 characters" rule is good too. Maybe it could go along with a change in the way the posts are done, like this (for example):

Day 3:
Heal: Daniel, Vala
Hurt: Anubis, Lam

If it's laid out like this, it makes it very obvious to people just what the rules are. It would probably make the tallying easier as well. :)

OK everybody, the change of rules. Since tomorrow the first round will be 2 points heal/hurt vote and the second round 1 point vote. Voting for the same characters in both rounds is not allowed.

Example:

Hurt: Apophis

Day 4 vote 2 (1 point)

Heal: Jack
Hurt: Doci

How do you think, with new rules should I restart a game or continue, but for instance not allow for 3 or 4 rounds to hurt with 2 points the characters which got too much hurt votes recently?

You just vote based on how you feel about certain character at the moment, or you heal your all time favourite character and hurt the character you don't like at all. And why twice a day? Hmm... good question :)

thanks...

first of all i'd like to say that its unreasonable and unfair to single out one group of fans by implying that they are the ones skewing votes by constantly voting for the same person one way or the other. most people who are voting multiple times are voting for the same people, be it to heal the same person, hurt the same person, or to do both. i've noticed people healing or hurting vala, sam, jack, doci, whatever. if that person truely is the favourite or least favourite then its a fair vote in my eyes.

second, and more importantly, i don't think its neccessary to restart the vote in terms of starting a new thread. if you really want, it would be just as easy to go through this thread, and have a recount based on the new rules. if thats too much trouble i'll do it for you, i'm trying to avoid doing my final assignments. :D

but before we do anything maybe we should just decide on finalised rules for the game. once decided, there is no more changing the rules because your preferred character isn't winning, or your least favourite character is winning, or someone got eliminated and you didn't want them to or whatever.

if you aren't happy with the rules, then start your own tournament. and that goes for sam fans, jack fans, teal'c fans, vala fans, any other fan you can name.

personally i'm happy with it the way it is. if you don't like it, then vote. ;) that the point of the game isn't it?

I'd have to agree that nothing good can come from changing the voting rules for some characters and not for others.

Personally, my vote is for closing this thread and restarting the entire game with the finalized rules in a new thread. But then, as most of you have probably figured out by now, I'm kind of a purist. :)

(BTW, small vocabulary lesson:
"since" has two possible meanings: "Because," and "Beginning at a point in time (in the past) and continuing until now." If the word you're looking for means, "Beginning at a point in time (in the future)," then the word you're looking for is "starting." i.e. "Since yesterday, I've been sick." "Starting tomorrow, I need to stop being sick." :) )

aw that cos you're a trouble maker! ;) (do people want to close samanda, blue jello and the ship thread? other than the obvious people who would want to do that i mean ;) )

to be honest, i don't care what we do. its likely to end up with the same result of a small few being unhappy with the rules and outcome regardless of who is winning. and it just adds up the extra thread count. if people want to start their own independant version of the tournament, i might play if i like the rules, or have the patience. but i don't think the exact same thread should be restarted, with the same persons tournament, just with a slightly different rule book.

how bout stating at the first page that the rules change as of post number whatever, and start the count fresh on the next page? just an idea.

Hey people, ya know it's not really the done thing to change rules of a competition while it is still going. At the beginning is fine if something is unworkable but not three days in because some people do not like the results.

If you don't like the rules FH then end this thread and start a new one with new rules. I happen to think that it is pointless to do so because people are still going to vote the same way.

I don't want to start over (not that it matters at this point, :p ), but I really think that if you guys are going to start games like these, you need to either have all of the rules in place, or just simply don't change them and start a whole new one some other time. :) I know you guys can't be omniscient or anything, but I like consistency in these games. Either we start out skewed and everyone knows it and can vote accordingly, or we start out on the right foot and end on the right foot. Call me crazy. :p
