View Full Version : X-treme Guide to GateWorld (for newbies)

ShadowMaat
September 30th, 2005, 02:13 PM
There are a LOT of questions that get asked repetitively by newbies which aren't covered by the FAQ (http://forum.gateworld.net/faq.php).

Note: various levels are subject to change without notice.

POST COUNT

Q: How come my post count isn't going up?

Posts made in Off Topic don't count.

Q: What are the user levels?

0-24: Probie
25-49: Airman
50 -99: Staff Sergeant
100-249: Chief Master Sergeant
250-499: Second Lieutenant
500-999: First Lieutenant
1000-1999: Captain
2000-2999: Major
3000-4999: Lieutenant Colonel
5000-7999: Colonel
8000-9999: Brigadier General
10000-14999: Major General
15000-19999: Lieutenant General
20000-49999: General
50000+: Air Force Chief of Staff

Q: I've seen other ranks, too! When do I become a Prior/Forum Goddess?

You don't. Not by post count, anyway. Those are special titles created just for the staff. A few others have unique titles, as well, which aren't attainable by the general populace. Which means, sorry, there's no way for you to become an Executive Producer just by posting here at Gateworld.

Q: How does my post count affect my status on Gateworld?

Post count is tied into your user level and your avatar level, neither of which makes your actual posts any more or less interesting. As the saying goes, "Stop worrying about your post count and just make your posts count."

REPUTATION

Q: What is "reputation?"

Reputation is a user-based rating system. It's an informal and supposedly fun way to "reward" people based on your opinion of their posts. You grant rep by clicking on the Star icon located next to a person's post.
You can view your own rep by looking under "My Controls". Or, if you have the feature turned off, go into "edit options" and click the box for "show my reputation level".

Q: What are good/bad things to give rep for?
There are no hard and fast rules for granting rep. Generally speaking, however, it's considered bad manners to "reward" people simply because they agree with you. Remember to try and judge the value based on the content of the post itself, not the opinion and not the opinion-holder.

Posts that you find helpful, thought-provoking, funny, or generally interesting would all be good candidates for positive rep. And remember that these are only guidelines, though, not rules. No one can force you to "toe the line" and you can't force others to do it, either.

Q: If green means positive rep what do gray squares mean?

It means the person giving you rep is too new and/or has too low a reputation for their rep to affect your rep. I believe that "active" rep kicks in around your 50th post (when you're Jaffa Fodder). a gray rep will always be gray- like a leopard, rep doesn't change its spots.

Q: I know that my rep is viewable under "My Controls" but is there a way to see the rep I've given to other people?

Other than keeping a record of it yourself? No.
*Update to vbb : Look inside your control panel. You'll see the latest reps listed that you've both given to others and recieved ,and also see your own "Rep -giving power".

Q: What are the rep levels and how do you find them?

If you hold your mouse over your (or anyone's) reputation blocks, a small box pops up describing the rep level. It's been a while since I've paid attention to this, myself, so I'll let someone else correct my mistakes and provide any specific rep numbers required, but here's what I could find:

... is an up-and-coming trainee.
...is being considered to join the Stargate program.
...just got transferred to Stargate Command.
...is a back-up SG-team member.
...is a permanent member of an SG-team.
...is a popular officer at Stargate Command.
...has their pick of any assignment at the S.G.C.
...is an SG-team leader!
...is commander of SG-1!
...is in charge at Stargate Command!
...is top brass at Homeworld Security.
...has a Daedalus-class battle cruiser named after them.
...has ascended to a higher plane of existence. So long, mortals !
...is a server in the Ascended Diner.
...is a Host/Hostess in the Ascended Diner.
...is head chef at the Ascended Diner
...is the manager of the Ascended Diner
...uses Ascended Beings as icing on their cake

...??? [still a mystery]

On the negative side (Gateworld no longer allows the granting of negative rep), you have:

...has to retake the Academy entrance exam.
...has been reassigned to the basement of Area 51.
...has been suspended from active duty.
...has been dishonourably discharged.

Q: How many points are reps worth?

Initially, once your "active" rep kicks in [at around 50 posts], your rep granting abilities equal one point. As your reputation climbs (and as you grant more rep, yourself), the point level increases. There is no clear-cut formula to determine whose reps count for how much.

Q: How many points do I have to get in order to get another rep block?

