when they are dialling out they have the DHD in front of the gate and they they are coming through the gate they come through the correct way

If you mean how do they know which way the gate should be put in the SGC, the front side is the side where the chevrons and the inner circle is

Im not sure, but I wouldnt av thought so unless the SGC techs made a trial and error mistake to find out - cut part of the wall behind the gate out

The back of the gate does not look the same. But there are a few scenes where they have made mistakes with that. Like in Moebius when the gate is lowered the symbols are facing the wrong way. Also several times on Dakara scenes this season you will see the symbols when looking from behind the gate towards the ancient weapon. But when we saw the weapon activated last season the chevrons were on the side closer to the weapon, which makes sense since the weapon dials the gate.

No, if you look at this screencap from 'the enemy within,' the 'orange' chevron (top right of picture) is only on the 'front' of the gate:
