Cause I know I am, the Mini Series "event" was accualy pretty decent all around, modernized BG but keep the story pretty much square with the consept of the original. I think the TV series is going to be excelent too, some say that "Ships in Space" have been done to death, well I disagree, I still there theres room for good Ships in Space shows.
Also it'll be nice to have more Sci-Fi on the Sci-Fi channel.

I'm sort of looking forward to it, but I don't expect it to be on Australian TV any time soon. :)

I'm looking forward to it. I was barely born when the first series aired so I don't really have a basis for comparison, which I think is a good thing since I've read alot about how it's not true to the series. I liked the mini-series quite a bit. There's a serious shortage of good sci-fi series out there (Stargate being the exeption of course) so I hope it makes the grade.

I'm also looking forward to it. I didn't think the miniseries was perfect but I ended up enjoying it quite a bit and think the concept has a lot of potential for a good series. I never saw the original series so I have no expectations to be dashed.
Stargate Atlantis starts up this week, then the Farscape miniseries in October and Battlestar Galactica in January. It's nice to see the Scifi channel showing...well....more scifi. :D

The mini-series was pretty damn cool. It just dragged a little. That's probably cause I watched it all in one sitting on DVD. :)

Wow, i could never watch a whole mini-series in one sitting, haha...

Oh, it was a mini-series, was it? I thought it was a film. I'd wondered why they made it so long.
It was great. I thought Starbuck was super, and I really liked... what was his name, Apollo's dad? The ending was a real shock, I really want to find out what happens next.
Has anyone here seen the original? Was the plot roughly the same, or an exact rehash, or only 'loosely based'?

I habe seen the orginal sereis. I also did see the mini. The mini is roughly the same as the first three hours of the OTS. I am auxiously waiting for the new series to come to Scifi.

I haven't seen this incarnation but I am familiar with the original... which I liked quite a bit. I think this new version has enough elements of its own to be quite distinct from the original, which is why I don't get they put the same name on it. Oh well, when in doubt: MULTIVERSE :)

The newer version was much deeper in the human conflicts of the people, especially between Admana and Apollo. The conflict between them was not in the OTS. By the way, the new one does have elements to be one its own.
But would you watch it if is was called something else?

If it was called something else it would have been dubbed a "Battlestar Rip off" and lost potencial veiws.
Calling it Battlestar Galactica A) Gives it name reconition, B) Draws in the older original veiwers, and C) has a metric ass ton of unused potencial to draw on

I truly agree with that.

Yes, I agree... marketing... taking the name of something previously well-known and bringing it to a new audience, with only being a remake in *some* ways.
But like you said, Madeleine... human conflicts, I'm all for that. Although I'm not sure what to think of a humanform Cylon yet -- I'm going to have to get my head wrapped around that one :D

Battlestar Galactica was a mini-series on the Scifi channel. I was four hours long and over two nights. I watched it over those two nights.

Being a huge fan of the original series I have mixed feelings about the show.
It is a re-imagining of the original series based in that universe.
I like the new starbuck, though she is a annoyingly combative at times. Edward James Olmos (adama) is always good.
The scenes are certainly more visceral in this new one, than the original(probably more a result of the time the original aired) which is good.
This take is ok, and I will watch, certainly, but it would have been so nice to revisit the original story line, (Galactica 1980 DOES NOT count).
This may rob effort that could have gone into picking up the original story and tying up those threads.
What I would REALLY Like is a release of this new Glalactica's musical score on CD. I love that music. Good stuff.
I like the new cylon baseships, and enjoyed the homages to the original series in the diplomat's briefing material he shuffled through at the very beginning.

No true BSG counts the series were they found Earth. I mean....they did cut out like what 4 main characters?
I really like this new one compared to the old school one. I though the old school had a great idea, and was really portrayed in a comical way. This new one though, its set during the same time, has alot more drama, and feeling to it. In the middle of a war time crisis, you aren't gunna go kiss some chick on the lips(Starbuck), you're gunna suit up and get ready to be launched out in your viper.
BSG(N) has a 10/10 in my book.

When I first heard that this series was being made I was pretty excited. I watched the original series when I was a kid and loved it. I have taped the episodes since then from the Sci-Fi channel and still enjoy them, though I have to admit they are a lot more hokey than I remembered being originally.
That being said, whenever I heard that both Starbuck and Boomer were being cast as women I was fairly scandalized and was ready just to refuse to watch the mini-series period. However, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I enjoyed it, though I still had a hard time dealing with Starbuck. Not because the character was a woman, but just because of how different the character was from the original that I loved so much.
Another thing that bothered me was that the Cylons’ appearance was different that the original series. They were what made the series so neat to me when I was younger. Overall though, the acting was definitely several notches higher than the original series and the story itself is a lot more gritty than the original, which makes me really look forward to the series coming out next year.

The preview said Earth was destroyed, so how can they find home if it doesn't exist anymore? Besides, it's not the story that I found depressing, but the way the preview depicted it, everyone always living in the dark, no one smiled, they talked as if they were all real sad... I dunno, it just seemed depressing. Perhaps it as a poor preview? Personally, I prefer two kinds of sci-fi, one set on present-day Earth or which characters from present-day Earth and then the kind of exciting, possitive sci-fi set in the near or distant future. Basically, the bright/possitive Star Trek/Stargate style of sci-fi is more my speed.
So, those of you whom are BG fans, what's the appeal?

I've only watched the new mini-series and you're right about it being dark, but it's well written and entertaining. There planets have been destroyed, but no Earth. Earth in the mini-series is a legend that no one knows for sure really exists. :)

umm....well...the story is suposedly that 'Earth' they lived on...and other 7(?) planets....that were destroyed by Cyclones, is not real Earth...Earht is a 8th colony on the far side of the galaxy with last humans, untouched by Cyclones, that's like a legend, and they will try to get to it....but then agian...the government....just supports this hope so ppl don't coming suicide...etc...they don't believe in Earth themselves....kinda confusing huh?

I think it's Cylons, as in "Cylon & Garfunkel" (Futurama reference :) ), not Cyclone :D Cyclonus is an evil Decepticon from the Transformers. But yeah.
I only saw the original Battlestar Galactica series. I don't know if the new one is based as heavy on Mormon symbols and beliefs like the original, but it made for some wild sci-fi storytelling, that's for sure.

I enjoyed the original Battlestar Galactica, and enjoyed the updated version equally. I guess re-makes are the rage now-a-days (1960 Oceans Eleven, 2001 version, 1962 Mancherian Candidate 2004 version). You just have to judge each show individually, and not try to compair the two. In some cases, there really isn't a reason to do a re-make, but I think with BG, there is. The original, being on network TV, didn't have a real chance at a long run. Maybe this time, Sci-Fi will be able to keep it around for six or seven seasons. I'd like that.

Earth was never destroyed. There were originally 12 colonies of Cobalt. Earth is the "13th" aka the Lost Tribe and Humanity's Last Hope. Not 8 or 7 or 21....13.

That's right, DFA. In both, the orginal and the new, they never said it was destoryed, that's why they are going to try and find the Earth.

You kinda got it right. But the way you depectied would make it a sci-fi show about nothing. And that never works.