When you join Gateworld, you start off with 12 points and one green block. Once you pass the 100 point mark, you'll get a second square. Initially, each block represents 100 rep points. After the first four (I think), it becomes 200 points per block and the levels become progressively higher until you max out at 11 squares. I'm not sure how many points it takes get get from the 10th square to the 11th one, but I think it's around 500.

Q: How come some blocks are a lighter green?

I think it's a stylistic thing. It takes more points to get them and it helps them stand out a bit more.

Q: What are jello blocks and why are some of them radioactive? Will they make me sick??

"Jello block" is just another way to refer to rep squares/blocks and along as you don't eat them, you should be fine. Jello (AKA "jelly" in some parts of the world) is considered to be a Stargate in-reference since the food puts in occasional appearances on the show (although usually it's blue or red). "Radioactive" jello squares aren't actually radioactive, it's just a way to differentiate the lighter or "glowing" ones. As for why they're radioactive rather than ascended, well, ascended jello wouldn't be nearly as tasty.

Q: How does my rep level affect my status on Gateworld?

It doesn't. Reputation is utterly meaningless. It doesn't get you any special privileges and (again) it doesn't make your posts any more or less interesting. People who have their rep display turned off have a gray box.

AVATARS

Q: I want to upload my own avatar. Why isn't it working?

Uploading unique/personal avatars will become available after you reach a certain number of posts (currently it's around 2000, but Darren changes the number once in a while). This is a way of showing appreciation to long-term posters and it's also to encourage people to stick around.

MISCELLANEOUS

Q: How do I become a moderator? Can I be one? Huh?? Huh?? Can I?? How many posts does it take??

Gateworld is not seeking to add any more Moderators at this point in time. WHEN and IF such a thing happens, it'll rest entirely in the hands of Darren and his staff. They will make recommendations, those recommendations will be discussed and debated, and if they can find someone they all agree on, Darren will take it to the next level. It has absolutely nothing to do with post count or rep level or any other GW features. Nominating someone- either yourself or a friend- won't work.

Q: How do spoiler tags work?

This is actually covered in the FAQ, but here's a quickie visual:
text which translates to:
That wasn't so hard now, was it?

Note: There is now an exclamation point in the edit/post window which inserts spoiler tags automatically.
For some time now,and for the foreseeable future, all spoiler tags have to be typed manually.

Q: Any last words of advice?

RTFM (http://forum.gateworld.net/faq.php?faq=faq_cat_basics#faq_rules). It really does help.

BE POLITE. We're here to have fun, not to shove opinions down each other's throats.

Read Things to think about when starting a thread (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=21871). Good advice, and it comes from a moderator.

I have a few more hints for survival (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=5133034&postcount=265) in a thread that could prove VERY eye-opening to newbies and oldbies alike.

For another look into how to manage here at Gateworld, check out Purpleyin's Unofficial Guide to Gateworld (http://www.livejournal.com/users/missyvortexdv/87615.html) located on her blog (away from Gateworld). It covers some of these topics as well as ways to help folks "fit in" more easily when they post- including the difference between an opinion and a fact, how lurking can be beneficial, and the meaning of a protected thread. (thanks Qasim for the link)

Addition : Nolamom posted a visual Guide for New GateWorlders' benefit here :CLICK TO VIEW IMAGE (http://forum.gateworld.net/threads/18320-X-treme-Guide-to-GateWorld-%28for-newbies%29?p=13677788&viewfull=1#post13677788)

Addition :

If this post doesn't cover your question or concern : check out the Official "Help" threads in this section, and if in doubt : contact a Forum Moderator.

Your rep levels arent completely right Shadow. My rep is "ready to take a human host" (its after " a beacon of hope for all larval Goa'uld") and you don't have that on the list.

This is a great thread "ShadowMaat" that should really come in handy for newbies. This is a great forum that isn't just a great place to post about awesome Sci Fi shows, but its also a fun and friendly place where mods are people's friends and not their foes! Its awesome to have such a great collection of Q&As in 1 place. Nice job :)

I've added several of these to the FAQ. I'd rather keep the exact user level break-downs, the various user titles and Reputation notes, on a less "official" level.

Thanks, Shadow!

Just to make you go back and edit some more, Shadow…... :P

“…is whispered of among the System Lords.” is somewhere in there among the jello descriptions. :D I’m pretty sure it comes after “…is feared by humans in all Goa’uld-harvesting territories.”

“…is formally recognized by the System Lords” is in there as well. After the System Lords tire of whispering about you they then formally recognize you. Yippy! Then they try to kill you when you become a well-know threat……

Newbie Question:I have 400 posts, why do i have only one bar...?
post count and reputation level aren't directly linked. Post count only reflects how many posts you've made on the relevant sections of the board. Rep level has to do with what people think of those 400+ posts.

Post count determines avatar level. I think the levels were recently changed and I'm not sure what they were changed to, but I'm leaving up the "old" system as a general reference.

This is a great thread..! :)

In the 'Science and Tech' subforum, we (a few regulars in the S&T subforum) have made a new thread that we are trying to turn into a concordance to streamline the traffic in the S&T subforum. It is our hope that it will help new posters that may not be familiar or 'savvy' with the Search function here at Gateworld, by providing an ABC concordance they can read directly (as opposed to guessing at key words), or simply ask a regular in the S&T subforum in a post within the thread.

If people will use it, and it is successful, it should help cut down on repeat threads, and it might even be useful to the moderators in quickly finding the best older and more popular threads to merge newer repeat threads with. If any mods are reading, we would like you to consider 'tacking' our thread to the top, as a permanent supplement to the search option.

http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=26498

Thanks so much..! :)

I know this thread hasn't been used for a while, but I had a little too much time on my hands and checked whether the data you have in your first post is still correct, Shadow.

The user levels and the linked post count levels are still the same.

I checked the rep levels and added the number of blocks you need to have. The only real new thing is the deepest red level (see bottom). (I copied this from the first post; new stuff marked in blue.)

+1 block ... is incubating and will one day take a host.
+2 blocks ...is slithering well on the way to taking a host.
+3&+4 blocks ...is a beacon of hope for all larval Goa'uld.
+5&+6 blocks ...is finally ready to take a human host. (thanks for the reminder, GatetheWay)
+7 blocks ...is getting popular among the ranks of the Jaffa.
+8 blocks ...is feablue in all Goa'uld harvesting worlds.
+9 blocks & Darren, GateGipsy ...is whispered of among the System Lords. (thanks LoneStar1836)
+10 blocks ...is formally recognized by the System Lords. (thanks LoneStar1836)
Greg ...has ascended to a higher plane of existance. So long, mortals!
David ...is a well-known threat to the System Lords.
Major Tyler, Kiwi, Feli ...serves as a loyal advisor to the System Lords.
Skydiver, Madeleine, Shipperahoy, TameFarrar ...reigns as System Lord. Kneel before your god!

On the negative side, you have:

...is known only in the primordial waters on P3X-888.
...has been selected by the Goa'uld torture masters.
...has been banished to the Goa'uld naquadah mines.
...is the lowest of the low.

Regarding rep blocks, I'm pretty sure that the message changes a few times even though it stays at 11 blocks and all the messages (excepting Greg's) can be attained by anyone. I'm gonna agree with jonno about Greg's message. It may be attainable, but it's at a pretty high level. And of course, it's possible Greg gets inundated with green for working on the forum.

Q: If green means positive rep and red means negative rep, what do gray squares mean?

It means the person giving you rep is too new and/or has too low a reputation for their rep to affect your rep. I believe that "active" rep kicks in around your 50th post (when you're Jaffa Fodder).

Just curious here. So those gray reps never come into affect?

Celcool
March 22nd, 2007, 04:03 AM
no there are natural and will always stay grey.
Oh okay. Thx. I thought that maybe when the user gets enough posts they affect the rep of the person they gave the positive or negative rep to.

Hi.

I'm hoping somebody can help me out here. How do i go about 'quoteing' several posts in one reply? I can't seem to figure it out, so if someone could let me know i'd appreciate it :S

You click the "+" button (beside the "quote" button) on the posts you want to quote, then hit the "post reply" button at the bottom/top of the page.

Hi again. okay so i've got another stupid question :o

Someone just made a great sig for me and i managed to upload it, but how do i actually put it in my posts?

Would really appreciate some help here :S

smurf
July 2nd, 2007, 01:59 AM
Depends where you've uploaded it.

If you've uploaded it to gateworld there should be a "your current signature picture" box in the "edit signature" area. Just click on the "insert signature picture" link beside it and it should add [ SIGPIC][ /SIGPIC] (without the spaces) to the main text box. Then hit "save signature" button.

