Seniority Mitchell has been that rank longer Also O'Neill said he could have any command he wanted

Because all team members of SG-1 moved onto other jobs. SG-1 was reformed with Mitchell as the leader.

Had SG-1 never officially disbanded Carter would have remained in command. Mitchell appears to have a little bit more time in grade but that would not have been releavant given they are both Lt Cols and Carter has more experience. Mitchell had expected, and would have, served under Carters command had she not accepted the job as head of R&D at Area 51.

Now they have reformed a brand New SG-1 with Mitchell in the lead and able to choose whoever he wants on the team. He just wanted the previous people, and because of the threat of the Ori, they all agreed to rejoin the team.

Thats the in-show reason....
The real life reason is because TPTB want a male lead.

Thanks for the link Qasim. The topic of this thread is different to the topic stated at the beginning of the other thread. This thread is more about the leadership of SG1 than the ranks. So I have changed the thread title to reflect this.
