(I know we're not supposed to start threads, but a lot of people seem to have a use for this, the FAQ thread veered away from that question, and I know Sharp at least is busy. If it's a problem, we can let it die later.)

Description: I'm going to say there are some storage sheds near the base; cleared land for about 70-100 yards all around. There are some medium density woods, and plenty of native plants and veggies (the stuff that's been in the stew in the mess). The cleared area is pretty flat, good for sports or small test crops. There is a well and pumphouse that provides water to the base.

(Open to suggestions/corrections if you think it's necessary)

The trail is a hiking loop that goes past the firing range. At the start of the trail are several large, flat rocks. The "bare ground" area may be used later if anyone finds some plants or animals from another planet they would like to bring back and study or maintain for supplies.

Ka'te wanders out to the bare ground near the picnic area with a sturdy shovel, an impish grin on her face. The weather was nice, and she had an interesting plan to get her mind of her boredom and thoughts of Earth. She eagerly dug the shovel into the dense dirt, making a shallow hole about 3 feet across. (A meter for all you non-Americans)

Grinning at her work, she went inside to clean up and get some lunch.

Geogre Decided to go for a run, he then realized he could kill to birds with one stone. he would jog to his spot and make sure Tio made his dlevery. George began to run towards the Bare Grounds, he went past a Gap in the fence and made his way through some dense dorest. After about three miles he came to a clearing with High grass. he stopped to quench his thirst and continued about two miles. he then went through about 2 miles of the woods until he reached a trail. he followed the trail for three miles, it Deadended into a tall crop, lit looked like a cornstalk but did not have corn. from the trail he tured right and took exactly thirty steps, he pushed back some crop and there was an opening in the ground with stairs.

Jen jogged up from the base to the surface, squinting in the sunshine she hadn't seen since Langara. She headed down a trail that looped around the firing range until the quiet area with defenseless paper people pinned up on thick banks of dirt that stopped the bullets came into view. She had taken two clips of ammo from the armory and loaded the first one into the Beretta. She fired several times, averaging about 70% hits, which was normal for her.

Harry exited the base for the sunshine of the Outdoors. Harry had always loved the outdoors, besides fixing things there was not much else to do in Vermont. Harry had always loved basketball he used to play it with his friend after school when they were in highschool. Harry remebered how those games had been rough, real rough. Harry decided to shoot some hoops. There were a couple of basketballs in the storage shed so he took one that was full of air and started to do some lay ups.

George peered into the hole with stairs, he made his way down. it was dark and narrow. it was a fairly straight passage and after a few yards he could see the light on the other side. he got to the end and looked out, there was a waterfall right in front of him, infact the he was right under it, he walked to the side, and saw a river that the the waterfall lead into. on both sides there were lush jungles, with high trees that bore fruit. there were many huts with a few tree houses, those were huge. he made his way to he first hut and went inside. the shipment was there and alittle extra too, some various meats and snacks. " Tio, you are the man!" George looked at his watch and bgan to make his way back. he reached the base and went back inside.

George knew that the inhabitans of te village were long gone. Tme had made it dilapedated. it was covered in vines, he knew the base acheologists would have loved to see it, but it was his escape, his Utopia, he nicknamed it GeorgeTopia.

<< from Armory >> roughly 2100 hours

Dean and Kym took the elevator to the surface and went out to the recreation area. Dean led the way to the basketball court, dropped the duffle bag and flipped on the lights.
Kym turned back from the trail to the firing range. “Aren’t we going to the range?”
“No. No lights.” Dean hung a burlap bag filled with rags from the fence. A few feet away he hung an old leather punching bag. The third item drew a surprised exclamation from Kym.
“What the h3ll is that?”
“The kitchen gave me a carcass. No one likes the meat from this.”
Kym pulled the black gloves on, smoothing the leather between her fingers. “Where do I start?”
“First, I want to see how well the armor on the back works.” He hefted a baseball bat. “I’m going to swing at you. Block it.”
*thwack* The muffled thud of steel on wood echoed back from the trees.
“Didn’t feel a thing. Try again.”
*THWACK* The echo was louder this time. “OK. That stung.” Kym shook her hand to dispel the feeling. “Hold the bat steady at head height. Let me do the hitting.”
Dean braced the wood against a fence pole.
In a martial arts strike, Kym back handed the bat and knocked it out of Dean’s grasp.
“Wow. You can’t do that with your bare hand.”
She flexed her fingers and smiled. “For that alone, they’ll be worth it.”
They went to the punching bag. Kym gave it a couple of back-handed slaps before spinning around and driving a punch into the center of the bag.
Dean winced as they examined the half-inch deep indentations in the leather. “Ooooowww!”
“Too bad you’re not wearing armor.”
“What?!” Dean looked alarmed at the suggestion. “We’ll put a vest on a dummy. Not me.”
“OK. OK. Relax,” she laughed. “Blades next?”
“Why not? Start with the burlap.”
Kym slid the blades out and locked them. A forward strike easily penetrated the fabric. She hit again with both fists and pulled sideways. Shredded rags spilled out in a flood. Stepping over to the leather bag, Kym punched again. Right hand, left hand. An uppercut with a twist ripped open long vertical strips. Shaking her head, she approached the carcass.
“YEEEAAAA.” The woman unleashed a flurry of punches and swipes. In less than a minute, the piece of meat was shredded.
“Whoa!” They both stared at the remains, a little disconcerted at the amount of damage.
Dean handed Kym a rag. Absentmindedly, she wiped the blades clean, disengaged the lock and slid them back into the sheaths.
“I think I have to think about these.” Kym peeled off the gloves and handed them back to Dean.
Together they cleaned up the mess and went back inside. Without a word, they went their separate ways.

Ka'te breathed in deeply as she exited the base, knapsack in hand. She headed for the trail, looking for inspiration. She plucked a few leaves from several bushes and trees, but kept an eye out for more interesting things. She hoped to find some nuts, berries, seeds, or roots that could potentially be useful.

After she had looped all the way around the 5k trail, her pack was full of little cloth packets full of seeds, leaves, and even some fragrant bark she had found. She headed for the science lab to see if any of them could be of use.

Donna walked on to the empty court dribbling the ball, She never had problems getting or keeping the ball she was good at that the only problems she had was shooting the ball not one of her strong points which she really doesnt like pointing out. Walking round the court doing some tricks she had picked up over the many years of playing the game, she stopped to make a 3 point shot, releasing the ball it was headed straight for the hoop it looked as if it was going to go in then it hit the rim and bouced off "Damn" she ran down picked up the ball next trying a jump shot close in which went in then tried a few more which also went in taking the ball out a little to try another 3 point shot and failed again as it bounced back off the ring "DAMN" she couldnt see what she was doing wrong, she kept trying and was making around 2 shots out of 5, "Ah man do I need the practise".

As george stepped out of the hatch his boot stepped into an very gooey mud. "wait a minute julie" George stepped out of the mud and reached out his hand. Dr.Steele took it and jumped over gooey mud. They made thier way through the terrain until they reached George's secret spot. As soon as they came out of the tunnel, julies eyes opened wide. "WOW" she said as she panned the riverside. "This is amazing, no wonder you have kept it a secret, its paradise." They set up campin one of the Hut's and started a fire.
julie reached into her pack, She pulled out a smores kit."lets make some Smores" she said while shaking the box. George replied "sure, but i have to warn you, i have never been good at making them. i always set the marshmellows on fire.Julie replied "well it just so happens i know a fool proof way of making them." George lokked at her " O do you, please teach oh smores master." Julie sat down on a log and patted the spot next to her " C'mon george, I do not bite" George sat down Julie continued "Now the trick to a perfectly toasted marshmallow is the rotate the stick not keeping any one part facing the flame. See" Julie lifted thte stick right in front of her face. George perred into her eyes and pushed the stick to the side. He then passionately kissed Julie. She popped back into the tentand got dressed. She came out of the tent in some tight athletic wear. George served the eggs. " So when are we going hunting?" She asked while stabbig her fork into the eggs". George replied " Right after beakfast" . They finished and got suited up. George took the Springfield sniper rifle, Julie the 12 guage. They dressed in camo and went deep into the woods. they quietly sat not to far away from a pond. George saw a a flying creature take off ino the air. He pointed to it and told julie to aim. She turned and fired. she fell back as soon as she did. she got up and looked into the sky. The bird fell from the sky a few feet from them. they recovered it and went back to camp. they took the feathers off of it and roasted it on a pit over a fire. they ate it George said " it tastes like duck" they bothe chuckled. they then broke down camp and headed back.

