This was an excellent double ep., and a rare thing. A double ep. that doesn't have a slow 1st ep, littered with clips. ;)

Cool running battle scene, and nice to see Daniel using a P-90. You just can't beat a good fire-fight! :D

It was a shame to see the end of everybodies fav. bad guy, though. :(

I really liked this sequence too, although I was a little surprised to see Daniel as adept and handling a P-90 as he was the first time I saw the episode.

I was surprised mostly because we just don't see him with guns that often and when we do it's usually a handgun.

It was great to see Daniel without his staple handgun. I thought it was funny how Daniel didn't know how to react to the replicators once he actually met them.

your probably rihgt that it was a burn mark, but maybe it was hte skin detiorating form when the symbiot died in Serpents song, if Sokar didn't bring him back fast enough to the sarcofocus, there could have been soem damage

I even saw Daniel training his muscles in S7 .And I saw him with guns sometimes during the seasons. From a archeologist to a real warrior. He has changed a lot doesn"t he And I liked the episode too.NO more Apophis. So now his homeworld is overrun by replicators

Good piont. It would only take a half dozen of those blocks to survive, and the place would be over-run.
It might be a good idea if the team went and checked it out. (Now there's a fanfic plot!)

Suppose they would have to find a missile to use though, I imagine at this level of their evolution they can't manufacture stuff or can they?

It could have been the nista substance Apophis had used on Ry'ac and not just the Scophagus that brainwashed Teal'c but we'll never know.

This is one episode I like to watch again and again after a few months, its a great episode and the fight sequences in this episode are brilliant.

As for wishing Apophis comes back, spoilers for Season 6 onwards below:

Apophis appears in Teal'cs dreams in 'The Changeling' and also appears in the Season eight finale 'Moebius: Part II. So watch out for those two episodes.

Well, nobody's mentioned the reason I love this episode: Jacob Carter. He's one of my absolute favorite characters on Stargate, and this was one of his best eposodes. That slightly pessimistic, slightly sarcastic air of his just gets me every time.

JACK: Excuse me. I distinctly remember someone saying "We're not gonna make it!" I think we made it.

JACOB: I'm sorry, I overreacted. At the time it seemed we weren't gonna make it.

JACK: Yes! Well, next time, maybe we'll just wait and see.

JACOB: << Rather sarcastically, yet with a smile >> And blow the last chance I'll ever have to be right?

I absolutely agree. I quite enjoyed seeing him use it, too. Delicious bicep bulging. :D

Like Beatrice, I LOVE Jacob and he was in prime form in this ep. Great little dialogue between him, Jack, and Sam.

I was pretty shocked by Teal'c turning. I did NOT see that one coming. I wasn't surprised by the replicators coming from one of the crates though -- I knew they should have never let the cargo ship on board.

I'd love to see some follow up as to whether any of the replicators survived the blast. I sure as hell hope not. Crafty little buggers! (pun intended :D))

As for Apophis, I hope he's dead for good. I'm pretty sick of him. Die already! :p

Oh, I have no doubt the planet itself is still there; after all, a planet is very large and hard to destroy. See Sam's site on Destroying the Earth (http://ned.ucam.org/~sdh31/misc/destroy.html) for more details on why this is so (and ways to do it anyway). However, I'd say there's a good chance the impact started a nuclear winter or something like that. So whether or not anyone ultimately survived is a good question.

I enjoy this ep, too. Apophis' dress sense seems to be improving at long last, Teal'c's being one heck of a bad boy (not that it's his fault, poor dab), Jacob Carter makes another very welcome return and lots of replicators get blasted into tiny, tiny bits. Fabulous.

