If you haven't seen the movie, and /or don't know the ending , leave now.
There are two things I believe evrybody should do about WW-II:
Read the Dairy of Anne Frank
See Das Boot
To begin with, I feel real conflicted about this movie.
I'm Dutch and my mind tells me I should be against the sub.
But the thing is, this movie puncutres right through all your precomseptions.
It reminds you of the fact that the Germans were /are humans too and rubs it in.
Which I think is why it's such a good movie.

The first point leads to second.
Manely, the ending sucks.
They make it through the entire hellish patrol, and what happens in the end.
U-96 docks and gets bombed to pieces.
After all they've been through trying to get home, most of them die on land.
What do you think about this movie ?

This is the movie about a german submarine? Believe someone at my school called this nazi propaganda. Most say it's really good though, I just haven't had the urge to see it yet.

Quite Excellent. A masterpiece. The characters are Human and Real. The events accurately capture the sailor's lives. Gritty and horrifying when necessary.
As for Nazi propaganda, not in the least. They officers clearly looked down upon Hitler and the Party. Their duty was to the Navy.
In fact, on the boat's intercom, they often played "Tipperary".
Get the original extended German TV Miniseries version. Outstanding.
I recently acquired this with the Dolby 5.1 remastering of the soundtrack.
I love it.
"...It's a long way to Tipperary
It's a long way to go
It's a long way to Tipperary
To the sweetest girl I know
Goodbye Piccadilly
And farewell Leicester Square
It's a long, long way to Tipperary
But my heart is right there..."

And the Nazis wouldnn't have written the ending this way.
They would have had the last scenes being the a glorious reception of the submarine.
Plus, don't forget the scene where Johan goes insane.

Originally, it was a TV mini-series, and a few years ago, it was released in the theaters as Director's Cut. I watched Titanic right before I watched this movie for the first time. IMO Titanic is/was much overrated.
I even bought the book, on which the movie is based. Pretty good stuff.
Believe someone at my school called this nazi propaganda.
They don't know what they're talking about. It's like saying "Apocalypse Now" is promoting the Vietnam War in a positive light. Yeah right.
Actually, who liked "Apocalypse Now" would probably like "Das Boot" as well. "A N Redux" is in my Top 5 list, and I must have watched the "Das Boot"-mini-series about three or four times by now.

All that overdone emotional stuff, how American !
Leonardo DiCaprio..bleh !!!
I know I'm not suppossed to say this, but I was happy when this 'Jack' was blub-blub-blub.
There's only one Jack and that's Jack O'Neill ! ;)

Saw Das Boot at least three times. It's one of my favorite submarine movies.
I thought that the ending was kind of predictable, like you said Janus, after seeing them get through all that I just knew they would die on land/when docked