James walks outside and sits on a bench. He sits there in the warm sun enjoying the scenery. He then decides to go for a walk around the area. He gets up and walks northernly. He walks for about an hour, he stops to look around and sees some caves. He walks over to the caves and gets out his torch that is on his belt, and turns it on. "Well i might aswell." He steps inside the cave, and walks down the tunnels. He then walks into a large chamber and hears some very quiet low humming. He walks around trying to find it. He then looks over some rocks. *What the Hell* He sees several strange dimly glowing objects. "What are these?"

George was scared, he knew he was probaly going to die. he was stubborn though, he had to do this, he was the only one who oculd fly the copter and get this thing away from the base. hopefully his idea would work, he once read a report that SG1 sed a mountain to shield the explosion. George went to move a pedal and winced in pain. His leg was beginning to get numb, he did not know if that was good or not, he figured it was for the time being so he could complete his mission. George then turned on the Radio.

" Alpha base, this is Razor1,Imean Major George A. Rhea, on board i am carrying a reactor that has gone Critical. I am attempting to get this reactor as far away from the base as possible. George limped a few feet and placed the reator on the ground carefullly not to upset it. George then limped back to the opter as fast he could. One the shockwave passed, George took off once again, now he had absolutely no feeling in his leg. George headed toward the substation to pick up martin and his team.

"Base thisis Razor 1 mission accomplished!"

<<From orbit>>

Jims' F-302 came hurtling down at insane speeds, the inertial dampeners weren't effective enough, Jim could feel the G's being forced upon him.
"D..d...d...DAVE!" Jim managed to yell, he was pulling back on the stikc as much as possible.

Dave was just cursing and mashing on his keyboard randomly.

The Jaffa in the clearing all looked up at the screeching F-302 about to land on-top of them.

"Jaffa, Kree! Di'dak'dia!? Shal'lokma'kor!!" the Jaffa seemed to scream, they all aimed their staff weapons at the F-302.

Fat lot of good it did, the staff blast came hurtling past the F-302 about five meters away from where it had just been.
"D..." Jim couldn't move his mouth the G's were so hard up against him.

A loud unbelieveble creak was heard...the F-302 was going to rip apart before it hit the ground.

Suddenly, like a wieght had been liften, just above the Jaffas' head, the F-302 pulled up, it's engines all but touched the ground they were so close, the Jaffa had started to bolt in every direction, away from the F-302, the lead Jaffa looked pissed.

Jim exhaled, and flew towards the hangar.
Dave nodded. "Good idea sir, land before anything else bad happends..."

Jim turned his radio on while flying quite freely towards the hangar.
<R> "Acer, we almost crashed back there, we're going to land for repairs, there's no way we can keep flying in this condition, i'm pretty sure this things about to fall apart from the creeking that's coming from it, see ya in the Hangar sir." <R>

He then turned on his radio again except this time towards someone in the hangar.

<R> "This is Unlucky, coming in an emergency landing, clear the damned runway!" <R>

"This is Unlucky, coming in an emergency landing, clear the damned runway!"
<R> "you betcha unlucky pft, unlucky my rump...."

Sharp saw the jaffa on the ground and smiled, he had a little surprise, a custom thing he had added to his f-302, it was nothing much, just a few small bombs.. Sharp dived down into the croud about15 yards above their heads and emptied his small hatch, as he sped off he heard some booms as staff weapon fire was sent around him. "nice" Sharp said heading back to where the dogfight was.

While the major took control of flying the Black Hawk Harp took control over the guns and began to lay down fire destroying the enemy jaffa who could do nothing but miss at the will of the majors great flying ability but those who would did get ready stayed focus and aimed let harper pick them off quickly as they stupidly didnt take cover. " Razor1 Firing rockets." George left none. He launched them all. He cocentrated them on the main bridge or what he thought the bridge was. " Direct hit!" The trnasport crash landed and went up in flames. Very few jafa got free.

George then saw something that made him look twice. Three kull wariors walked out of the wreckage without a scratch. " Ok Harper, take your team of SF's and try to hault those kull warriors. I wiil be back with help." With that George left them and went back to the base for help.

The SF's set up some mines hoping to slow them down so help could ariive. By the time they got to the mines they had already spotted us and were firing and firing and yet still firing on us. We had no choice but to detinate the mines before our cover had been obliterated. Only 1 stood after the blast. 1 was getting up completely uneffected as well but the other seemed to have been destroyed but no sign of its body. George , in order to reach harper and his team had to go right through the jaffa camp. George figured his shield would protect him. he was wrong. the jaffa were ready for him. they fired all of their staffs and cannons at him. George made it through but barely. Then a glider came by and got behind him, a diredt him overloaded georges powergrid. His shield failed. George was able to direct the the Blackhawk to a field where he amazingly landed it with little damage. George walked away from the copter. The glider made a passand fired his guns. Luckily for george he missed. George then went into the copter and took out a tube. he then atched a handle with a trigger coonected and then another handle that went farther up a tube. He unlatched a missle and and shoved it down the tube. Geore then unfolded a target sight off the tube and lined up the Glider. When it was lined up, George fired. The missle spun into the air leaving a trail of smoke. The missle hit smack dab in the middle and seperated the glider into two fireballs. George ran into the woods to search and meet up with Harper.

When Beale paused just outside the base, Jaime thought she might have a chance of catching up to him. By now, she was getting a bit miffed herself; she was scratched from a patch of thorny bushes she'd fought through, and somewhere along the line a tree branch had smacked her in the face. She could feel a cut on her cheek and when she swiped at it irritably, it left a smear of blood on the back of her hand. Cursing under her breath, she looked up and realized Beale had headed inside.

Dammit.... Grumbling, she followed. She figured there were two places he could be heading in his state: the Hangar Bay, which was full of Jaffa, or the Brig, currently holding several high-ranking Goa'uld from the attack. Since he'd passed the Hangar Bay already, that meant that more than likely he was making for the Brig.

She clicked on her radio. "Colonel Harvey, this is Jaime. Major Beale seems to have been emotionally stressed by finding Lt. Martin, he's gone a bit off the deep end. I'm following him, we're at the base, and I think he's heading for the brig. I'll radio the Control Room and alert them to the situation."

Without waiting for a reply, she clicked over to channel 4 as she walked into the base. "Control Room, this is Jaime Taylor of SG-3. Please be aware that we found Lt. Martin's body on the Alarius. Major Beale seems to have reacted badly to the lieutenant's death and is in the base. He is armed and may be dangerous to himself and others. Alert the guards at the Brig that I believe he is heading their direction and they need to be on their guard. He's not quite himself; I'd advise against physical force unless absolutely necessary. Taylor out."

"Damn" Kari cursed as her F-302 hurtled toward the Alpha Site at a blazing speed. 'I did not get killed in the first round' thought Kari, 'I will not get killed now' Slowly calming her breath down, she took her last shot as her hand touched the eject button. 'Oh well' she thought dully, 'better alive than dead'

Kari shot out of her F-302 just seconds before it crashed to the ground and went up in blazes.......

"Well, that was fun." Kari said as she dusted off the dirt on her uniform. "Let's see, 2 arms, 2 legs, and a head." She said as she checked her body. "Hmm.. good enough." Checking the time on her watch as she walked toward the base, "Oh.. at least I'll make it back before lunch."

A few minutes later:

As she walked toward the base, Kari sensed that something was wrong. She quickened her pace up the small hill. When she got to the top, she saw what was wrong. Lt. Col. Jason "Gator" Richardson was unarmed with a Jaffa pointing a staff weapon at him.

"Darn It" Kari swore, "Why can't those damn Jaffas just leave us alone!!" She took out the Zat gun she had carried with her before her flight and activated it before she ran down the hill.

As the Jaffa was just about to shoot, Kari dove to the ground just to make sure if the Jaffa had turn around, she wouldn't get shot, and opened fire with the Zat. Twice, and one more just to clean up the job.

Kari got up to one knee and smiled at the shocked Lt. Col.

By the time she stepped out into the sunshine, Jaime was smiling. It felt wonderful to be outside. Setting her water bottle on the bench near the door, she stretched a couple more times and then started off on her run after setting her watch. A smallish path had been created around the exterior of the base, and it was smooth and covered in the wood chips of the trees that had been cleared to make it. Perfect running conditions.

As she ran, Jaime let her mind clear. All she knew was the sun and shade dappling across her face, the cool air on her skin, and the way her feet thumped into the ground in an endless rhythm.

Thinking of nothing, she ran.

Matthews, now Steped out the base. Sercurity was still tight, and he needed his clearance as well as passwords to confirm his identity since Beale was found as a gou'ld.

Sleep had been the same. he thought fresh air would do him good. Sleep was annoying him his dreams kept him constantly tired. He would dream that he was a king, in ancient times and sit on a throne, and that everyone around him, the jester, the queen and the pesants were the people of the base. The dream itself was not differant from the other times. The Peseants would plead for the king to protect them from evil, but the king had no sword and he found that he coulnt speak or say anything at all. Then the queen, was Col harvey, pleaded for Matthews to help her and the people but still he couldnt say anything.

The dream ended with dark clouds brewing, and people panicing, and a bright light is comming from a small box under the throne. he was about to grab the box, when he would wake up it looked like a bright light was comming from somewhere, and when he would be fully woken, he could see the rod acting strnagly then turn silent.

As he strolled up past the gates, deep in thought. "What is this relic, why am i bonded to it? Matthews didnt realise that he was repeating himself out loud.He as approched the area past the gates, he noticed that jamie began for a jog down one of the tracks, he attention, was then drawm to a massive crash, the remains of an F-302's wreckage burned brightly, the smell of aircraft fuel and burnt computer chips and equipment forced its way in the lieutenant's nostrils. Upon a closer look, two new people were talking, as selfish as it sounds, Issac didnt feel like meeting anyone at the current moment. (sorry Shadow and Biggator). He made his way under a small tree.

"It is bound to those who posess the power young one." came an strangly familiar voice, however this voice was clear and close."Who said that?" Matthews snarled, dropping the rod by his side, and removign the zat from his holster. "I have been watching you since we met, it was not my intention to let your friend perish, but i could not save his spirit." the voice seemed sad. "he was your comrad yes? you fought side by side?"

Matthews slowly lowerd his his zatt, he placed it in his holster, and picked up the rod. "you mean harry right?" Matthews voice clear and quiet." i did not have the power, becasue i had not fully awakend from my slumber. And for that i am truly sorry."

"who are you exactly" Matthews said, with a combanation of curiosity, and frustration. "Why, i am the soul who inherits the rod, i protect our species, you who is our Second evoultion. My name is Allurai, the forgotten hero of the Ancients."

As she circled around to the base entrance again, Jaime slowed to a walk. She took her pulse and checked her time, mentally calculating her pace. Not bad, she thought as she began to stretch out. Probably not quite up to Marine standards, but not bad. I'll have to work on that.

Satisfied, and feeling much more centered than she had in a great while, Jaime picked up the water bottle she'd left on the bench and showed her credentials to the guard at the door. Shower came first, then a quick trip to the infirmary- she was sure Dr. Attington (or at the very least one of his staff) would want to check on her stitches- and then she planned to hit the commissary.

Leaning back against the nearest tree, Matthews couldnt take his eyes off the rod. The touch of the rod was now warm and smooth, and felt comfotable in is hands. He saw Jamie return to base, but he couldn't say anything at the moment, the shock was too intense to just shrug off."Isnt that a friend who helped find Harry Martain?" ignoring Allurai he began to barate her with his questions "So what is the rod then?" Matthews barked, getting addicted to the mystery of the rod.

"All will be revealed Issac Matthews, in due time. My power isnt strong enough to help you and your comrads just yet."

with frustration and confusion rife in Matthews mind, he needed to set his mind strait "Well, im off to prepare for my next mission, so i suppose we should take this somehwere else, feeling ennoyed he put the rod in his pocket and walsed away.

“Thanks again, Captain” said Richardson to Kari as the both of them turned and head back to the base.

A Few Minutes Later:
“Well, let’s just say that I miscalculated a move and they nicked me on the wings, and then there I went crashing down,” Kari grinned, “I do hope I didn’t kill anyone when that fighter crashed to the ground. That would be horrible”

“I’m sure you didn’t, I think most people are…” But Richardson never finished his sentence as something struck him in the leg and sent him sprawling to the ground.

Kari immediately dropped to the ground and crawled over to the Colonel who was trying his best not to show the pain that must be hurting him. Kari scanned the immediate area as 5 Jaffas walked up to them, each pointing an activated staff weapon in their hands.

“Shak’na Kree!!!” One of the Jaffas yelled.

Kari actually understood what the Jaffa had said, ‘Gosh!!! What use is that gonna be!!’

“No habla Haffa!” Kari yelled back while she tried to figure out a way to get out of the situation in front of her.

Another Jaffa took aim at the Colonel and fired as Kari instinctively grabbed the Colonel and pushed him behind her, and then covered him, the energy hit Kari like a whole entire building just fell on top of her, leaving a bloodied stain on the back of her jumpsuit. She gasped and tries to draw some air, she grabbed her zat gun and shot at the Jaffas while at the same time tried to block the Colonel from being the target. The poor Colonel was dragged around and could hardly stay on his feet. The Jaffas were resilient and kept coming, Kari draped one of the Colonel’s arms around her neck and whispered, “Sorry sir, this is gonna hurt.”

The Jaffas had hardly any time to react as they saw the two bloodied figures hurtling towards them with amazing speed. Two Jaffas were immediately killed by Kari’s swift shots from the zat gun while the other 3 was more lucky, they grabbed their staff weapons tried to hit the two Tau’ri with it. Kari kicked out with her leg and caught one Jaffa in the gut, and then shot and killed him with the zat. She knew there was no way that Richardson and her could get out unless she can catch them off guard. But the second time around didn’t work out; one of the Jaffas lashed out with his staff and caught Kari in the head. She fell to the ground as the other Jaffa tore the Colonel away, Kari could see Richardson trying to fight off the Jaffa but he was too weak, the Jaffa repeatedly hit him with the staff weapon and then struck him at his wounded leg, Richardson screamed out and fell to the ground as the Jaffa hit him in the head again, and Richardson laid motionless on the ground. Kari got to her feet but was immediately caught in a headlock with Jaffa that attacked her, “Screw You!!” she cursed as she grabbed her concealed switch knife on her belt and stuck it in hard into the Jaffa’s gut. The Jaffa’s grip loosened as Kari turned around and shot him with the zat. The last Jaffa fired his staff and it hit Kari in the right shoulder, just as the same time, Kari fired her zat twice and killed the Jaffa where he stood. She quickly ran to Richardson’s side and checked his pulse, it was weak and erratic, his leg was all mangled up while a gash ran across his forehead. Kari hauled the Colonel up and as fast as her legs could carry her ran back to the base, which was only a few clicks away.

As she got to the entrance, it looked deserted, Kari ran and ran, unless they were inside, she wasn’t going to stop. But before she and Richardson got in, a female officer came out. The lady abruptly stopped as she saw them, her expression turned from shock to horror, “God!!! What happened?”

“Jaffas…” was all Kari could manage before the pain in her back and shoulder hit like a waves of tsunamis and she collapsed into total darkness.

Kate jogged backwards in front of Jim, playing and laughing all the way. As they pushed their way out of the doors she looked round at the tarmac area and dragged Jim to the perimeter fence. Once she got to the opening in the barbed wire, the gateway to the forest, she started giggling and doing cartwheels.

After a few tumbles, she landed on her backside in the grass, propping herself up on her elbows and looking at Jim with a mischievous glint in her eyes.

"I believe we're off base now, Sir," she smiled, "And we're definitely off duty."

When she landed on her backside, Jim just grinned at her, at that, he took a quick look up at the sky.
"Beautiful day...In all my time here, I don't think I’ve seen one so clear."

Unlike Kate, however, Jim wasn't as quick as to wake up fully, and was still slightly groggy, but he was attempting to shake it off, the fresh air really was helping.

Jim raised his right eyebrow and walked over to where Kate was propped up.
"What's with all this 'Sir' stuff eh? Want me to go all military on your arse?"

He was teaching me about different types of energy at the time, about how kinetic energy could be converted, dynamos and all that sort of thing. He wriggled slightly closer to her and stared at a large cloud that was approaching from the horizon.

'Doing that to much lately. Gotta stop it.' Jim thought to himself.
"Well...They are very scattered, the last one's I had were in the infirmary, for some reason, I didn't have them last night."

Jim realized he was dancing around the subject and followed up with.
"Generally, they all start off the same, I'm sitting down, or running, or playing, or waking up like I usually would, and then the day continues on from there..." Jim paused, he blinked several times, he felt like he was half in and half out of existence.

"...However, my subconscious has a tendency to keep bringing back the particularly bad days, whenever I got beat up, something I treasured was destroyed...I hated them all so much for it...My most recent dream was when they destroyed my only piece of literature, odd as it may seem, I can't remember the title of the book, I just remember enjoying it so much because it was a nice book."

Jim had completely flipped back into flashback mode, and was like a narrator, telling his own story.
"And...I got my own back. I beat the toughest kid in the orphanage up, everyone wanted a piece of me from then on, if you couldn't fight, you were nothing and the most hated kid around, if you could fight, you were everyone's worst nightmare and were also the most hated kid around, it was a loose, loose situation."