So true. One of the best, if not the best recurring characters in Stargate. And, lets face it, it's not like there's a shortage of competition for that accolade! :D

It's nice to get a two-parter where both episodes are very good. We had everybody I like in there- apophis being bad with style, the replicators which are great villains because SG1 always have to come up with a Mcgyver type plan to beat them, Jacob- at his best I thought, he was almost like the fifth member of SG1, him and jack have a good repertoire together.
And SG1 with daniel kicking ass and sam doing her brainy thing,Teal'c being very naughty and slapping jack (who took it very well considering), and finally jack who was his usual funny self.
A good start to the season! :)

Do we ever find out what galaxy they were in and whose ship that was?

'Fraid we don't; no. All we know for sure is that it's a heck of a long way from Earth - and they won't be home in time for tea.

It's possible (and the ep analysis on the main site discusses this) to argue that they've ended up in the Asgard home galaxy - simply because of the presence of a replicator-infested ship. Of course, this is based upon the assumption that it has to be there because of the known Asgard bug problem. We can't conclusively 'prove' this, though, because there's no reason to assume that the little critters haven't expanded into new galactic territory.

As SG1 never got the chance to board the infested bug-vessel (even before they realised it must have been crawling with metallic beasties), there was no way they could have known who originally manned the ship before the bugs nicked it. So, again, we never find out whose ship it was - other than it was being used by Replicators. So, I suppose you could say that it was theirs (after a fashion).;)

I really didnt like this episode because of the fact that you had to believe that teal'c would change sides just because he's been brainwashed.

It doesnt really give teal'c's character much strengh or will power.

Um, the Goa'uld have great abilities for brainwashing. We've known this since the very beginning of the series. Between drugs/chemicals or other means, they're really good at taking control of people. It doesn't make Teal'c any less strong of mind; it's simply an acknowledgment that Apophis has a lot of resources to command in this area.

Nobody is perfect, nobody is 100% capable of triumphing over all things with a smile on their face and a song on their heart. People, no matter how strong they are, have weaknesses. Showing that makes this a stronger show, imho. Gives it depth.

It also seems quite remarkable that Apophis has gone to such lengths to resurrect a dead Shol'vah. But I imagine our favourite Mr Snake-in-the-Head has a good motive for it (well, good for him, anyway!).

After all, he could simply have announced to his assembled Jaffa (those who ended up in Galaxy 'X' with him, anyway) that the infamous Shol'vah is dead - see what fate awaits any who would follow his path of apostasy and treachery. This isn't much help though, given that he and his Jaffa are stranded in another galaxy and all of them will have long since snuffed it (or been taken as hosts by their symbiotes upon maturing) before they get back. They're not exactly going to be impressed with a god who can't get them home before they turn up their toes or worse. Besides - how is he supposed to remain superior when surrounded by Goa'uld in much bigger and stronger hosts than his?

He's got to keep the troops happy - and faithful. The best way he can do that is to display a reformed Shol'vah - and the ultimate Shol'vah at that.

His former First Prime - Teal'c. Perfect!

After all, if he has sufficient power to revive Teal'c and regain his loyalty, then he's got an incredibly potent demonstration of that power, coupled with a fanatically loyal leader who will keep his troops in line (and protect him if any of the others get 'Goa'ulded' in the meantime). He's got nothing to lose and everything to gain from expending valuable resources to achieve his goal. Though he's going to have lots of fun with Teal'c when Junior matures. Or maybe he's not thinking that far ahead.

Not bad really, given the size of the thing! I think I'd have come up with a phrase far naughtier than that. Commendable restraint from Jack, there!

I just love the menace of the replicators. All there is between SG1 and horrid death is the contents of their ammunition pouches and magazines. Once they're empty...brrr.

One of the best enemies around, those little metal invertebrates. They don't hate you - they just, well, replicate!

"Aww, crap" seems to have become the standard Stargate 'situation bad swear word' - and a lot more people are using it nowadays.

