View Full Version : Why was Season 9 so short

Every season has 20 or 21 episodes, correct? Why was season 9 only 10 episodes? This is assuming that I heard them say that "The Forth Horseman" was the season finale.
Am I just really confused?
What will I do if all my seasons are not the same size. I have a little OCD with things like this.

This is actually the mid-season finale.
The second half of the season will commence in January 2006 and will have 10 episodes to it although it would be nice to have more. :)

Yes, every season has their 20, 21, or 22 episodes broken up with the first half of the episodes playing form July thru September and the other half starting up in either late December or Early January and going until late April early May or there abouts.
By breaking up the season SciFi gives viewers a chance to see the first half of each season, maybe minus the "least influential episode", a second time (or first if you missed it entirely) before starting new episodes. Not to mention they are giving the actors a break to do whatever in cluding conventions and maybe starting to learn their lines for early back half of the season episodes. As far as I know, making a one hour long show is more time cnsuming than a thirty minute one.
In otherwords: They're making things sweet for us by giving everyone a chance to catch up or relive moments from early in the season in stead of bull dozing ahead and leaving people lost until the summer/spring when they go into reruns/break in between seasons.
THANK YOU SCIFI and of coure TPTB.

Well, have to say here that I haven't noticed that the UK habit of starting the season premiere in October and running the season straight through to the season finale without a break has left many fans confused. :p We seem quite able to work out what's happening week by week.
I have to admit I much prefer that to having the season broken up into two halves. But, each to their own, of course. And if it lets the actors have a break midway to do other things, all the better.

I think this was a typo on the behalf of the SCI-Fi channel. I think it should have said the MID-YEAR season finale. I believe each season now has 20 episodes. Just counted Atlantis' episodes, including the two next week, we will be at 10. So, starting in January, we'll probably see another 10. Then season 3/10 will start in July.

Christ, I wish the mods would post somthing sticky about this.
Gateworld people, you have the producer's ear, can't you get the sci-fi channel to quit confusing people?

It's been 4 years now. It's not SciFi's fault if you can't remember things properly...
Plus, SciFi promoted it as the season finale to attract more viewers. Simple.

That confused me too. I was thinking, "What do you mean, season finale? I thought we were getting more eps in January? They didn't cut S9 down to 10 eps, did they?"
But, I guess calling it a "season finale" would boost ratings, and that's a good.

With cliffhangers and three month hiatus, it may as well be a finale.

Part of it is marketing. By starting the season in the summer when the major networks are mainly running reruns, SciFi can get better ratings with its first run episodes of SG1, SGA, and BSG. Then in the fall, the networks roll out the new shows, so SciFi puts its shows on hiatus. Other networks like USA do the same thing with Monk and the 4400, running them in the summer, knowing it's hard to compete with the big boys the rest of the year.

Hmmm... I got into stargate around season 5 and bought all the back episodes, and now I own them all. But you would think since season 5 and on I would have noticed such a thing. Oh, Well I guess I can wait a few months. I totally did not expect Gerek to be an ORI puppet, but now I can really hate him. Teal'c should just rip his ugly head off.

also all the new shows and returning shows on all the other networks are having their season premieres these few weeks.
By having Stargate and Atlantis premiere in July when everyone is out of school and having it broadcasted in the evening (8 and 9 pm) they capture a much larger audience because teenagers can watch it and adults can watch it after dinner and afterwards they can still go out and party on the friday nights.
Furthermore, it wouldn't clash as much with the new & returning shows that are being broadcasted. For example, Stargate Season 9 episode 10 last night at 9 clashed with the 2 hours season premiere of Threshold, a really good new show. I think they lost a bit of their audience at season 10 because some people like my friends and I would rather watch it when it a re-runned around december so there would be less of a gap btw episode 10 and 11.