If you uploaded it outside of gateworld, such as to a photobucket (http://www.photobucket.com) account, then you need to take the url of the image, paste it into the main text area, and add the image tags around it - [ IMG] your link[ /IMG] (without the spaces). Then hit "save signature" button.

BTW when you hit the save sig button it doesn't confirm you've done it it just sends you back to the last page you were looking at. You can check it by looking at your "My Profile" section.

Have fun. :)

They aren't notified when you ignore them. Whenever you ignore someone, any PMs they send you won't show up for you. Any rep points they give you, the comments won't show up (but you still get the points). And, of course, any posts they make in a thread, you won't be able to see (but others will). Also, I don't think people on ignore can use the email link on your profile to email you.

When Darren adds new levels the X-treme Guide will reflect it. Until then you can make suggestions for ranks in the Suggestion for New Ranks (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=27623) thread or under Gateworld Suggestions. well it being not your profile you won't see "Customize Profile:" because you can only customize your own profile.

if you go on to other members profile you will only see "# Hide User Customizations" or show

That came about after I wrote the Guide, though I suppose it would be a good idea to try and squish it in somewhere:

As with so many other things in internet life, the restrictions placed on "probies" can be blamed on spambots. Having a mod check all initial posts assures (mostly) that there are REAL people posting REAL content and not just bots telling you how to get a cheap cell phone or watch hit movies online for free or whatever. The spam issue (were the idiots posting graphic porn pics part of it, too?) got bad enough that Darren decided it was time to take draconian measures to prevent further incursions.

There are a LOT of questions that get asked repetitively by newbies which aren't covered by the FAQ (http://forum.gateworld.net/faq.php).

<snip>

Hi,

While this post (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=4546146&postcount=1) is really helpful, I found things that aren't up-to-date or correct which I think you might want to adjust.

1. First, the last green/rep level is now know. Greg (http://forum.gateworld.net/member.php?u=1) has it.
"Greg has ascended to a higher plane of existence. So long, mortals!"

2. "Post count is tied into your user level and your avatar level,"
--> Actually it doesn't influence the pre-defined avatars availability any longer. It does still influence your ability to have a custom-avatar.

3. "I believe that "active" rep kicks in around your 50th post (when you're Jaffa Fodder). a gray rep will always be gray- like a leopard, rep doesn't change its spots."

This should be: "I believe that "active" rep kicks in around your 50th post (when you're a Staff Sergeant). A gray rep will always be gray- like a leopard, rep doesn't change its spots.

Also, people on Probie-status (different from Post-Count-Probie) cannot give out green anymore as a protection against spammers.

4. "It's been a while since I've paid attention to this, myself, so I'll let someone else correct my mistakes and provide any specific rep numbers required, but here's what I could find:"

Actually those numbers constantly change around and are thus unknown by anyone except Darren and the administrators, like Greg, Sky, Tame...

This according to Sky. (http://forum.gateworld.net/showpost.php?p=10756855&postcount=3311)

5. "but I think the maximum point-granting ability is between five to seven points."

Actually that's untrue. Sky's green for example is worth 27 points. Others have greening worth more than 7 points, too. The worth of your own green that you give out is dependent on your own reputation level, green received; the frequency which with you give green (green given); your post-count (activity) and length of membership. According to Sky (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?p=10881540#post10881540).

6. "When you join Gateworld, you start off with 13 points and one green block."

Actually you start off with 12 points. :)

7. "After the first four (I think), it becomes 200 points per block and the levels become progressively higher until you max out at 11 squares. I'm not sure how many points it takes get get from the 10th square to the 11th one, but I think it's around 500."

This should be: "After the first five normal green blocks, when you have more than 500 reputation points, you receive your first fluo-green block. Those lighter- or fluo-green, special, blocks are worth 200 points each. So at 500 points you get the first fluo-green block and at 1500 points you get the last, sixth fluo green block. Thus there are 11 blocks total, 5 normal green ones, worth a 100 points each and 6 fluo-green ones, worth each a 200 points."

It would be great if you could update the post like you did in the past. Thanks for the work you put into it!

Yours sincerly,
Jasper

Is there a way to save a post to favorites. Is there a favorites section in the forum?

Bagpuss
April 9th, 2012, 03:51 PM
No favourites section as such, but you can copy/paste a post into a Word document and save it as a file,or "bookmark" the post or thread .

Example :

Click on post one on the "#1" at the top right of Shadow's post .

Doing that'll give you a hyperlink http://forum.gateworld.net/threads/18320-X-treme-Guide-to-GateWorld-%28for-newbies%29?p=4546146&viewfull=1#post4546146

Then bookmark that link ,or add it to your browser's favourites or frequently visited sites.:)

( You can do that with any post.)

It's possible to subscribe to your favorite threads by clicking on Thread Tools in the menu bar below the thread title. Very useful for finding your favorite threads, particularly in very busy forums like Off-Topic. You can view your subscribed threads either by clicking on Quick Links / View Subscribed Threads at the top of the forum or by going to My Controls, where any subscribed threads with new posts in them are shown, although I'm not sure if My Controls works for probies...

couple of terms to be familiar with - while thunk is defined in the FAQ, whump is harder to find.

thunk - the sound of a body hitting the floor from swooning after seeing the object of one's affection; posting of pics to cause such swooning
whump - the situations and resulting injuries of the characters, requiring the ministrations of the fan to the adored one
thump/whunk - combinations of the above

Heya! I am a newbie, and I was wondering how you can upload pictures? I tried but I failed, and would like some clear advice. Thanks in advance!

And you will contiue to fail until you are taken off probie status. Blame the spammers. I do

Actually, posting images is one feature Probies ARE allowed.:)

The pics have to be checked by the Mods though and if an image is oversized or hotlinked, the tags have to be changed.

What Gegee really needs is help with prechecking and uploading her pics.

I know someone posted a very good walk-through somewhere of how to post to the Forum via PB and imageshack,so I'll try to find the links.

Thanks you so much, Bagpuss! I could really use some walkthroughs at this point. :weir:

From Photobucket: (get yourself a free account - takes only a couple of minutes to sign up)
upload any pictures you wish to post onto your PB account so that you're not hotlinking to some other site. Then, choose the IMG code for posting onto Gateworld. (Copy the code - Ctrl+C then Paste into your post Ctrl+V) If the picture is larger than Gateworld's rules (100 kb or larger than 700 px wide) post it as a thumbnail. To do this, you must enable the thumbnail option. Go to Account Settings by clicking onto your name at the upper right-hand side. Select Album Settings from the menus across the top. Put a check mark in the box by IMG Thumb and click save. Now you will be able to post thumbnail images. Copy and paste the thumbnail code the same way as you would have for regular image code.

Not that I post a lot of photos here anyway, but I don't have those options (the Album Settings on the menu)?

ETA: I probably have them, just can't find them. :(

you have to enable it separately, they are not default. The default are just Email & IM, Direct, HTML, and IMG. That's why I said go into your account settings to enable it.

Both work, but your second picture is slightly too big (about 115 KB when the maximum allowed is 100). Try saving it again as jpg and decrease the quality.

Is there an updated list of ranks and rep levels? I seem to have a rank and rep level that are not indicated in this original post.

Nolamom
August 1st, 2012, 06:44 AM
We are in the middle of a special "theme" time - the Olympics - so all the ranks and reps have been changed to reflect this. Don't worry, it's just temporary. There tends to be a special theme weekend about once a month. Afterwards, the ranks and reputation levels return to normal.

Bagpuss

Few themes have ever had a 100% positive feedback.:)

This one is no exception, though a vast majority of Members who responded in the August Theme thread and in Pm wanted the titles to last through to Aug 12,and because the Games only roll round every four years, the Mods agreed to prolong the theme.

Considering the ranks aren't permanent or in our face if we focus on reading and creating posts,it's a small inconvenience.

Good luck avoiding the Events in the media though. Its pretty much universal!

considering that the ranks are based on Stargate character's names and a generic piece of sports equipment? Or that the reps are similarly generic? You'd have to reach pretty far to claim any sort of infringement whatsoever. As for the advertising business - seems like an excellent idea to keep companies from sneaking in free international advertising by being pictured in an Olympic venue.

Since (hopefully) newbies will look in this thread for a guide to GW, it seemed appropriate to put these here.

Is there a way to change my display name? I'd like my name to have the appropriate spaces and punctuation over there on the left where all my info is.

You mean you'd like your User Name to be changed to "Amara D'Angeli?"

The normal advice would be to pm me or Sky,but I can make the change right now if you're okay with that.:)