But it was Jack that started it, and no-one, absolutely no-one, does it as well as he does. The others are just imitations. Accept nothing but the best! :jack:

One of the best finale of a two parter. Replicators , Apophis and his Red Jaffa ( their red color is cool ) and SG-1. Firefight was great. ( Daniel learned a few things about using firearms it seems) It is interesting to see normal human conventional weapons are far more effective than high-tech Gou'old weapons against replicators. SG-1 also got a few Jaffas also. I think by destroying Ha'Tak's impulse drive they destroyed both bugs and also Apophis. They also prevented Apophis escaping by capturing Teal'c

Apophis dead. Well that would happen sooner or later. But I expected his death to be far more dramatic and painful. ( he just screamed "Maaaaa" , -was he calling his mommy:)- as Ha'tak crashed to planet ) Brainwashed Teal'c was very hard to handle but our heroes managed it.

I'm surprised no one's noted this before about the episode, but it made my jaw drop (with a loud "Wow!" :thoranime09: ), so I'm just going to mention it here anyway.

A bit into the episode, the team is battling a hoard of Replicators while dramatically running for their lives. :jack_new_anime25: When they reach the transporter room, they activate the Goa'uld transporter, enemies jump towards them and onto the rings, and when the bugs are literally within six inches of finishing off our heroes, SG-1 is beamed/transported away.

But unlike all the other episodes, they did not show this "beaming" from outside the rings. INSTEAD, THEY ACTUALLY SHOWED FROM WITHIN WHAT RING-TRANSPORTATION LOOKED LIKE. It was like a flaming Ancient field, constantly in motion, strikingly glowing though strangely transparent, that engulfed them, deatomized them as a Stargate does, and then reassembed them on the other side.

You can see some brief screencaps here (not very good ones, but they're fair) :
http://www.stargatecaps.com/sg1/s5/501/index3.shtml

If someone can find some better snapshots, or even a video clip, let me know! :apophis-rings:

Yeah, I know this effect is nothing compared to the visuals of more recent episodes. But you have to admit, it was cool. It was a one-of-a-kind moment that was never before seen, and never been seen since. Wish they'd use that shot more often.

Just my thoughts...

I just watched this episode, too.. and my jaw dropped!! That action scene was so freaking awesome!!! I liked how Jack slid into the rings, and while he was firing they got de-atomized and re-atomized aboard the other ship - without changing the camera at all... I love when films and shows do that (not changing cameras, just one complete run through!)!

Also, the special effects of the whole episode was outstanding... The pacing of this episode was great...

This episode was quite unusual, with a bad Teal'c (which was obvious from the start) and SG-1 actually looking like a professional unit in keeping the Replicators at bay. Sad to see Apophis fall into the abyss once more, but its happened so many times now. I wondered how they'd get back into their galaxy, but those handy Replicators were always there!

I thought it was a great episode(s) except for one thing - Teal'c's conversion.
Problem 1) Apophis is watching his fleet being destroyed by an exploding star, and he decides this is the best time to stick Teal'c in a sarc?
2) Apophis's ship was in hyper-space a couple of seconds longer than SG, and in that time Teal'c was revived and so effectively brain-washed? and no torture session first? Just straight back to first prime?

Another slight unrelated thing that bothered me - when Jacob comes to free SG1 from the holding cell (when Carter is complaining she doesn't know what to do and suddenly the door opens), and then the Jaffa appear seconds later... normally you can hear Jaffa clumping along from some distance away. I guess that time they had their ninja boots on.

Another thing I thought kinda silly, at the end when Apophis is staring at the planet and screams... well he didn't know where they were headed and couldn't have been aware they were travelling at 500x light speed or whatever, so what was he planning to do, spend 100 years with bugs crawling over his force-shield while staring out the window?

I wonder if the Asgard know about the replicators in this section of the universe. It would be interesting to find out if the Asgard know who's ship and technology the Replicators were feeding off of. I don't think they should have gone down the road of having Teal'c go "darkside" on us. However, Apophis is dead and all of his fleet has been destroyed so on to greener pastures.

I wonder how the replicators got into what appeared to be a sealed container. I mean the Jaffa would have only taken what Apophis had told them to bring so wouldn't they have checked the containers beforehand? Or did they know what was in every container when they were loading them? I think it would have been more realistic if one of the Replicators had stowaway on the Tel'tak, but that just me.

