View Full Version : vBulletin 3.5 and AJAX
Greg
September 28th, 2005, 11:26 PM
The Gateworld Forums have now been upgraded to vBulletin 3.5, which uses AJAX for inline quick replies and edits, making it easier and faster to post/edit replies - and you dont need to refresh!
For AJAX to work for you, you will need a compatible browser, such as
- Firefox 1.0.7, or Firefox 1.5 Beta 1
- Opera 8.0.1 or later
Internet Explorer does NOT support AJAX.
Enjoy!

I can see you're probably still working on tweaking it right now, but I just thought I'd say I noticed the columns are in the wrong order (ie under the wrong headings) in the forums. The last post box is two columns to the left, shifting the views and replies out to the wrong place.
Greg
September 29th, 2005, 12:01 AM
Just because you use IE, it doesnt mean you CANT use Quickreply. It just means you cant use the AJAX functions (i.e. when you post a quickreply, the page will refresh).
Avatars have been fixed.

Yep, that's high on the fix list.
I know that everyone who is on right now has a list of fixes for us. Please give Greg some time to nail down the obvious ones -- then we'll ask for any others people have spotted that we may have missed.

The My Controls seem to now be on he far left of the menu! The menu bar seems to be reorganized with the My controls preceding the FAQ... :)
I seem to be having problems though with some stuff like smilies and the quick reply button using Safari 2 on OS X. I hope that these bugs will be squashed!

I'm wondering: Is it a bug or a feature that the threads which had new posts since my last visit and were shown under "my controls" now vanish completely from that list (and are not only untagged) once I visited them again, and can only be seen again if I click on "view all s. threads"?
And I also hope that the white color for the links or page numbers will be changed again, but I understand that this isn't top priority! :)
I think it's funny that you can see who is viewing a thread now! :)

I know Darren and Greg said to wait till they get round to asking us,but I notice that the "Pm this user" feature isn't currently available.
(We can still send e-mails,but if users have that option switched off,then there's no way to contact each other off-forum presently.)
Sorry,D & G if this is actually part of the new upgraded forum,or if it's because I use IE ! :)

Just adding to the comments above ... the new color of the links in posts does seem a bit whitewashed and harder to read. You may want to revisit that and fine tune a bit more.

I'm getting the closed iris icon on the episode sub-forums of the various section. They're still post-able, though, it's just the icon that hiccupped.
Also, if there's any chance to get "My Controls" put back on the right-hand side of the screen... *wistful sigh*

And I keep clicking on quicklinks, dammit.
And are threads not updating properly? 'cause I logged off and back in and that usually clears the "unread threads" thing, but now they're still showing up as unread. Not a HUGE thing, but it's distracting.

i'm a staff member on two forums which use Ajax and i have no problems using the Ajax features on those
however, on this site i can't use quick reply, pick any of the message options (such as font, bold, italic or smilies) and when i click on post reply, i still can't use these features.
i have no problems one of the sites, but the other i did have some of the same problems for a while. the only difference was i was could use quick reply (but couldn't use any of the options) and no matter who i tried to post, kept getting an error about character limits so couldn't post.
not sure how it was fixed but the admin on the site which i had trouble with thought it may have been a skin problem (not a coder, so i can't explain it)

I was just wondering what you mean by AJAX. Is it the javascript xmlrequest DOM object that google maps uses or is it something else. We use the AJAX model for many of our apps at work, and we require all our users to use IE. I know this is kind of a strange question, but I just want to be sure I understand.

OK gang,
We've obviously made progress since the install less than 24 hours ago. Just to be clear, the first thing we are doing is reapplying our customizations to the forum template, so that everything looks just like it did before (plus the new functionality).
If you see a font color that looks wrong, a button in a different place, a missing or misplaced page item or function, it's probably still on our to-do list. We're working to make everything as it was -- menu bar, breadcrumb navigation in the footer, etc. etc. (The reason we have to do this is because the 3.5 upgrade is so significant. The smaller incremental upgrades do not affect the templates themselves, which were customized fairly significantly before this forum launched in May 2004.)
Then we'll entertain suggestions on what to actually change.
If you are having vBulletin functionality problems (like a "Submit" button doesn't submit), the first thing you should do is clear your browser's cache and restart. If the problem persists and it actually turns out to be a bug in the new version of the software, we'll wait patiently for vB to release a fix.
Thanks! Stay tuned.
SaberBlade
September 29th, 2005, 10:22 PM
honestly, i don't accept AJAX not being compatible as a good reason. i've used it with IE6 on other forums and currently having no problems and strangely enough, the one site i did have trouble with was fixed with a new skin was added.
maybe the template upgrades that need to be done are causing problems because i've no plans to use firefox because one site won't work right, even if it is a good site like this.
also, tried deleting the cache, didn't help at all

Is anyone else having problems to subscribe to a thread via the thread tools? It only works when I'm also submitting a message, not when I try to subscribe directly (I cleared the cache). But I'll wait patiently, just as Darren said, maybe there'll be a fix released soon. :)

