    Sci Fi's `Stargate SG-1' Emerges From A Deep Freeze
    July 9, 2004

When the seventh season of "Stargate SG-1" (Sci Fi, 9 p.m.) ended, Col. Jack O'Neill was cryogenically frozen in his effort to save Earth. As the eighth season of the Sci Fi channel's most popular series begins, the question is: Can he get out of this fix?

Are you kidding? He's portrayed by Richard Dean Anderson, the old star of "MacGyver" who is about the only name in the show.

It will take some time, though, and they've got a lot of time to play with in the two-hour season premiere. By the end, the stage is set for a new story line, with the former anti-authority O'Neill now the main authority of the Stargate system as new brigadier general. Moving up to lieutenant colonel is Amanda Tapping's Maj. Samantha Carter.

There is an adjustment to be made too for the offshoot series, starting next Friday with its own two-hour premiere, "Stargate Atlantis."
