    It's Official: Craig's 007

As expected, English actor Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) was announced as the new James Bond on Oct. 14 in a news conference in London, ending months of speculation over who would take over from Pierce Brosnan as 007, the Reuters news service reported.

The 37-year-old actor swept up the River Thames on a power launch to a news conference, escorted by Royal Marines boats, the news service reported. Craig will become the first blond Bond and told reporters: "I'm kind of speechless at the moment."

The casting of one of cinema's most iconic characters closes the successful four-film run of Irishman Brosnan. Craig will make his debut as the martini-swilling superspy in Casino Royale, the 21st Bond film, which starts shooting in January.

Craig's hiring ends months of speculation about who would replace Brosnan. Candidates included Britons Clive Owen and Jude Law, Australia's Hugh Jackman and TV's Goran Visnjic.

Only five actors have played Bond since the first film, Dr. No, more than 40 years ago. Brosnan, Sean Connery and Roger Moore were well-loved mainstays as the secret agent, while George Lazenby and Timothy Dalton were less successful.

    (From BBC)
"He has also said, before the announcement was made, that he would want to bring more "emotional depth to the character".

"I'd like to see it go back to the books. I think they (the films) need to be dirtier."

I'm pretty excited; I think he's definetly going to make the series darker

I've never heard of him, which isn't all that surprising 'cause I don't pay much attention. I'm pretty excited that they want to go back more to the books, but I still think I'm gonna miss Pierce. He was just so cool! Looking forward to the new one though!

I´m not sure that Craig is the right guy for the job. I am however glad they went with an unknown, it makes is so much easier to accept him as James Bond.

I´ll reserve further comments until I see the next Bond movie

I think most of the former Bonds were unknowns (this one known Bond was Pierce Brosnan).

Wished Pierce Brosnan could have done one more....and Clive Owen would've been better IMHO.

I trust EON (not as much as I did before Die Another Day, though) , and if they believe that Daniel Craig is the best man for the job, then I'm willing to line up an see Casino Royale in the cinemas and give the film a fair go.
Considering the direction they want to go with Casino Royale and any subsequent films, I'm kinda excited. Not Serenity excited, mind you, but excited none the less.

                    Quoted from IGN.com FilmForce:

                    Blond, James Blond
Craig confirmed, first pic & official site live!

October 14, 2005 - After one of the most publicized casting processes in film history, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Eon Productions formally announced today in London that, as early reports suggested, English actor Daniel Craig has been cast as the sixth big-screen James Bond, succeeding Pierce Brosnan in the role. (Ironically, today also marks the 78th birthday of ex-007 Roger Moore.)

Craig will portray agent 007 in the next installment of the forty-odd year-old franchise, Casino Royale, to be directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye). The film will be produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

According to Reuters, "in typically flamboyant 007 style, (Craig) swept up the River Thames on a power launch to a news conference, escorted by Royal Marines boats."

"I'm kind of speechless at the moment," Craig informed reporters at the London press conference, held aboard the HMS President by the river Thames. "It hasn't really sunk in yet. It's a huge responsibility but also a huge challenge and adventure." Craig was dressed in a dapper blue suit and red tie befitting the well-tailored James Bond.

"I've just got to step up to the plate and deal with it," Craig said, adding, "Together with Martin, I just want to make the best film I can. It's not a question of redefining, but taking it somewhere it's never gone before."

Some video from the conference can be seen [at IGN FilmForce].

The 37-year-old Craig is almost a decade older than what the filmmakers had stated they were looking for in a new James Bond. Casino Royale will chronicle a younger, less seasoned Bond's early mission as a 00 agent in her majesty's secret service. The filmmakers confirmed that the current script will only bring back Bond's supervisor, M, but not gadget master Q or Miss Moneypenny.

Sony has issued the first photo of Craig in character, although the actor said his hair might not be that dark in the film.

"Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role," Broccoli and Campbell said in a statement. Sony chief Amy Pascal added, "We believe that in Daniel Craig we have found the ideal 21st century Bond and we couldn't be more privileged to be working with Barbara and Michael, who are tireless champions and guardians of the James Bond legacy."

The new official film site has been launched and can be found here.

Also unveiled at the press conference was the new logo for Casino Royale, which can be seen at JamesBond.com.

Veteran Bond movie scribes Neal Purvis & Robert Wade penned the initial drafts of the screenplay adaptation of Ian Fleming's first Bond novel. Oscar nominee Paul Haggis recently polished their script.

Casino Royale is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

Furthermore, Wilson also revealed that work is already underway on the follow-up to Casino Royale!

Daniel Craig's screen credits include Layer Cake, Road to Perdition, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Sylvia and Enduring Love.

The last several Bond movies were almost on par w/ Batman and Robin, not the characters; I'm talking about the worst Batman movie ever made. The last several Bond movies were almost comic book stupid and completly unwatchable. Goldeneye was the last good Bond movie and Pierce Brosnan was wasted on the next three movies. Now he's out of his prime and ready for a replacement.

I hated seeing VERY well known Bond girls too; Denise Richards as "Christmas," or Halle Berry as "Jinx." ...Puke. In Goldeneye, the girls was an unknown, and very exotic. Also, the sooner they get rid of Moneypenney and Q, the sooner they start making the series a serious spy drama with cutting edge tech. and stop focusing on comic book hijinx.

I don't think he really looks the part... I'm kind of disappointed...

No Moneypenny or Q? What the hell? I knew it, the news gets worse...

And I gotta agree about Goldeneye. It's my favorite James Bond movie. I don't really care much for those after it... Die Another Day was kind of stupid...

I think he's an interesting choice. He certainly looks the part in that one photo White Knight posted. Don't think I'll miss Moneypenny or Q much...hmm...Q maybe. I thought he was funny.

I haven't seen much of Craig's acting so I think I'll reserve further judgement for now.

I am really disappointed I was expecting someone a bit younger, we will have to wait and see how it turns out when the movie comes out but so far I’m not thrilled about it.
