Movie, hmm... LOTR?

Heck, I don't even really have a favorite movie at all. Only Requiem for a Dream is up there :)

Btw, does Cube count as sci-fi?

The Matrix Trilogy is my favorite sci-fi film(s).

Cube: Hypercube wasn't good at all. It removed the feeling of the old Cube, and the characters weren't as interesting

Cube (The original) was really cool. I had wanted to see the sequel but never got around to it.

I had wanted to see the sequel but never got around to it.

The cube itself was cool. But the charcters, plot, and dialouge was bad. They need to make a CuBE3, which incorporates the first movies characters, and the second movie's cube. That would be awesome.

And Cube Zero is cube3 =)

There's probably a nude scene or something like that. Underworld was a cool movie, yes, they did talk a bit too much, but it set the storyline quite well.

The sequels to Underworld should be good, if they are terrible it could wreck the original for me.

It should be shown to all schoolkids, so that they'll never test drugs.

Bringing this thread back up because I just added it to my long favorites list.

Equilibrium.

I know it's been out for a year or two, but I'd never heard of it before. I had the tv on for background noise & found myself getting sucked into it. (A good movie on Showtime - imagine my shock! )

I think despite the drug he did love his wife & Mary reminded him of her. Christian Bale did a great job being subtle on the emotions.

I think with a little more money that movie could have been a hit. And Christian Bale's not too bad to look at either. ;) I read he's the next Batman.

Well, I like all the LOR movies.

A pre-teen movie I've always liked was/is Earth Star Voyager that was on Disney's Sunday Night at the MOvies. Took 2 Sundays. I taped it off the air and now that tape is starting to go bad....Can't seem to talk Disney into re-releasing it. RATS!!! Has anyone else watched this movie?

Galaxy Quest...

I've watched and enjoyed so many and my hubby is a big Sci-Fi B-movie aficionado so I get those as well!

I really love the Lord of the Rings-trilogy, but then again so does half the planet (at least judging by the ticket sales).

I thought that the original Matrix movie was a work of wonder, but then the other two came along and totally messed things up. I tend to block those out of my mind.

Galaxy Quest is a hoot and a half and I especially adore Alan Rickman in that one.

Oh, I know! Contact. I really liked that movie, thought that Jodie Foster was most excellent.

What was Blade Runner about, my friend keeps saying its a good movie, but i never knew what it was about.

Basically it's about a group of robots that escape and come back to earth. Harrison Ford plays a detective (a Blade Runner) who's job it is to hunt them down.

The premise is that robots (almost indestingushable from humans) are used on the colonies as cheap labor and they have an artificially limited lifespan (I think it was something like 5 years). On Earth robots are not allowed.

I'm not going to say anything more since I'd risk spoiling the movie. Let me just say that it is a must see movie.

12 Monkeys is a pretty good film. I like the way that it was done, it was different and therefore was much better than Outbreak or something similar.

While both Outbreak and 12 Monkeys have 'a deadly plague' that is about it. Outbreak was actually about the virus or whatever and containing it. 12 Monkeys is a time travel movie that deals with the nature of reality and how we percive it. It's a bit of an apple and oranges comparison there.

On their own merits however 12 Monkeys is a great movie and Outbreak is not.

I really hated Outbreak, it is still ok as a late night movie filler, but the storyline and actors in it did not seem to work IMO.

It has been a long time since I saw either of these films, so memory is a bit rusty on them.

I'm not really into the Sword&Sorcery style of fantasy. I like science fiction because, when it is true to its genre, its basis is on actual science or science theory and examines plausible consequences for humanity.

Having just seen Hero (Yimou Zhang), I have to say that this is the best fantasy movie I've ever watched.

The cinematography is matchless(IMO) and the story is solid and told in a refreshingly different way. It is based on true historical figures, places and culture, making the movie more of a Historical Romance/Fantasy than Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

If you haven't seen it, go. Now. :)

Favorite SciFi Movie

Dipping back into the well of time here...but my favorite scifi movie is the original "The Thing" [from Another World] from 1951. Fantastic flick. Great casting (Dewey Martin - yum), wonderful dialog, and a nifty plot.

It was one of the first non-Disney movies my grandparents allowed me to see back in the '50's. I had been reading science fiction for several years, and this movie was (and still is) the cats pajamas.

TRON rules all. It's way underrated and far better than the crass commercialism that inspired it would suggest.

Speaking of Disney, I'm partial to his 1957 version of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea which, despite some lingering silliness, is a faithful and intense adaptation of the book.

The original Terminator. It's dark and dystopian: just the way I like it.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I remember enjoying THX-1138 when it came on television. The new DVD is in the mail now, so I'll refine my opinion when it arrives.

Big Trouble in Little China is supremely bizarre fantasy, good-natured and instantly quotable.

To address some of the other movies discussed in this thread, I tried to sit down and watch Blade Runner but after 30 minutes of absolutely nothing happening on screen except for some cool futuristic cityscapes drifting by, I got bored and wandered off (and I usually enjoy movies that other people consider long and boring).

Donnie Darko is good when it sticks to the sci-fi concepts at its roots. When it drifts off into teen angst territory, a lot of goodwill from this viewer is squandered.

Favorite Fantasy : LOTR Trilogy followed by Star Wars Trilogy (IV, etc.)
Favorite Sci-fi: That’s a little harder. I can’t put a finger on just one at the moment so here are a couple: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Abyss, Contact, Aliens, Terminator 2.

Here are some other sci-fi and/or fantasy movies that I really like in the general order of their release.

The Time Machine (original)
Mad Max
The Final Countdown (Thanks joshing123 for reminding me of that one)
E.T.
Wargames
The Terminator
The Last Starfighter
Gremlins
Ladyhawke
Flight of the Navigator
Maximum Overdrive (the original)
Edward Scissorhands
Groundhog Day
Jurassic Park
Stargate
Independence Day
Star Trek: First Contact
Gattaca
Men in Black (I want my money back for MIB 2)
The X-Files: Fight the Future
Galaxy Quest

hhmmmm....metropolis (without the sad rock score)

star wars..nothing like sitting in the cinema, seeing that first ship fly over and going 'woah, that's impressive'..then the REALLY big ship flies overhead...

time bandits..need i explain why? god is ralph richardson..and sean connery as a greek hero and a fireman. plus bizarre plot i still don't fully understand, but i don't care

princess bride..so funny, yet so romantic (actually, pirates of the carribbean too)

does signs count? despite what sam said about it, it scared the crap out of me.

independence day...yay, lets go for the big bucks, super spectacular movie that blows up the white house! plus it was orginally going to be the sequel to stargate

bladerunner. directors cut. deckard is so a replicant (or is it a replicator?)

and jason and the argonauts. those skeletons gave me nightmares for years (and ray harryhausen was so pleased when i told him that)

i left out lord of the rings and harry potter cos, well, they're kind of a given, aren't they? but it's extended versions of LOTR i enjoy most...ten extra minutes of boromir in TT, giving of the gifts by galadriel in FOTR. can't wait to see what's extra in ROTK

There are a ton of movies that I really enjoy. Star Wars: A New Hope, Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi are probably the highest on the list, although Stargate, Minority Report, The Matrix, Solaris, Dune, Alien, Pitch Black and The Abyss are there as well.

To... many... choices...