Jims' eyes began to well up, but he tried to force the tears back.
"From then on, I became a loner, no friends, no family...I joined the military to escape it all. My schooling was just barely good enough to get me in, however, I did have SOME friends, they helped me with allot of things..."

Jim stopped there, he just stared at that singular cloud now, it was substantially closer.

Kate propped herself up on one elbow to look down on him as she listened. She suddenly realised how tough this must be for him and how the memories must haunt him.

She sat up, tucked her legs under her and swung herself round so she was facing him. Pulling him upright, as his eyes welled up, she drew him into a hug, tucking her face into his neck as she rubbed his back comfortingly.

"It's ok," she whispered into his neck, "You're here now, you've got us. Me, Rich, Blue... we'll all look after you. I promise."

Jim forced himself not to sob, he didn't want to, but yet he wanted to, he felt mixed, very mixed.

Jim leaned against Kate slightly and whispered to her. "Thank you...So much. It means so much that you're all there for me...And each other...."

Jim leaned against her for several moments, letting the now increasing wind rush through his short hair, and he watched as Kates' hair was whipped back.

"...Despite how cliche' this may sound, I really do not like psychiatrists, I was once ordered to see one when I was at the SGC, all he did was antagonise the hell out of me, if the nightmares come back, I think i'll just ask Gus for sedatives..."

Jim leaned back now, he had his legs sticking out to the side of him, and decided to follow Kates' example and tuck his legs under them, his legs were a little sore, but he didn't really notice, he stared into Kates' piercing green eyes.

"...Y'know, aside from this right now, what IS there outside of that base? Or inside of it? Most of the time I was here, it was usually for resources or resupply runs, I was mostly on missions or at the SGC...To be honest, I haven’t really been looking around here for things to do for fun."

Kate noticed the change of topic, she wanted to add that she was always there for him, but let it be. He clearly didn't want to talk about it.

"I dunno, really. I don't spend a lot of time outside really. I'd love to go exploring, but we've not got too long, we have reports to write."

She rolled onto her knees and leant over him, swinging one leg across, just like she did back in the infirmary. That seemed so long ago now.

She leant down and kissed him gently.

"And I'm sure as hell not going to waste any time."

Jim smiled at this, he felt worn now, however, alot less than he would have if he'd been retelling his history to anyone else.

"No, neither am I." At that, he leant forward and kissed her pationately, he wrapped both his arms around her again and swayed for a few seconds while kissing, and then pulled away.

"I don't mean to jump the gun or anything, but what are we going to do about that report General Blue told as to do..." Jim enquired, it was like homework, it just kept nibbling at the back of his mind.

Kate sat up and sighed in mock frustration.

"Ever the hopeless romantic, aren't you, Jim?" she giggled. "Come on. Let's get it sorted."

She stood up and helped him to his feet as the first few raindrops began to fall. Quickly, they began to become heavy splatters, becoming a fully fledged downpour, drenching both the officers.

Kate smiled. They could dampen her clothes, but nothing could dampen her spirits. She wrapped her arms tightly around Jim as she kissed him, water pouring down both their faces, goosepimples breaking out on her bare legs.

When Kate had helped Jim up, he looked up at the sky as a bead of water his face.

"The hell is this coming from?" Jim stared at that cloud, that one cloud, it had turned dark grey and was the source of it.
'And to think I was enjoying looking at you!' Jim thought to himself.

Jim looked at Kate as they headed inside, sure they were both now sopping wet, but hey, it would dry off, and Jim was enjoying her company so much.
"I feel sorry for any other poor shmuck caught in this, if they're out there, I fancy watching a movie, don't you? I vote the lounge" Jim said to Kate, at that, they went inside.

Luckily a cave complex was only about a mile away, Heckofa'lot closer then the five miles to get back to base. Rich went into a dead run and managed to reach the caves before the deluge started. 'Maybe I can reach someone on the radio.' He thought. "This is LT. Richard Dobson of SG7, Can anyone hear me?" All he got was static. Rich decided to explore the cave. 'It's actualy pretty nice in here, maybe i'll come back in a little while. He thought as he made a mark on his map. A sudden rain shower made Blue take cover under a tree. Leaning there, sipping from a bottle of water, he felt the tension trickling away like the random rain drops that made it through the leaves.
"D**n you, Jack," he swore at O'Neill's ghost, "You made it sound so good. 'A couple of years there and you'll be able to retire anyplace in the world.'" He laughed at the irony. "Anyplace in the world. Except I don't have a freaking world any longer."
Nick continued as though having a real discussion with O'Neill. "It was a kick imagining Helen-the-Harpy's frustration at not being able to hunt me down again. It must have really frosted her to get stopped at a PO box in Colorado Springs. 'Dog me to the ends of the Earth' she said."
He sat at the base of the tree. "Jack, I'd be willing to put up with her for the chance to have Earth back."
He started thumping his head against the tree trunk. "Now I feel like an idiot. Some upstart little Cadet tells me what I d**n well know and I bug out. I'd like to have Anderson and Howard shot. I can't even afford the personel to have either of them transfered. They're disrupting the whole base and I can't do a GO***N thing about it."
During his monologue, the rain petered to a stop. Nick peered up at the clouds scudding away and slowly got to his feet. He hesitated on the path, looking both ways.
"What's to stop me from taking off," he asked rhetorically, "It's not like they're going to Court-Martial me."
He took two steps down the path away from the base and ran into the figurative wall of his Father's disapproval. Nick could see the old man standing there, his arms folded, glaring at him.
Captain Alexander Mikailovich Belousav was backed by a long line of Russian military men on one side and a slightly shorter but equally impressive line of Americans on the other.
Nick raised his hands in surrender, "You win."
As he started the long walk back, he muttered, "It was just a thought."

Rowena reached the compound gates and slumped against them, waiting for Lt Dobson to join her. She was going to enjoy this, the cool, fresh air. She grinned in anticipation.

"I checked the map. Two clicks northwest, right?" she said shrugging. "I'm game. See you there."

Rowena set off, keeping her pace steady as she placed her feet on the uneven ground. Running too quickly would have double implications, she would tire too quickly and risk losing her footing and tripping over.

She smiled happily as she ran through the woods. This was her kind of fun.

Richard watched the young cadet disappear into the forest before running toward the nearby river, banking on being able to run faster on the flat shore.

Tracy Jane
February 23rd, 2006, 02:08 PM
Rowena noticed out of the corner of her eye that he'd taken the river path. She was at a slight disadvantage now. He had longer legs, huge legs, and was on his preferred ground. However, the river winds, and it's slippy down on the river bank. She was still in with a chance.

Rowena picked up the speed.

Richard was reaching the point where he would have to cross, if he slipped, Rowena would win for sure. He strolled over the moss covered rocks as fast as he could, painfully aware of the time he was losing. He made it to the other side and took off again, watching for the upcoming trail.

Tracy Jane
February 23rd, 2006, 02:35 PM
Rowena watched Dobson clambering painfully over the mossy rocks, as she skipped across a particularly shallow part of the river. It was a little pebbly and slippy, but nothing she couldn't deal with. She was still neck and neck with him.

Clayton paused. It was shallow. That probably meant the source was nearby, and the caves. But she must have veered off course. She needed to be following the river more, angle left slightly, nearer the upstream. She had to be nearly there, and she was further upstream than Richard, this put her in the lead.

She set off again, this time at a sprint. She couldn't afford to lose time, not with Dobson's long legs.

gatelover12
February 23rd, 2006, 02:39 PM
Richard soon realised Rowena was in the lead. 'like hell you are' He thought as he went into a sprint of his own, closing the distance with every stride.

February 23rd, 2006, 02:45 PM
Rowena could see the caves up ahead, she was nearly there. She pushed every muscle in her body to get that little extra speed. She could feel the slight chill caused by Dobson's shadown, he was that close now. She hadn't run a bad race given the size differences. But she wasn't going to lose now.

She pulled on, the cave entrance seemingly growing with every step, she could see the water bubbling out, all frothy and full of life. Just a few more steps....

gatelover12
February 23rd, 2006, 02:50 PM

Rowena's face darkened for a second as she got caked in mud. This isn't how she planned this. Then she smiled, rolled on her back and burst out laughing uncontrollably. How long was it since the last time she'd had fun? Really, honestly had fun?

"No, no of course not." He took another gulp. "It's just such a sudden change of behavor for you. We need all the competitive people we can get now that..." He winked.

She took a gulp of water and ran her hand through her short hair.