Great season 4 ending and season 5 opener.

I think regarding teal'c turning bad, it probably have something to do with the same effect Daniel had when he once use that thing on a planet where he wanted to marry the princess and he turned evil.

Given that the goauld are the one who build them, they probably are able to control its effect and brainwash teal'c

I hope he turn good again pretty soon though

Hmmm, just watched this, good episode but leaves a few unanswered questions.

What system did they end up in?
What race was the other ship?
Did any replicators survive?

Ida has been mentioned, the ship didnt look very Asgardy to me so dunno, theres always possibility that it could of been Ida but just another race from that galaxy not the Asgard..

I don't think anyone figured out what system that all wound up in. The other ship didn't look Replicator-y either, but it's my impression from the rest of the episode that it was a replicator ship, since they were not on Apophis' ship before the huge leap in hyperspace that took them so many light years away. And then, of course, it was discovered that there were replicators all over Apophis' ship. So I personally think it was a replicator ship, and during the battle with Apophis' ship, they somehow beamed themselves over to it, which was why Apophis and group abandoned their own ship to go to the one Jacob, Jack, Sam and Daniel were on, and the bugs got transferred with them, thus taking over that ship as well. It wouldn't surprise me if some replicators survived that explosion, given how they manage to survive the most destructive ways of trying to get rid of them.:(

that is without a doubt a replicator ship, even if the fact that the replicators just happen to make their way on board apophis' ship doesn't convince you, you can see that the ship looks exactly the same as the one in "unnatural selection" which scans prometheus. http://i42.tinypic.com/30i9irl.jpghttp://i42.tinypic.com/2hyf69e.jpgwhen you look at them both you can see that distinct shape of what i can only describe as wings.

this episode is amazing though.

I dont think its a "Replicator" ship, yes its got replicators on it but its too asthetic to be one of theres, especially when you look at the one that 5th was on when the Replicators escaped from the black hole, that was made entirely from blocks yet doesnt really have much form to it..

that was a later replicator ship, the one in the second picture is the first replicator ship you see close up.

What a start of season 5 ! First time I watched it and I'm not dissapointed.

Action packed scenes with Replicators , Apophis , Teal'c , and Jacob Carter in his best episode .

I think Apophis is dead for good now, lets hope so....

Another brain washing episode. Poor Apophis. He can never catch a break that man. The replicators actually did something good. Daniel with a P90 is a good thing.

Apophis dead was quite unspectular, dont u think?! I mean for one of the main villians they used for over four seasons tptb could have thought of some better death, i really wished that tealc or daniel was somehow involved in the killing of apophis because of their backround story (Daniel with Share and TealC you know....) but all in all one of my most favorite stargate opening seasons episodes!!!!

I know it was infected by replicators cause that's how they got on the gou'ld ship but who's ship was it to start with....

Loulou13

It could be just a replicator ship. Why wouldn't they construct ship?
But if it's the same that in wormhole x-tream this theory doesn't work... I will make another screen capture to compare :P

It's not the same. So I would say that the two other ships were constructed by the replicator themself.

Apophis finally died. Yea! I also must complement CJ on his excellent acting in this episode. I didn't like seeing Teal'c so hostile toward his friends, but that's the result of Go'uld control/brain washing.
Teal'c: "I have never ceased to be in the service of my god."

Oh, that made my stomach turn. I thought I would be sick. Then, he talked about fighting and dying with honor in the name of Apophis. Poor Teal'c! He needs help.

Wow...This is such a cool and exciting episode, I love that we get Replicators to top off all the joy! there's nothing in the world as creepy as the sound of their little "legs" going clickety clack....clickety clack.....

Jack really likes to irritate Jacob, eh? : ) Love the part where Jack is talking about Jacob being too negative and the whole "blow my last chance of being right?" Hilarious! They have a great rapport with each other, much like Jack and Maybourne.

