Its the biggest SG forum
But in terms of all forums some have 50,000 members

As I understand it it's not the size of the forum that matters but how well it's used.
At least that's what I'm told. Regularly.

Yeah, it's like the old quote, "size dosen't matter." You can have a small list or board, with perhaps a few dozen folk on it, but get the best and most meaningful conversations out of it, or a board with literally thousands, and have to crawl through a gazillion 'me too' posts to find anything relevant.
One thing I like about mailing lists is the lack of signature lines. Well, you get them but not with a ton of graphics as Yahoo strips 'em out. There are times that I will avoid threads on GW just due to the overwhelming repetition of the same graphics over and over again (and also, too many 'me too' posts).
However, I'd say that 'ship' lists in most fandoms tend to be very prolific, although when the ship ends, the lists peeter out.

Well, comparing the relative sizes of various forums could, for instance, show whether or not the bugginess that has been plaguing Gateworld for months is also symptomatic in ALL large forums or if it's something particular to Gateworld. Or to Vbulletin. Or to the types of servers the forum is on. Or if it's just a case of reality asserting itself. ;)
It could also show, as another example, if all large forums eventually devolve into petty little b*tchfests where folks troll, attack each other, and belabor minor points rather than sticking to the subject of a given thread/forum.
Maybe it'll prove that popularity isn't such a grand thing after all.

Aaahhh...the old motion of the ocean argument.
With respect to size, I would think that the larger the group, the more diverse the ideas being generated. Whereas a few folks might have reasonably in-depth discussions which are intellectually satisfying ("the 863 ways Sam has secretly professed her love for Jack, listed alphabetically"), a really large group will probably lead to wackier conversations topics being debated ("so who would win if a wraith fought an Ori while travelling IN a wormhole?"). I guess the downside is that you do have to fight your way through a bunch of "Me Too" comments.

Well i on the contrary think that size does matter ;]

Compared to Stargate forums, I believe we're the largest. Unless you try to compare GW to the official SciFi.com boards, where the membership level is really the sum total of all site memberships for all forums and non-forum features. Or to the Usenet lists, where there is no membership required.
Compared to all forums of any topic online, we're mid-level. Bigger than most, but not a power player by any means. ;)

well iv'e seen the future and people use a micro implant in their heads and have unlimited access to all infomation in the solarsystem anyway GateWorld will by the year 2034 have 789.892.232 members when the series has 2 other spin offs and 6 films and the series makes a come back on some weird little device people have in their homes akin to the hologram but im not too sure on that as the human race then didt seem to have much to say they just watched the TV all day no need for work lets just say when the SG franchise is passed around following the sad passing away of two of the writters and one producer in old age the show does unfortunately go down the hill fast, but hey the human race are zombies so who cares eh?
in case there was any misunderstanding i was making that up but i would be extremely interested to know how long this site remains and how many members it eventually gets because as many may think i think this site is no where near its prime, that is because of the mass storylines and the direction the frnchise could go in in the future. ;)

(note haven't read the thread...drive-thru post!)
To the best of my knowledge...there's only two forums as big as GW...SG1 Archive and SG1 Database...both of those have 10 000+ members.

On a scale of 1-10 maybe a 5? http://forums.ifskinzone.net they've got a large member count (I was staff there :D). They've got 95,000 members and they're only ranked 407 on that big-boards ranking system. But yeah gaia is biggest.

Let me get this straight...a forum dedicated to a group of strong, body-building people who presumably exercise a lot outside...is larger than a forum filled with sci-fi fans who may or may not fit the stereotypical life-less nerd?
The world is so weird sometimes...

We are a very dedicated group, knowledge is #1 in the Irongame. A lot of people want to learn how to weight lift properly, how to supplement the right way and how to diet to gain muscle. God bless them all.
I would rather see forums full of people wanting to better themselves physically than a bunch of lard butts spending all day playing online games.

For me personally, this is my favorite site to visit. I have always been a huge scifi fan from the time I first watched Lost in Space as a kid and then when The Next Generation came out my interest in scifi was reborn. Ever since I joined this wonderful forum my interest and more importantly my knowledge of scifi has been enhanced big time!.

LOL, gee that's the first time I ever heard that joke  NOT! ;)
We have sections for everything including chemical enhancement (steroids), age groups, years of lifting experience, supplementation, teenagers, a section where Drs. who are regular visitors offer medical advice, powerlifting and strongman stuff, exercise science, yoga, stretching, alternative lifestyles, buy and sell workout equipment, topic of the week (which is rather cool), and then all the regular misc. off topic stuff you see on other forums.
Personally the site has grown to big for my taste, I run a few sections along with a few other fellow Mods., I rarely go into other sections of the forum.

See, Rob, I do show up from time to time.
Does anyone know if the membership size of a site means anything more for the site than bragging rights? Just curious.