AJAX, or at least the AJAX design model we use can be used on four of the major Browsers, Mozilla, Firefox, Safair, Netscape and IE6. However IE6 is a bit finiky in how you use it. Here is some sample code if anyone cares that will allow you to allow AJAX to run on IE6.
<script type="text/javascript">
var xmlhttp
function loadXMLDoc(url)
{
// code for Mozilla, etc.
if (window.XMLHttpRequest)
{
xmlhttp=new XMLHttpRequest()
xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=xmlhttpChange
xmlhttp.open("GET",url,true)
xmlhttp.send(null)
}
// code for IE
else if (window.ActiveXObject)
{
xmlhttp=new ActiveXObject("Microsoft.XMLHTTP")
if (xmlhttp)
{
xmlhttp.onreadystatechange=xmlhttpChange
xmlhttp.open("GET",url,true)
xmlhttp.send()
}
}
}
function xmlhttpChange()
{
// if xmlhttp shows "loaded"
if (xmlhttp.readyState==4)
{
// if "OK"
if (xmlhttp.status==200)
{
// ...some code here...
}
else
{
alert("Problem retrieving XML data")
}
}
}
</script>
this example can be found at
http://www.w3schools.com/dom/dom_http.asp
Now it's entirely possible that I'm thinking of a different AJAX, but if not I hope this helps.

The only snag I'm still getting (I'm on IE6),is that to pm someone,I have to go to any post I can find by them ,click on their name, then go to "send a personal message".Then the box comes up fine.
(Or go into my control panel, go to "Send new message" and type their name into the space provided.)
If I go to their profile on the Forum Index page,if the poster's logged in, it just shows the link to e-mail them at the right side,but just click on "find all posts by".It works.
Otherwise no worries,but good luck to all who are currently having problems.:)

The post page hasnt changed at all, it is only the quick reply function(s)When I click on the Quote page like I am now I have things in boxes with crosses what are they meant to be? I haven't tried to PM anyone yet so I don't know if that is affected.
Small things have changed too to do with my toolbar (must be IE6), spellchecker being one and right clicking to delete a line isn't working now either.
Like I said small things but well annoying.
I will have to change my browser. :(

AJAX is just a way of doing web page content. It puts Javascript on the browser that does communication with the webserver. This allows for load to be pushed off of the usually overloaded Server, and onto the less loaded client (Which is your computer). This allows for faster and richer webpages, because they are no longer static, and there isn't a big investment in other third party technologies, because the three technologies that are involded. On the Server side computing, using a standard programming language, Java, or a server side scripting language. And on the client you use Javascript to generate the content of the HTML page that shows up on your computer. The third technology is XML that is used to comunicate between the two. So in short AJAX isn't a new technology, just a new way of thinking. Sort of like the Blackbird in Galactica. There all the stuff they used was standard stuff, but when they were all put togther you get a new kind of fighter.
Hope that helps. If you have a headache don't fear I still have one and I've been doing this stuff at work for 2 months now.

I hate it.
You cant use keys like Home and End, or the arrow keys, or the shift key (I use shift-arrow keys, etc. to select things all the time)
Plus, in firefox, whenever I try to use the quote key, it brings up search rather than appearing in the quick reply box.
Edit:
Damn you fickle vBulletin! It works now. But before it didn't, on three seperate posts (and one reboot) that I tried.

I'm using Firefox version 1.0.7 if that makes any difference.
Another glitch with the upgrade. When you hit "preview post" and your preview pops up, the "Submit Message" button under the preview is dead. Not that it's stopping me from posting, so it doesn't really matter, but thought I'd mention it anyway even though y'all probably already know about it.

That's a bug in Firefox, one I've been following for some time becasue I've always had that bug on my lab computer. It pops up only on certain computers whenever you try to ype in a textbox with Firefox. When you start Firefox up, at first it works fine, but after a while, the arrow keys don't work, the home/end doesn't work, the copy/paste isn't behaving correctly, and finally when ever you hit \ or ', the FastFind pops up. My two home computers don't experience this problem at all, but my lab computer has had this problem throughout every version. Other people have posted this in the Mozilla forums, but no one can consistantly re-create the problem on any computer. The only known "fix" is when you notice that ' brings up Fastfind, or the arrow keys stop working, or copy/paste acts funny, etc.... you can open up a new window (Ctrl-N, not a new tab) and it will stop, for a time.
EDIT:
I'm also seeing the HTML code for the Lost Seson 2, Ep 3 Orientation Thread.

I've lost track of the thread about not being able to subscribe to threads (a feature which is STILL not working properly) and wanted to add an addendum.
In addition to being able to subscribe to threads when you reply to them (they're in the options box below your post) you can also do the same thing by going in to edit an existing post. Just click on "go advanced" or whatever it is and subscribe that way. Iff'n you don't have anything new to post and don't want to waste space. :)

Working on the HTML code issue. This is an add-on plug-in for vBulletin 3.5 which apparently doesn't have all its issues ironed out yet, so we're waiting on the plug-in author to provide a working version.
Till then just ignore it, with my apologies.

That's a little harsh. :(
If he doesn't use IE and the documentation says a version of IE doesn't support it, that's the info he can give.
I was very pleasantly suprised to find that IE 6 supports the enhancements of AJAX.

who said i lied? I misread the vBulletin documentation and corrected myself once i tested it in IE6 and IE7.
And yes, i do dislike IE, since i spend most of my day fixing computers that have been infected through IE exploits. Out of all the Firefox/Mozilla exploits, i've never seen a computer actually infected or hacked through one.