Oohh..scary Teal'c. Really scary....
"It hurts me that you would say that, but it's ok because I know it isn't true."

How much can go wrong in one little episode? Oh so much!!! What a ride.

"You got a better idea, Mr. Positive?"

Lots of great action and suspense. Great 2 parter!

Sorry if this has already been posted, but does anyone else appreciate just how unlikely it is that the motherships, having been propelled by the blast wave of the supernova, would exit hyperspace in another galaxy? And in a star system within said galaxy... Given the distances between galaxies, and the distances between stars within galaxies, the chances of them dropping out in one are negligible.

Also how did the jaffa fit a sarcophagus (spelling?) into the cargo ship?

Regardless, this is a really good episode, one of my all time favourites

About even with the first part. Nothing special stood out for me other than the fact that they are pushing the replicators to the forefront. They seem like an unbeatable enemy and I stopped watching the show when the replicators were around. so seeing how they are handled should be interesting.

Even more unlikely is the chance that after exiting hyperspace into another galaxy, in another star system, it just happens to be the one the Replicators are from!

Enjoyable start to the season, although not the greatest of episodes. An unfortunate return for the boring old Replicators, but they don't take up a huge amount of the screen time. Some great banter between characters, and an unexpected twist with Teal'c. It's a shame Daniel has so little to do in an episode that is so focused on the team, as this is an out-and-out military action episode.

The way season 4 ended could have set up a great story arc with SG-1 stuck in a distant galaxy, but it was unlikely to ever happen and it's not at all surprising that they are back home by the end of the episode without much effort. I'm so glad to finally see the end of Apophis, he was a pretty weak bad guy and generally useless in any episode he appeared in. Cronus, Heru-Ur, etc., had so much more potential and screen presence than he ever did. At least we have Ba'al to look forward to!

Special note must be given to the bloody FANTASTIC special effects on show in this episode.

RATING: 7.5 out of 10

I think O'Neill overdoes the picking on Jacob Carter and the Tok'ra. At almost any and every opportunity he makes a snide remark, even when Selmak is communicating with Apophis as the ship commander.
Speaking of which, what are the total number of times that Apophis has been killed by goa'uld and by SG1 etc.?
I think this was the second time he was killed by SG1, and I think he was killed by the goa'uld 3 times, which includes at least one alternative reality story.
He died in SGC and must have escaped when Teal'c returned him through the stargate and been rescucitated in the sarcophagus. Baal or Cronus killed him at least once that I can remember.

I am not clear (yet) on what happened once the got back to our galaxy in hyperdrive after the destruction of Apophis and his planet. How did they get back to Earth with the ship? I would assume that the regular hyperdrive speed inside the galaxy would get them back to Earth's orbit.

LOoks like I'm the first rewatcher to talk about an S5 ep! :)

September 2001: In the past several months I had stumbled accross and gotten myself really into the Starguide forum on Delphi. The first thread I remember reading was a season 4 review thread and that was my first introduction to the various segments in fandom. Also my first introduction to some great people! :)

Hanging out on such a forum, S5 went on to become the first season that I really got significantly spoiled with but still...we were really looking forward to new SG1 and then...9/11 happened about a week or so before the season premiere started in the UK and this great community was scared out of their wits and the start of the season wasn't such a big deal any more.

And yet still, it was a reminded that some cool things went on.

Anyway...

1. Well I knew the Replicators were coming but didn't expect them to knock out Apothis's ship.

2. They retrieve Teal'c and he pulls a gun on them. Oucchhhh....

3. Yes, Jacob was the 5th member of SG1 here because he had to be.

4. Bleep that was a big bug.

5. Was not expecting Apothis to go down like that but...they did get out of it.

Quite a way to start the season.

Great opener to season 5. Damn were there a lot of visual effects. So, Teal'c now thinks Apophis is still his god (for now ;))

It's a shame we'll never see that other ship (the one that attached Apophis' ship) again, because it looked pretty cool.

