Hey, folks!

As you've no doubt seen, we've been busy doing some reorganizing, renaming, and new folder creation here at GateWorld Forum! For the record, all posts on the forum will now count toward your post count, with the exception of those made in the "Off-Topic Chatter" and "Testing Ground" folders.

Here's a recap of what's new and what's changed:

- "About the Forum" has been moved here to the top of the folder list, and renamed "Forum Announcements and Help." Threads in this folder are the primary way that the administrators and moderators will communicate with you, so please keep an eye on it. Don't skip past this folder when you visit the forum because it sounds boring. ;)

This will also be the place to find "How To" instructional threads, and to seek help on anything forum-related. The "Ask the Mods" thread from the Off-Topic folder has also been restarted here.

- "Science and Tech" has been bumped up to The Gate Room category.

- Season Seven has been merged into "Seasons One to Seven," now that it has taken its final bow in U.S. syndication. (You can still find all the official episode threads in the "Season Seven Episodes" sub-folder there.)

- The "Books" sub-folder has been taken out from under "GateWorld Features" and renamed "Stargate Merchandise." This is now the forum for all Stargate-related products -- books, video games, comics, T-shirts, calendars, action figures, etc.

- We've added a new "Alternate Universes" category for all non-Stargate genre series folders. The same "General Sci-Fi and Fantasy" folder we know and love leads it off.

- Battlestar Galactica now has episode sub-folders, which will have official threads for every episode.

- Doctor Who now has a dedicated folder.

- Firefly now has a dedicated folder.

- Lost now has a dedicated folder.

- Smallville now has a dedicated folder.

- Star Trek now has a dedicated folder.

- Stargate Role-Playing now has a dedicated folder.

- "Testing Ground" has the remnant threads that were in "About the Forum" folder and didn't get moved. Use this folder for test posting, signature tests, etc. (This folder may not stick around.)

What's Still To Come?
- Episode threads for Galactica Season One, Firefly, Lost, and Smallville Season Five still need to be created.

- Provided the new Smallville folder gets some visitors and attention, we'll finish building out the episode sub-folders for Seasons One to Four.

- We'll eventually add episode sub-folders for Doctor Who as well. (Anybody know when Season Two premieres?)

- The "Testing Ground" folder may be removed, if it becomes clear that we don't really need it.

Season Two of the new "Doctor Who" is to air sometime in the first few months of 2006, similar to Season 1.

Also just a small note, on the description for the Doctor Who section, it says "Now airing on Sky One!" - the new series of Doctor Who airs on BBC1 in the UK, not Sky One. Edit: Been Done - either before or after I wrote this.

I will be posting news on the new episodes and posting new images in the Smallville folder, so you'll be at least getting me visiting and attending to that folder.

Also, I am aware of some topics regarding DVDs and The Stargate magazine are not been moved into the merchadise folder, so shall I let a mod know so they can be moved :)

Nice new look to the forum - keep up the good work.

will you at some point be adding a charmed, buffy and angel folder? many people on the forum are fan and if lost is there i see no reason for them not to be...?

Does anyone else think that the scifi show subforums should be child forums to the sci-fi and fantasy folder like BSG used to be?

ShadowMaat
September 20th, 2005, 03:39 AM
No. I never visited the BSG section when it was a sub-forum, but now that it's a full-fledged folder, I may check it out more. It makes it easier to see them all and there's potential for further expansion in the future.

ShadowMaat
September 20th, 2005, 03:43 AM
Because those shows deal with magic and monsters whereas JJ Abrams assures us that there is a scientific explanation for everything on Lost. :P

KatG
September 20th, 2005, 04:48 AM
Nope. I like this way much better.

While I really like BSG, I would forget to check it since I wouldn't see it unless I opened SciFi Fantasy. Having it's own space in Alternate Universes makes it much more likely that I'll pop in there.

1964.

The site suggests the Christmas Invasion will be on Christmas Eve; no idea on Season 28.

I'd guess Mr Prophet was referring to the second season of Dr Who the original series. ;)
(As against the Eccleston/Tennant revival of the show.)

That's 'continuation', not revival. Everything in between was just a delay.

Bagpuss

True. :D "Continuation" after a hiatus it is then.

