Custom Avatar

Hi how do i use a custom avatar, ive seen ppl with avatars that dont show up in the avatar list in the cp and i cant find any option to u/l an avatar.
Help anyone??

Once you've reached 1801 posts or so, you'll be able to upload your own av. Until then, you must cope with av envy. :P

You don't get to have a custom avatar until you have 1800+ posts. When you have 800 posts, you will have a larger choice from the avatars in 'my controls'.:)

Seriousy what's the biggy with avs? This question is being raised all the time lately, shouldn't it be in FAQ's. The mystery of when you can get a custom av has gone out the window it's been posted numerous times when it happens. IMO people post threads like this as a way of hopefully changing Darrens mind and letting us have custom av's earlier.

IMO the only way to stop threads like these is to either lay it on the line in the FAQ or to let us have custom av's from the start.

I like custom avs because I'm a fan of a great many shows and stuff, not just Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis... They also don't have avs for some characters or pictures I would like to have...

I mean, they'd NEVER have a Sark/Vaughn animated av for me to use :P

The 801/1801 levels are good to have but sometimes I wonder if it'd be better if they had quite a few more levels, restricting the choices when people join and slowly giving them more, then maybe people wouldn't be so disatisfied with having to wait so long, it's nice having something to look forward, but 801 and 1801 are a very long way for many.

It all depends on your posting habits. If you make 50 posts a day, you'll hit 1800 posts in 3 months. If you don't post a lot, then it will take quite awhile. Keep in mind that posting in the Off Topic threads WON'T increase your post count. I joined gateworld in Nov of 2004, and just hit 1800 posts tonight. Again, your posting habits will determine how long it takes you to reach 1800 posts. :)

Do you use Photoshop?I just use the crop feature on a normal image viewer and MS Paint. I don't have an image manipulation program, nor am I willing to pay for one. I'm way too poor. :( If you want to ensmallen an image you can use ImageVenue (www.imagevenue.com). Just enter the largest dimension you want the the site will preserve the aspect ratio and give you an image in the size you specify. I find lots of bass-ackwards ways of doing it so I don't have to spend money on PhotoShop. :P

I know it big file, it take me 1 and half hour done this :-(Hi, Welcome to GW, unfortunately you cannot use a custom avatar until you have at least 1801 posts yes that is right 1801 posts. You can however put your own pic in your profile page. And you can have almost anything in your sig (see GW rules and FAQ).

Encouragement to all those wishing to have a custom avatar, but aren't at 1,800 posts yet: Don't give up! I've wanted a custom avatar ever since i joined GateWorld, but i had to wait until 1800 posts. Depending on your posting habits, it may take you anywhere from 4 weeks to 8 months. (It took me 9 and half months to get to 1800 posts). Yes, there are people out there who could easily post 100 times a day (in the threads where your posts count. In the Off-topic section, your posts DO NOT count toward your total post count). :)

But doesn't that just give people more incentive to post one or two word posts? Maybe this whole post count thing has become passe. I'm seeing more and more ridiculous posts, with little or no meaning and often way OT, just to up post counts. I'll admit to posting alot when I first started on the Forum, but I tried to add to the discussion, not just post anything to up my count.

Wouldn't it be easier either to provide more and better avatars or just allow everyone to use a custom avatar? It seems like the whole post count thing has gotten way out of control, but that's just my quarter (inflation).:rolleyes:

Yes but people join Forums for all sorts of reason's and most people here I think do post sensibly, yes in some thread like Thunks just for example, you do get the "Aw nice pic's" type posts but even then I have to ask what is so wrong with expressing appreciation without long winded replies? But I have noticed people with custom avatars still posting silly posts just stroll over to the "Ask the Mods" thread. :rolleyes: I am guilty of it but only because I get bored.

It is not just the choice but the type and style a lot of the avatars although nice they are not unique or expressive of the person that uses them how can they be? Plus just because this is a Stargate Forum doesn't mean people aren't fans of other shows, and within reason why shouldn't they have the choice of using avatars referencing other shows? I am very happy with my Dr Who ones and I make no apologies for having a non Stargate avatar. :cool:

I still think 500 posts would be enough you would have to stay around for at least a month (surly longer) before you get that many and well by then you will know if you really want to remain a member and I think that was the point to begin with *encouragement*. :cool: I suppose I was lucky in a way because when I joined I was on an extended holiday and was bored out of my mind! :rolleyes: So I posted in a lot of threads in the beginning and well I post a lot in about three or four threads sometimes short sometimes longer and sometimes too long. *like here* ;)

I am just glad I have mine now and hope the rules aren't changed. :p

This is the only hint he would give me about the new number :S :
"It's a big, round number."

I was hoping that it might be 2,000 - but seeing that the Fifth Man has 2,002 and still no avatar, it seems like it might be a lot more. :(

Oh well, it's their forum/their rules. It will come when it comes, I guess... :cool:

The only reason I'm eager to get my custom avatar, is because i want to but the pic of the pyramid blowing up (from Full Circle). Although I am (somewhat) getting use to the Asgard avatars.

It comes up either URL error (can't remember exact wording) or invalid file.

I thought maybe the file size 7.8 kb was the problem, but then why do sigs work? :S Also gifs work so why not random avatars? Any ideas?:cool:

My rant (and really my only beef with GW) is that while I know it's a perk to have your own avatar as a reward, I get really tired of seeing people post for the sake of posting in order to get to the number needed. Not that everyone does it, but I've seen double posts, and posts that don't contribute to the thread discussion and are just "filler" [i.e. the two word posts]. I may not post often, but I like to feel that when I do, I'm contributing to what is being discussed.

Maybe length of membership could also be taken into account, not just post number?

The 801/1801 levels are good to have but sometimes I wonder if it'd be better if they had quite a few more levels, restricting the choices when people join and slowly giving them more, then maybe people wouldn't be so disatisfied with having to wait so long, it's nice having something to look forward, but 801 and 1801 are a very long way for many.
you ain't kiddy some times i don't have the time to post during the week so by the time i get to 801 and 1801. both shows will be done and all the members will leave the forums and i'll be posting by myself:lol:
