    Earth Starships Mislabelled (Writer's Goofs)?

Typically, naval vessels are labeled with their type, followed by the number they are of that type. For instance, the 63rd battleship ever launched in the US would be BB-63 (BB-63, incidentally, is the USS Missouri).

So if Stargate were to remain true to the conventions for ship designation, Prometheus would be BC-1, Daedalus BC-2, and Odyssey BC-3. If the ship were designated 'BC-303,' that would mean that it was the 303rd ship of its class.

If, on the other hand, the Air Force is treating these ships as bigger, better aircraft, they've still been misnamed.

Designations still start with the first type of that ship that was made. Even if you assume that the '300' label designates the craft as a part of the 'alien-derived space fleet,' Prometheus should then be BC-301, with the Daedalus class as BC-302 (assuming that they are both Battlecruisers).

They're not mislabelled. The navy classify their ships by Type-Production number. But the Airforce classify craft by designs. If the Air Force followed the navy's suite, the then thousands of F/A-18s around would range from F/A-18 to F/a-10,000.

Even though the Prometheus and Daedalus are closer to naval vessels then fighters, they still belong to the Air Force regardless.

And as i explained elsewhere, they would still put the fighters in the same line as the cruisers as they're all spacecraft. the 300 series means they're a space series, probably.

            Thank you!

The thing that's missing from Prometheus, Daedalus (and soon, Odyssey) are tail numbers.

Then again, the Space Shuttle fleet lack tail numbers so.....

Just like F means "Fighter" in F-302
and X means Xperimental in X-301

But the space shuttles aren't property of the Air Force, now are they?

By proper USAF desigantions, it means Bomber/Transport. Which sums it up pretty accurately, I think.

The Air Force, Navy, Marines, and Army have a unified numbering system that's been in place since 1962. All aircraft (airplane, helicopter, and spacecraft [shuttle excluded]) are included in this numbering system

Out of curiosity, what IS the designation for Nasa Shuttles? I believe that they call them the "Orbiter" class shuttles right? How many are in operation? And why don't they piggy back a shuttle ontop a 747 and launch the shuttle into space similar to what O'Neill attempted to do with the overloading stargate episode?