"My parents are both military. I got to see a lot growing up, and I was determined to be better and smarter than them. I've got a competitive streak, as you saw, Sir," she continued. "Beer? And all you did was offer me the coke, Sir," she said with a mock pout. "I'm hurt."

Kate began in a full run, and flung herself onto him.

Then it clicked,
'That man, Larry Hutchinson, I’d just filled out his request to join my team...' Jim thought to himself, Jim had stopped abut twelve steps away from the two, he saw in the background Richard, who was standing, he seemed to be panicking at the sight.

'This could get real ugly, real fast....Eh Richard?' Jim thought, he was thinking like Richard could hear him, which was ridiculous, of course.
Jim stood there, and watched as they spoke for a few moments, he could hear the occasional words.

Then he heard it, he used her pet name.
Then, she kissed him on the cheek.

Jim was ready to explode.
Anger. Pure. Unhandled. Anger. Was what was pulsing through Jim now.
'That, B******.' Jim thought in that same dark rage, he took to very loud steps, even in the grass, forward and stopped.

'What are you doing? What can I do? Obviously she isn't happy with you, why stop them? Let them be happy with each other. Hell, you can be there when it falls apart....GRAAAAAAAARGH!' Jim screamed in his mind.

He hadn't said anything so far, at that, he adjusted his jacket, and began to walk very heavily paced towards the Hangar.
Jim passed the two of them without any words, he just made sure his anger was present, he didn't want to look at Kate, no, he couldn't stomach it.

He stared ahead, Richard happened to be in the way.
'Move Richard, if you know what's good for you.' Jim thought to himself.
Jim continued to walk, and Richard seemed frozen in place, Jim adjusted his path slightly so he'd bump into the Lieutenants' shoulder.

Jim didn't mutter an apology or anything, he just continued into the hangar.

"Bad day." Jim said, out of earshot of anyone.

Holding Katie tightly, Larry could sense her anguish. "It'll be allright Katie. I'm here for you." Gently lifting her chin so she could see his eyes "You DO deserve to be comforted. I'm your friend. Maybe I'm new around here, but you were willing to give me a clean slate despite what happened with me in the SEALs. That meant a lot to me. A heck of a lot. It's been a long time since I've been able to not feel that weight on my shoulders."

Squeezing her tightly again he continued "I don't know what happened to make you so upset, but if and when you feel comfortable telling me, I'll listen." 'She looks amazing in the sunlight... but what she needs now is a friend, not a... stop it Larry, you've just met her... she needs a friend

Larry just kept holding her tightly, caressing her hair. He'd hold her as long as she needed him to.

Hearing something, Larry craned his neck towards the sound to see someone storming towards the base, bumping rather abruptly into Rich, whom he hadn't seen before. Sudden realization of who the figure was smashed across Larry's face like a right cross from a championship boxer.

'Oh crap! If that's who I think it is, this is totally going to be bad. That's not the way I wanted to start things of with my new team C.O. I hope this doesn't turn out to be a replay of the SEALs. But if everything I'd heard about the guy is true, he'll understand. Or will he. Rich looks like he's seen the face of death on a bad day '

"Umm... Katie, I think I just saw Col. Anderson" Larry whispered.

Larry looked nervous, apparently he'd just realized the amount of manure he now had to climb out of. 'Sorry bud, I really don't feel like taking sides right now.' "Umm... Katie, I think I just saw Col. Anderson" Larry whispered.

Kate thought this was an obvious and entirely stupid thing to say, until she looked up and saw him storming off. Her eyes opened in shock and horror as she realised that he was storming off. What was happening, why was he so mad at her?

She gave Larry a helpless and panicked look, her attention flitting between the two men. It seemed rude to leave Larry here, after he had been so kind, but what else was she meant to do. She couldn't lose him.

She disentangled herself from the taller man and cupped his face with one hand.

"I'm really sorry, Larry," she said, her eyes wide, "But you don't understand what's going on right now. I can't explain, I have to..."

She trailed off as she looked to the Colonel who was getting closer and closer to the hangar bay. She shot a distressed look at Larry, stretched up to him and hurriedly aimed a kiss at his cheek, a kiss that landed at the corner of his lips. Well, she had always had a lousy aim when panicked.

She backed off and ran towards the hangar bay, her hair swinging behind her.

Larry stood there for a few seconds, feeling like the whirlwinds of chaos were sweeping around him again. 'What did I go and get myself into this time? I'm just trying to help out the first person who's been willing to trust me right off the bat in a few years and now I seem to be in it deep again. Something tells me I know what Rich wanted to talk to me about.'

Reaching up to touch the corner of his lips where Katie.. Major Howard.. had kissed him, wondering what exactly that meant. Was it bad aim? And if so, in which way? He wished he had a clue in the romance department, but at the moment it was the last thing he needed to worry about. He just needed to make sure everyone else was ok, he was at the bottom of the priority list.

Sighing loudly, he trudged back to the hangar bay

<<From Brig>>

Charles arrived outside. It was fresh air. Something he needed. He hadn't run for a while. He decided that it might be a good idea to go for a jog. He really didn't care where.

Charles was about half an hour into his run. He was breathing pretty heavily now. Though he had gone only a few miles. God I am out of shape. Charles had to push himself even more. He kept up the pace. He was out of into the forest by now.

Charles had run about another mile when he came along an open field. It was like the one where he had almost lost everything. Charles could here the choppers overhead. Major Grant was giving him orders

"Keep low we don't want to be seen."
"Right."

Charles was sitting next to his best friend Seargent Kevin Little. They had been friends for a while. Charles knew, and trusted every man in his unit, but Kevin was the man he would count on outside of battle.

Charles had his G36 inhand and was about to get out of the chopper when he heard the sound of gunfire. Charles jumped onto the ground, and saw that one of his team members was down. Charles crawled to the corpse to find that it was Major Grant. He had a bullet hole straight through his neck. Charles didn't have to check the Major's pulse he was dead.

After seeing the body of Major Grant something in Charles snapped. Maybe it was the fact that they had bad intelligence, and some one probably betrayed them or that he was just pissed about alot of things, and this set him off, but he snapped, and opened fire.

He stood up. Something the enemy wasn't expecting. Charles took them out with a grenade, and a few burst of his G36. Then he felt pain in his leg, as it gave way, and Charles fell to the ground. He dropped his G36 and hit the ground. A solider was running towards him. Charles grabbed his 9mm, and with out hesitation fired into the man's head, and he fell.

Charles started to drag himself towards the chopper. He saw that the pilot had hit the deck and wasn't at the controls. Charles passed Kevin. He had a bullet wound in the chest. Without thinking Charles grabbed Kevin, and draged him into towards the chopper, as he did he passed the dead body of corparl Johnson. He had taken more than one shot, and his head was open with brains ozzing out. Charles almost threw up.

He managed to the Kevin into the chopper, and convinced the pilot to get to the controls. He did, and they took off as fast as they could. Charles wondered how come an RPG or similar weapon hadn't hit the chopper while it was on the ground.

Charles snapped out of it, and looked at the sun. It was almost gone. He looked at his watch. Frak Two hours just sitting here. I better get back.

The airman on duty at the Hangar Bay entrance saluted as the General and Dr. Lancaster walked by. "Weapons, sir?"

"Thank you, sir."
The two headed off down the path past the recreation area.

Before Lancaster could answer, he added, "or shall we segue directly into her telling me how to run the base?"

Hermione doubled over laughing at Nick's slip. It really wasn't his day, poor guy. She sobered up and crossed the stones herself, taking extra care. Upon reaching the other side she looked around her and sighed.

"You know, I've never been this far off base," she sighed. Looking back at Nick she continued to probe. "So, you mentioned Beale too. What's he done to upset you?"

Gen Blue
March 11th, 2006, 04:49 PM
"Up there," he pointed up the hill toward a tumble of rocks, "It's not Beale's fault. It's more my frustration with the Tok'ra and the Asgard. Now that we're no good to them as cannon fodder, they won't make contact. Beale needs to get that 'thing' out of his head."
Nick shuddered at the memory of how he felt when he just suspected that he'd been infested.

Hermione returned the man's hug, relieved that some of the tension appeared to have gone. The poor man dealt with so much on a day to day basis, it wasn't fair, it wasn't right and it certainly wasn't healthy.

She smiled at his superhero question. This was the side of him she loved, the playful, slightly childish and irreverant side. Shaking herself out of her daydream, she looked around the cave.

"So this is where you come to hide, is it?"

Gen Blue
March 11th, 2006, 06:11 PM
Nick held up a finger and retreated deeper into the cave. "Hide? Sometimes." His voice echoed from the rocks. "Mostly I use this place," he pulled up a dark gray cord that matched the rock face, "to keep the last of these cold."
He came back to Hermoine with 2 cold cans of Guinness. "Beer?"

