welcome to the forum grinningspoon, please use search next time, im sure there is a thread on this. No-one really knows the answer, cause no one on the show has done it. Its all speculation. I personally reckon you'll get torn apart or just go to the otherside of the gate.

That is actually a rather interesting question. I'm not quite sure... However, given the non-3D nature of subspace I suspect one of two things would happen. Either your molecules would simply be lost in the same way walking into an incoming wormhole would... or... you'll simply be transported to the other gate as though you'd come through the front. Somehow the second option seems like the more plausible possibility. And if that is the case, then it might be possible to have 2 lines of people entering the gate all at once. Maybe.

The splash of a newly establishing wormhole is definately always on the same side though. Hmmm

Well... also don't forget (unless I'm mistaken) the front of the gate is the only side with the lighted chevrons. As to the right end up... the top chevron is slightly different from the other ones.

I have always thought you get to the other side of the gate. But getting to the other gate sounds plausible.

I'd assume the ancients were smart enough to engineer the stargate so that people who walk in the other side will re-materialize on the other end safely as well. Still, it's an intersting question.

Wondered the same thing although if they could use the other side I imagine they would. So I think it would be either the equivelant to walking in to an incoming wormholes event horizen or you just end up walking through the gate without entering subspace and end up on the other side of the same gate.

As for safety when it came to gates the ancients didn't seem that big on safety features, such as signs warning about what looks like a cool splash for kids to play in, when it would actually turn them in to crispy critters.

Hey I would just like 2 say that Chevron 7 (top chevron) is only different to the others in the film where it frames the symbol underneath it.

I think the main difference between the top chevron on the TV stargate, and the others, is that the top chevron actually moves in a downward motion when locking in coordinates. The other chevrons merely light up, but they don't actually move.