The Commentary:

Martin noted how the location of the camera is based on the direction of the ship (most of the time).
The shootout between Jack, Sam, & Jacob vs the Replicators was shot with one take as the suggestion of Michael Greenburg(?)
Originally for this scene, the camera was 4 inches away from Chris' face. His head was big (enough to make the crew start laughing), so the camera was moved back a little bit.

When Teal'c hits Jack in the face, Chris actually hit RDA because he didn't stop fast enough. He stop fast enough during the other takes, but not for this take.
Not a visual effect

Wow, season five already! Great start.

The one time having a ship infested with Replicators turns out to an advantage, they get back to the Milky Way galaxy quickly!

Loved the effect of the Replicators walking around on Apophis' personal sheild!

The acting award goes to Chris J in this episode! He was fantastic as the brain washed Teal'c. The exchange between Jack and Teal'c was so well done, you just don't want to hear Teal'c talk like that! :(

O'NEILL: ................. Come on, we're friends. Are you trying to tell me you don't remember what's happened these past four years.

TEAL'C: I remember everything. It makes me ill to think I was forced to pretend to be your friend. So many times I saved your life when I wished I could watch you die.

And that's the end of Apophis. He wasn't the the most interesting system lord to begin with. But he did get better in the later seasons. Plus he holds a special place for being the one who started it all.

Overall it was a great start to the season. The replicator ship was very cool looking.

The scene with the the replicators chasing the team was great. Very action packed.

He really wasn't that interesting was he? Especially considering how long he was used on the show. Just hard to kill, he dies or is near death and he springs back like nothing happened - kind of like Daniel.

This was a good episode, Teal'c especially did a fantastic job in it, and it was a great wrap up to the season four cliffhanger. Re-watching it you can now see hints in the way Teal'c is talking to SG1 when he's on the cargo ship, that all isn't right.

Even though Apophis wasn't extremely interesting (I prefer Ba'al to be honest), I think his role and resurrections play a pivotal role throughout these first few seasons because of his (former) relationship with Teal'c. He's had his evil moments (abducting Sgt Kettering, implanting and subsequently impregnating Sha're and trying to torture SG-1 on Netu etc) but because he never seems to die for real and has been here for four years in the end you only think 'Oh not again' or 'when will he finally die?!' and his earlier work gets overlooked.

Ouch! Reminds me of Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie's co-appearences on various shows where Stephen's character hits Hugh's, and one time he really does hit Hugh! :P Didn't look as painful as this scene though, poor RDA!

I am completely biased as Season 5 is my favorite season of SG1. Exodus was a fantastic epiosde with a griping cliffhanger that when I first say Enemies I said that this would have to be awesome to top the S4 finale. And it was in the truest sense. I found it interesting to see the Goa'uld fight Replicators aka the two main enemies of SG1 for the first 8 seasons. Clearly the Replicators were overmatched for the Goa'uld. It is the more standard of SG1 haveing a set of problems to solve and they try to tackle each one to save the day.

Some people were sad to see Apophis finally die but I think it was time to kill him off for good. The villian had seemed to run his course with antagonizing SG1. He was fun to hate but I think too much longer it would have became a joke that Apophis was still around. What sells is that we have a character element to the action. The Teal'c being brainwashed is nice emotional element to see Sg1 struggle with fighting their own.

Not sure if this thread (or forum) is really alive anymore, but I was just wondering about the Greek inscription on Cronus' throne.

????O??? ?????
?????? ????

??????? ????
????? ???????
?????? ???

The wiki translates it thusly:

Holy Antiochus
(???) god
- Cronos -
(???) (???)
GRACIOUS EMPEROR
FEAR CRONUS

I'm pretty sure that's some Google Translate BS. I don't know all the words, but Antiochus was a Greek citizen that I doubt would be named on the throne, and ????? means 'serpent'. I still don't have all the words, but we're looking at something like:

Drive away the serpent,
King and God
- Cronos -
(???) (???)
Fear Cronos, the gracious emperor.