Tracy Jane
March 11th, 2006, 06:21 PM
Hermione smiled and sat down on the rocks. She accepted the beer and thanked him for it before shooting him a puzzled look.

"And all this from the man who banned alcohol at Christmas?" she asked in a semi-mocking tone. "I'm impressed, Nick."

She pulled back the ring pull and closed her eyes at the satisfying crack and hiss. It was a sound she hadn't heard in a long while.

"You know, Roma would disagree with you there," Hermione pointed out, taking another long swig. "Her thoughts on the matter, as she's preached a thousand times or more, are that off world you are technically on duty 24/7."

Hermione rolled her eyes to show Nick what she thought of her daughter's attitude. She then paused and fiddled with the ring pull for a moment, before tackling the next question.

"What's really going on, Nick?" she asked him. "All this stuff about SG7 and Beale... it's not the problem. It's the catalyst, not the cause."

Gen Blue
March 12th, 2006, 08:15 AM
"Off-world, huh? That's based on the assumption that you have a world to which you can return." Nick took another sip of his beer and leaned back.
"You know where I got these? General O'Neill brought them when he did his final inspection tour before going to Washington. Two months later, BOOM, we're homeless. I was supposed to go on leave, back to Earth, for Thanksgiving and my father's 85th birthday. I'd hadn't seen any of my family in a year," he paused and leaned forward, pinching the bridge of his nose, "I still haven't unpacked my duffle. His gift is in it."

Tracy Jane
March 12th, 2006, 08:57 AM
Hermione walked over and knelt down, putting her arm round Nick. She could see he was trying to stop himself crying, but somehow she didn't feel it would work. Not this time.

Hermione knelt there, not sure what to say. Any comfort she could give would seem so hypocrytical given her situation. There she was complaining about her family, when the rest of the base no longer had one.

She rubbed her palm across his back, waiting for him to continue.

Gen Blue
March 12th, 2006, 09:15 AM
Nick inhaled deeply and let it out very slowly. "I saw them. When I was in the infirmary. Even Konstantin and he died in '72. I wanted to stay there, Min. I was willing to give up."
He lifted his head and gave the woman a small smile, "Clayton reminds me of Lizabet, Illya's daughter. She was a 1st year cadet at the Academy. Brilliant girl, lots of imagination. She would have been great out here."

Tracy Jane
March 12th, 2006, 09:41 AM
"You don't mean that, Nick," comforted Hermione, now drawing him into a proper hug. "You'd never give up, we both know that, no matter how much you want to, you'd never do it."

The talk of seeing his family in the infirmary troubled her somewhat, but he had been through a lot and was only a one off. They really needed to sort something out because, at this rate, he'd be lucky to last the year with these stress levels.

"As for cadets... brilliant with lots of imagination? Exactly how does that remind you of Rowena?" she asked, only half jokingly. She pulled a face before continuing. "I'm sorry Nick, I just don't know what to do with her. Hell, I don't even know if there's anything I can do. It troubles me when I hear about these brilliant cadets who didn't make it, then I see Roma, one of the luckiest girls on Earth, just acting like it was some God given right."

She sighed. Why was she adding to his load? She was here to listen to him, not the other way round.

Gen Blue
March 12th, 2006, 10:11 AM
"It was so tempting, Min. To say 'Scr*w it. Not my problem.' But it is. I didn't have to take this assignment. I have enough time to retire." He snaked an arm around her waist and returned the hug with a quick squeeze, "The whole concept was so unbelievable. 'A new base' O'Neill tells me, 'On another planet'. Yeah, right Jack. I didn't believe until I actually walked through the Gate. Then, nothing would have kept me from taking this place. I had to bite my tongue not to tell Lizabet, she's a Sci-Fi nut."
Sitting up, Nick wiped his eyes and drank some more of his beer. "Clayton needs to see military life in the real world. You can't live on regulations alone. If I can get a CO to accept her, I'll send her on a mission. Do you think that will break the stick up her . . .,' he stopped, embarrassed at mentioning the cadet's common designation, "Sorry, Min. You had to have heard that."

Tracy Jane
March 12th, 2006, 10:28 AM
Hermione smiled. "My niece is the same, can't get enough. But she'd never believe you. Would say that she's too old for your pranks. That's the problem being the aunt or uncle, they always think you're pulling their leg."

She took another long drink from the can. Months without alcohol meant that just this tiny intake was making her lightheaded. She laughed at Nick's reference to Roma.

"Don't worry," Hermione said, grinning. "I've heard it all. People often don't catch on because of the surname, so subtlety goes to hell. Trust me, I've heard far worse than SuhA and her Academy nickname...the Ice Queen. Actually, I think she'd prefer those to Roma."

She removed her arm from around his waist and took off her glasses.

"Damn, they're filthy," she cursed. "Look, Nick... I know I probably don't seem like the best mother on the planet, but she is still my daughter, I still worry about her. Sending her on a mission might help things somewhat, but with this attitude, it might just get her killed."

Gen Blue
March 12th, 2006, 10:48 AM
Nick shifted on the cold rock. "No place is safe. Not even here. How many people did we lose? 35, counting the people on the Alarius. Sooner or later, she's going to have to go out. Attitude or not. Who knows, SG-7's 'attitude' might relax hers."
He tipped his head back and finished the last of his beer. "There's time. I'm not to the stage of sending . . . children out to die." And I never will be, I'll go out first.

(( I have to go soon. I'll be back on later, I hope. Feel free to start them back to base if you want. Bury the cans. No one else needs to find the stash. ))

Hermione nodded gratefully and finished what was left in her can. His tone worried her, like there was something left unsaid. But she'd find out at some point. Callista seemed to make sure of that.

Silently, she took the General's can and walked to the back of the cave. She quickly clawed a small hole in the damp ground, and buried the empty cans, crushing them before she did so.

As she walked back, she returned the remaining beers to their hiding place and then helped the man to his feet, noticing her now broken nail.

"The things I do for you, Nikolai Blue!" she exclaimed in a mocking tone. As he straightened up, she placed her hands on his upper arms and looked gravely into his eyes. "Nick, I'm serious. Take a break, just for a couple of days. I can make that an order if I have to."

The stand was further up, nestled in a bend of the waterway where nothing else would grow, due to the juglone produced by the plant serving to inhibit other plants, as well as providing a source of brown dye. 'But brown probably isn't a hair dye color Jaime wants, the more vibrant indigo, carmine, chica, and dibromoindigo are in the buds, the juglone's in the roots and I don't want to damage the root systems.' Jen kept hiking until she found the bend, the many flowers of all colors heavily populating the thin limbs.

Jim had crossed through the hangar without a hitch, nothing like last time.

He had decided his current attire was fine and was rather relaxed now.
He had decided it was time to get some exercise, to go for a jog.

Jim had never really been for a jog around the Alpha Site, nonetheless the area closer designated as Gaia.
Of course, Jim had seen the base layout map many times and the outdoors schematics.

Still, he had a few worries that he might get hopelessly lost.

That's why he had stopped off at the armoury (Ok, I know. But I didn’t want to do all those posts) and picked up a radio, and then at the commissary to grab a water bottle, as he knew he'd need it.

Jim picked the path he wanted to traverse and decided to start along it. He began at a slow and steady jog, having no one to race was actually quite relaxing for the most part.

He continued along the path at this pace for quite a while.

Jen knelt down at the edge of the large patch. She wasn't going to wade into the stand, having no desire to put rainbow-bright stains on her clothes. Crushing or damaging the flowers caused the dyes to ooze out.

Jen carefully grasped the base of a limb, twisting it around until it snapped off the parent planet. She did the same with two more, holding them carefully to avoid crushing the foliage until she had a mortar and pestle, preferably with a large mortar.

Jen headed back to the stream bank, slightly upstream from the stand of 'I. multiplia'. She picked a narrow stone from the stream bank, a bit thick for the job of a pestle, but here at hand.

'Now I need to hi-jack a non-porous bowl from Swanson and maybe some Mason jars.' Jen headed back upstream towards the spot where she had originally forded the stream.

At the ford, she crossed on the flat rocks, having to put more effort into her balance because the rocks were slightly submersed now. 'Water level went up. Hmm.' On the opposite bank, she shook the water off her boots and headed back toward base.

Jim panted heavily as he sat on a stump he had found after fifteen minutes of jogging.

Jim was leaning forward his legs spread apart and his hands in between them, his head hanging forward.

'Oh, God am I unfit. I need to do this more often.'
He lifted his head and pulled his water bottle up to his mouth, he pulled the catch open with his teeth and a slight motion with his right arm.

'Damn, ow. My arm's stiff again. Wonder if it will ever be the same.'
Jim took a rather large swig of water and closed the top back up with his left hand, and put it right back into his back pocket.

Jim pushed himself upwards with a small thrust of his legs and started off at a slower pace than last time. This has been his third stop.
He looked behind him at the stump he had stopped on.

It looked like lightning had hit that particular tree, it was all singed and burnt where it looked like the lightning had hit it.
However, the oddest part was. The tree was no where to be seen.

Jim shrugged it off and continued along the path, now wondering how long it went for.

March 16th, 2006, 08:08 PM
Jim had finished off the last of his water almost half a kilometer back, and was now finally reaching the end of the loop that the path took.

He was poised with a fork in the road sometime back, one direction lead deeper into Gaia, the other lead towards the base and back home again.

'Home. That's what the Alpha Site has become. Home.' Jim thought in his mind while jogging at an even pace.
Suddenly, the sunlight burst through the trees that had been blocking it all this time, and Jim was forced to squint.

However, surprisingly enough there were several clouds in the sky, especially for the amount of light there was.
Jim looked upwards for a moment, studying it. 'Now, that's odd. By all means it should be raining....But it isn't. Oh well.'

Jim then continued on a little more eager now, sinse he had finally regained some of his momentum he used to have out on the field, it had been to long for him sinse he'd been on a mission, despite the entire thing about the Ha'taks attacking.

Sinse the surgery, Jim had always had a feeling of stiffness, he had felt weaker, less stable. And he thought it had showed, allot.
The thing with the SF near his quarters....That was how Jim should have been. How he used to be. Take no comments from anyone kind of Colonel.

But alas, that had changed sinse the surgery, and sinse he'd met Kate.
'It's only been a couple of days, and look at me, I’m completely changed....Well, not completely. But I have changed some.'

Jim came up nearer to the Alpha Site Mountain and decided he'd make a detour, as a thought struck his mind.
He headed to the left and to an open patch of field where he could openly reach the morgue.

He slowed down to a walk and entered quietly, a bird chirped and the wind blew. But that was all there was to it.
Jim walked past several gravestones, several names he recognized and several he didn't.

He stopped in front of his teammates grave.
"Joseph Hanson. SG-7, may he RIP." It read.

Jim kneeled down and looked at it square on for a moment, making sure it was clean and clear of any weed that might have been growing around it.
He stood up and stood there for a few moments.

Jim wasn't a particularly religious man, and didn't know much about any passages from the bible, so that was out of the question.
So, instead, he simply spoke.

"Seph. You were one hell of a Doctor. You will never be forgotten, I can guarantee you that....Seph. I'm sorry. I should have gotten you to the Infirmary quicker...I should have kept the team together. This is all because of my inability to keep us together. We split up, all went out different ways and...Look what happened. Two of the bodies unaccounted for, and you lying here. In the ground. I am a complete S***house of a Commanding Officer."

Jim stood there, unwilling to cry. He had seemed to loose that ability as of late, maybe he had just done it to much.
Or maybe he was just angry at himself.

"May you Rest In Peace Joseph Hanson. You were the finest man of your professions on the base. Might have given Doctor Daniel Jackson a run for his money."

Jim nodded and unfolded his hands, which he had sub-consciously done.
He turned around and headed for the Alpha Site, now unsure of where to go.

He couldn't decide whether to visit Kate or not, however it had only been twenty minutes or so.
Instead he deided he'd stop at the Commissary and get something to eat and drink before he passed out from mal-nutrition.

Not really wanting to set either of the weapons down, Richard instead turned to his superior. "So, your choice sir, Sniper, or auto?" The young man grinned, beaming with excitement to get back in the saddle.

It was a beautiful day, blue sky, yellow sun. One might've mistaken it for earth if it weren't for the odd purple weed. Taking a deep breath of air Rich tightened his grip on his rifle slightly, scanning the far off targets in anticipation.

Ascended Times.2
March 17th, 2006, 11:00 PM
Jim saw the young man gripping his sniper rifle.
Jim was tempted to sigh but held it in, deciding for as neutral a look as he could muster.

"Let's try the rifle. I hope I just remember how the hell to fire this thing, I remember seeing some documentaries about it..."
Jim un-slung his M16A2 and lay it on the grass, and then un-slung his Springfield and put it to waist height.

Looking around for a decent patch of grass he walked over and lay down, propping up the sniper rifle.
'Now...Let's see. Let's go for the 750 target.' Jim thought to himself.

What he thought was a bird chirped, as Jim lined up the sight with his target.
'God DAMN this is hard...Gotta adjust for wind direction...Ok, this will be a test shot. See how far this thing falls short.'

He attempted to line it up, blocking out all other sound except his shallow intakes and exhales of breath.
'Don't F*** this up.' He thought.

His eye was a decent distance away from the scope, for obvious reasons.
He squeezed the trigger softly and let off the shot.

The ensuing noise was incredibly.
"AW, S*** SON OF A B****, F***, AARG! Ow, F***!!" Jim cursed as loud as he could, he hadn't stood up yet, he had just lost his aim and was covering his ears for a moment. After they had stopped ringing loudly, he leaned forward to check his shot.

'Idiot! You have damned earplugs you with!!!' Jim screeched in his mind.
He checked to see how far short he shot had, he saw this by a small pile of smoke lying between him and the target.
'Damn, only fifty meters short.'

However, at that, he reached into his pocket and put in earplugs.
'Ow. I'll regret that one...Damn, did they really fight with such loud guns?'

Wincing slightly at the loud torrent of curses, it took Richard several seconds to get back into the flow of things.

He carefully aimed for the 1000 target, slowing his breathing and heat rhythm. Letting out a deep breath he squeezed the trigger slowly, hitting the target on the second ring from the bulls eye.

'I must be slipping, normally planetary variances don't affect me this much.' "Mind if I try again sir? I seem to be a little off today."

Jim pulled back on the bolt and head the C-chunk-grind of the bolt being spit out and the new one being inserted in it's place.
Jim began to line up his sights and gave a quick glance towards his teammate.

The ringing hadn't completely subsided and he was still cursing himself for being such an idiot.

'God damn it, THINK next time, you could have damned near sent yourself deaf...Look at Richard, he's unaffected by it at all. That man must have ears of steel...'

Jim realised in the middle of his thought pattern that Richard was speaking.
He pulled out his earplugs and yelled "What!?"
Richard repeated the question and Jim nodded.

"Yeah, sure. But if you get another shot, so do I. Now that I know what this thing is like I will actually be able to hit the target..." Jim trailed off and began adjust his sights.

None of this painted on the glass crap they had in the new snipers. This thing was a classic example of 'Old School'

He looked through the scope and lined the sight up, however he wasn't quite finished yet.
He moved the sights upwards more and more before he was happy with it, he was aiming for the 1 kilometer marker, the same as Richard.

'Come on...One decent shot.' Jim made sure he had adjusted for the wind and continued to line it up.
Jim put his earplugs back in and cursed himself for not having proper earmuffs, the ones snipers were supposed to use.

'Damn Dean, gave me the loudest gun in existence and not a pair of earmuffs, damned good thing I brought these with me.'
Jim forced the thoughts out of his mind and concentrated, lining up the target.

He squeezed the trigger and let it the shot go.
The bullet sped towards its target at incredible speeds and actually hit it this time.

However, it was on the very rim of the target, and he was pretty sure the bullet had somehow hit the leg of it.
He pulled on the bolt and let the next bullet fly out.

He looked towards Richard for a moment and then towards his target.
'Your turn.' he thought to himself.

The crack of cordite was still echoing off the far hills when Richard started to line up the shot. Aiming just a bit higher to compensate for the drag, he squeezed off a round, smiling when it impacted less then an inch away from the bulls eye.

'I still got it.' One of the great things about the Stargate program was it taught you to adapt extremely quickly to almost any conditions. He turned to the older man and tapped his earmuffs, indicating that he wanted to speak by moving his lips.

Once the Jim complied, Richard spoke. "Whad'ya say we switch to automatics? I'd hate to embarrass you like this all day." The younger man grinned, being around these weapons brought out his confident side. He'd consider it a bad thing if he hadn't pulled so many situations out of the fire before. ((OOC On his last team. ((OOC: Not really...I pictured Jim as a hard arsed gun toting loony to begin with. Ah, how times change...))

Jim smiled as he pulled out earplugs and listed to Richard.
"Definitely. You've got me beat up down and sideways with this sniping thing. Now, automatics. There's my forte."

Jim put the spirngferiled on the ground after loading in the next bullet and picked up his M16A2.
He aimed at the automatic target and changed it to single shot.

Jim paused for a moment, confident he was going to hit the target with ease.
"Shame that there aren't any moving targets." he said, he was in his territory now, and he was enjoying it.

He let off single shot and the bullet went flying through the air.
Unlike the Springfield, the noise wasn't deafening and he was now firing shot after shot after shot at the target.

The targets was at 400 meters, WELL within the M16A2's maximum efficiency range of 550 meters.
Jim slung his M16A2 over his shoulder and picked up the Springfield and used the scope to see where he had hit.

"Heh. Four out of five bulls eye." Jim mumbled to himself, he put down the Springfield and picked up his M16A2 again, making sure it was comfortable and positioned well.

"Your turn Richard."
Jim noticed that Richard really seemed to be enjoying himself.
'Ah, some quality bonding time with a teammate. This is what it's about...I just hope Kate's all right...Yes. She is. Remember? The finest doctors of the Tau'ri are attending to her.'

Jims mind then skipped to the third and fourth members of his team.
'I wonder what Larry and the Cadet are up to...'
Jims mind trailed off as Richard lined up his shot.

Jim was tempted to pick up his Springfield and look at what the Lieutenant had managed to hit.

He decided against it when he saw Richard visibly droop and then remind him of Kate.
The mention of Kate however, put any comebacks he had in line and decided she was more important.

Jim nodded and turned the safety on his M16A2 back on and slung it over his shoulder.
He picked up the Springfield and it not having a safety, simply slung it over his shoulder.

"Well, I’m heading back to the armoury now. Nice shootin' with ya...I look forward to your abilities on the field. I trust you to have my six when the time comes."

Jim began to walk towards the Hangar and quickly un-slung his Springfield, he looked through the scope and made sure Richard wasn't looking.
Jim smirked as he saw how badly the Lieutenant had missed.

'Oh yeah, still got it.'
As quickly as he had un-slung it, he slung it over his shoulder once again and headed for the armoury.
Richard non-the-wiser Jim had seen his misses.

She picks up a ball and begins to act like she is really playing for a team.
She remembers how it was back on earth, when she was growing up with her brothers. They loved the game so much, and instilled that into her. Although she never was all that good, she always loved watching them play.
She spends about twenty min. playing than just sit down on the court thinking about things she could do around the base. I can see if the F302 need any work done, work in the labs helping them if they need it, just doing my daily work.

Deciding that being out side and playing balls is not as much fun as it used to be she head to the lounge.

As the three of them passed the base perimeter, Kate turned round and eyed both of the younger officers coldly. "We are going on a two click run, to Dobson's famous cave," she barked, replying to the Lieutenant's look of surprise with, "I wasn't born yesterday, you know." She put her hands on her hips and rocked her weight from foot to foot. "From there we will climb the hill, mountain, whatever you want to call it, and down the quarry to the other side. I'll direct you from there." She stopped rocking and looked from the surly Lieutenant to the frightened looking cadet. "Any questions?"

"Right, let's move out," barked Kate as she started to run, heading over the grass and the rocks, rather than the path, setting a steady pace, one that would be fairly fast for the younger officers with their heavy packs, but not too strenuous for her, despite the insistant pain in her thighs. 'Really shouldn't have done that,' she thought, the pain a constant reminder of her hypocracy.

She looked beside her at Rowena who was ploughing on, a look of steely determination on her face. As she looked up, she barked to Kate.

"Ma'am. Aren't... we... heading... too... far... north? We'll... miss... the... stepping... stones."

Kate carried on, her legs still aching. "Yes. We're going in. Deepest part. Going for a swim."

They ran onwards towards the winding river.

Richard focused on the ground, the pack was already becoming very heavy and they had quite a long way to go. He realized the Major and the Cadet were talking, but only caught the end of the conversation. 'Swim? With these packs? Anderson must be one hell of a good lay, she's lost her d*** mind!' He sighed and went back to focusing on the ground rushing past them, almost getting lost in his thoughts.

A ways later the Major started to slow, and Richard realized they must have been getting close. He stopped at the bank of the river, thankful for the rest, but reluctant about crossing. He looked at Kate in askance.

Kate sat down on the muddy bank and eased herself into the icy water. Well this ought to calm him down somewhat. As she let go of the bank, her head went under the water and fer feet touched the bottom. She used her strong arms to pull herself back to the surface and tread water for a moment.

"Dobson, you should be able to walk this one, just about. Clayton, you're gonna have to swim it," she said. "Current's not too bad if you concentrate." She looked at Richard's look of disbelief. "Teamwork, Lieutenant. That's how you get the packs across."

She swam to the other side and hauled herself out of the water, sitting quietly on the muddy bank as she waited for the younger officers to come up with a solution.

"Well this outta be fun. “He glanced around. 'Not enough rocks for a ford' "Rowena, take your pack off, look for anything buoyant, and some rope if it's there." The cadet went to work, ruffling through her pack. Richard sighed as he worked the heavy burden off his back, before braking off branches from a nearby tree. He walked back to the river and dropped one of the branches in, he'd hate to spend all that time making a raft, and find out Gaian wood didn't float. After he was satisfied such a raft would work, he went bck into the forest, and started collecting a pile of sticks to build the raft. Suddenly he spied a large log laying by one of the trees, he smiled as he went to pick it up, only to be dismayed when what he assumed were gaian termites became rather irked at his moving their home and swarmed out.

He emerged from the forest with several more branches and looked over at Rowena, smiling when he noticed she had found some high-tension wire. He separated the sticks into two piles of roughly the same mass. "Alright, we're going to make two pontoons, then lash them together, you work on those, i'll work on these." After several minutes of what he was she was wonderful entertainment from the major, they where ready. "You swim across first, I'll throw you a vine, then I'll hook it to the raft and we'll guide the first pack across. Then we return the raft and do it again." He smiled, rather content with himself.

"Why didn't we hook up the high tension wire instead of using it all on the raft? Then we wouldn't of had to use a vine." He frowned. "Because I'm an idiot and this was a plan in progress, now swim across the river and wait for me to throw you the vine." She gave him a look, but set out across the river anyway. Watching skeptically as he located a vine and prepared the raft. Fifteen minutes and one slightly submerged pack later, they were done and Richard now had to deal with a water-logged 25KG pack.

Tracy Jane
April 3rd, 2006, 02:03 AM
Kate sat and watched, highly amused by the officer's antics, as they built the raft and eventually got across with their packs. She was impressed that they had come up with the idea, thinking on their feet, but it was what they needed to do if they were going to be let out into the field.

Everyone safely on this bank, she chivvied them into getting their packs back on. She realised that the bags were slightly wet, and that the officers would regret that later, when they realised what she had in store for them.

Setting the pace, Kate started to run again, the short distance between the river and the rocky hill, where she began to climb, calling to the officers below to hurry up behind her. As they reached the top, Kate allowed them a few minutes rest, catching Rowena glancing in disappointment at Richard's now much lesser problem.

It took a couple of minutes to persuade the officers to continue, exhausted as they were, but it had only been two clicks, and they had to face much worse off world, with heavier loads than they had now, on worse terrain and at a faster pace. She wasn't going to go easy on them.

Down the rocky quarry face, to a part of the planet that few ventured out into, Kate kept jogging into the forest, followed by her teammates. "Not... far... now!" she called to them as she ran.

Several minutes later and Kate stopped in a small wooded clearing and sat down. "Here we go, kids. Make yourself at home."

Richard knew it was a lame joke but was too exhausted to care, he wiggled his way out of the pack, allowing it to fall to the ground before joining it. He fleetingly glanced at Rowena, frowning at the fact that she was wearing a jacket. 'Cruel fate I suppose.' "So, why did you drag us out to this godforsaken place? And what's with the weapons?" Richard asked in a disinterested tone, belying his true curiosity.

"I know, Rowena."

"But it's only a two man tent..." she continued.

Kate nodded. "I'm aware of that, thank you, cadet."

"But there are three of-"

"I'm going back to base," interrupted Kate with a sigh. "You two are going to stay out here and get whatever this is out of your systems, away from the base, away from the General, and away from your mother. Is that clear?"

Rowena nodded. "Yes, Ma'am."

"You'll return tomorrow morning and report to me, and we'll hear no more of this nonsense on duty, do you hear?" she asked sternly.

"Yes, Ma'am," replied Rowena once more.

"If the General asks, you're doing your survival training. If the Colonel asks, then remind him of the birthmark on his... on second thoughts..." she smiled and tossed Richard the zat. "You're not supposed to leave the base unarmed. That's for you. See you tomorrow, and have fun."