On the topic of the forum changes, this all seems really good to me,personally.
Much clearer and easier to navigate ,imo. :)

I personally dont like the location of the sci and tech thread, it and the ship one should be underneth, the most recent ones so it would go like:
*GD
*SGA S2
*S9
*S&T
*C&R
*SGA S1
*S8
*S1-7

I'd suggest that the News section go back to the top where it's always been. The GW features section should be below it, like it always has been. It's pretty obvious it's the more popular section.

Why fix something when it's not broken?

Qasim

Thanks for all the hard work Darren! :D

A question though....When I click on the testing ground folder, I only see one thread in it. However, when I am on the main page, it say there are 310 threads and that the last post was in the How's My Sig thread-and I see that thread when I click on it. I'm just wondering what's going on.

Hey, we rearrange the ornaments on our shelves and the furniture in our sitting rooms, even without them being broken. I liked the new rearranged forum.

As far as other shows go the new folders have been given to shows which already have a GW website section and/or had a steady big thread in our Other SF folder and are still in production. Other shows may join them, but this has been quite an expansion and we're taking it one step at a time :)

I bumped up the GateWorld Features forum to hopefully help it get a little bit more attention. Folders aren't necessarily sorted by number of posts or popularity.

I've seen several occurances of "Why doesn't [show XYZ] have its own folder?" in comments and e-mails today. Here's a short explanation.

To qualify for a dedicated folder, shows were judged against these criteria:

1) Is there enough conversation in the Sci-Fi folder to merit a dedicated folder for the show?

2) Does GateWorld have a dedicated sub-site for that show?

3) Is the show / franchise in active production, so that we have new episodes to talk about week-to-week?

4) How did the show rank in our recent interest poll (http://forum.gateworld.net/showthread.php?t=17074)?

A series doesn't need to hit 100% Yes on each of these. But if they're at 1/4 or 2/4, we decided to keep the discussion in the General Sci-Fi folder for the time being.

Star Trek, for example, gets points on #1, #2, and #4.

Doctor Who scored on #1, #3, and #4.

Lost scored 100%.

But my beloved Farscape only scored on #2, with a decent but weaker turn-out on #1 and #4. (If it goes back into production on something new, it'll almost certainly get its own folder.)

I really enjoy The Dead Zone, which scores on #2 and #3. But there currently isn't much interest in it around here, and it scores terribly on #1 and #4.

Alias: #3 only (it's still in production). I watch it and enjoy it, but neglected to even include it in the poll (which no one seemed to notice, IIRC).

Buffy / Angel: Coming up zeroes.

Things could certainly change down the road for these and other series! We've added two brand new show guides to GateWorld in just the last month, and we have ideas for others even now.

well does comin' into syndication count (for farscape)... cuz yes it is.. i believe sometime either late sept., or early oct.

Madeleine

Farscape coming into syndication might bring a few new fans to the show (I hope it does) but probably not enough to justify a whole new folder.

While I like the re-decorating of the forum, I wonder why the off topic still doesn't count towards post counts. When people come here, they post all over the board and participate in the GW community in various ways. IMHO any participation should be given the same weight as posting a picture in a thunk / appreciation thread. *

I'm just sayin'.... :)

*Not a bash against the thunk / appreciation threads, so no PM's please! :D

It would be nice, but then it would ruin the fun of that area for me, cause i go in there not to worry about post count

Madeleine
September 22nd, 2005, 11:40 PM
Some people like to play in threads where one-word posts and/or frequent posts are the norm. Most of these threads are in OT. As things stand, people who like those threads are protected from accusations of 'trying to boost your post count'.

The exception to the rule is the Thunk threads, which are counted for consistency's sake since some double as Appreciation / Discussion threads. (Still there are a few accusations of 'trying to boost your post count' against thunkers, but at least the thunkers have the pretty pictures to distract them :))

Hi guys. I am kind of new around here and I immediately fell in love with the forum's organization. I then discovered this thread and I guess that this is primarily why! Thanks for making this is a fun place to hang out and discuss these cool shows and thanks for organizing all of this information in an easy to use and logical manner. :)

So what is your take on the new scifi sections?

Have they been successful?

Are they attracting enough traffic to justify having their own folder?

I like them....the Doctor Who section has taken off nicely, and the others seem busy enough as well. There certainly seems to be more posting in the forum since they were introduced.
