Craig Closing In On 007?
Rumors are circling in the U.K. that Daniel Craig (Layer Cake) has emerged as the new favorite to replace Pierce Brosnan as the latest James Bond, although no official announcement has been made, the Reuters news service reported. The Daily Mail reported that Craig, who would be the first "blond Bond," underwent a screen test in a tuxedo and impressed the producers. British bookmaker William Hill closed wagers on Bond after bettors rushed to back Craig in the wake of the report, Reuters said.
Other names reportedly in the running have included Clive Owen, Jude Law, Hugh Jackman and Goran Visnjic. With shooting of the 21st Bond film, Casino Royale, due to begin in January, speculation has only intensified. A delay in announcing the casting has been portrayed as a crisis that could cause costly production delays, the news service reported. Neither Craig's representatives nor Sony Pictures, which owns the rights to the Bond franchise, commented on the rumors. An official announcement is expected later this week.
