    Name combinations: Yay or Nay?

Since a lot of time and effort seems to be devoted to coming up with cutesy name combinations, and since almost as much time is spent condemning the practice, I figured I'd start a thread for it for people to discuss.

Keep in mind that the purpose of this thread is to discuss the combinations, ONLY. Try and keep it respectful, and if anyone feels that it is NOT, say so. Or if it gets bad enough, report the thread. This is to discuss the combinations, not the shippers, themselves, although in this case it can be a little hard to distinguish.

Personally, I cannot find words to describe my utter abhorrence for combining names. I find it massively disrespectful of the characters, and of the actors who work so hard to make their characters REAL AND SEPARATE INDIVIDUALS, not a Frankenstein's monster of amalgamated parts.

I also find it incredibly immature. To me, it seems more like something you'd hear in grade school than something you'd hear in a real, adult conversation.

I know some people think it's cutesy and fun, but I find it impossible to take a ship seriously when it calls itself "Shweir" or "McShep" or any of the other myriad combinations. Some things, like Smor, are meant to be kinda silly and frivolous, but I don't understand how ANYONE who genuinely wants to see two characters get together can expect themselves or their ship to be taken seriously when they make up such silly names for themselves.

What is so wrong with spelling out the names?? And if you can't (or won't) spell them out, why not reduce them to letters? Shep/Teyla can be S/T. Maybe it takes a bit more time to figure out what S/T stands for, but some of the combinations take JUST as long to decipher. At least for me. And there are some which I can't understand at all. I refuse to even click on the thread to see. If I can't figure out from the subject line what the thread is about, I can't be bothered to look inside for the answer. And frankly, the fact that it's a name combo says all it needs to about what kind of content I'll find inside. And since I detest most/all forms of ship, be they combos or orhterwise, I'll steer clear of it.

    Smor is serious

I find the combinations funny its just a bit of fun - and if they are disrespectful then I wonder what word would be used for some of the stuff that goes on in the thunk threads
gumboYaYa: you are all beautiful, your words and openness are what make that shine. don't forget how much talent love and beauty you all have.
so for now, peace love love love more love and happy, and thank you, thank you, thank you

Don't like them! They sound stupid! How hard is it to write Shep/Weir instead of Shweir or Shep/Teyla instead of Sheyla (don't get me started on that pornstar name!!!)

Using just letters can be confusing. For example, S/J could be Sam/Jack but it could also be Sam/Janet. And J/D could be Janet/Daniel or Jack/Daniel. It gets tricky.

I've taken to using S/T or S/W, with the exception of SMOR or SHEX (which are just in fun. . .mostly. *LOL*).

"Sheyla" I absolutely detest as it refers to a porn star (Google it). I've been told that "Shweir" refers to certain body parts in British slang (or was that Scottish. .I forget. *LOL*).

As for the new "Rockett" ship (Rodney/Beckett). I actually find that name kinda cute.

Bah. I hate those name combinations, but I find myself using some of them anyway

The one I hate the most and I will never use isn't for a pairing but it's 'Replicarter'

            It's Replicator Carter, damnit!

Note: User's posts are rarely serious.

Most S/W shippers don't use Shweir, at least not on this board. Some other shippers might use it but that's up to them.

                cutesy names... ack!

                    Sheyla is just funny

Name combining is a little silly but then all shippers are alittle bit crazy . In Stargate shipping except Sam/Jack is all about interpretation of moments. So IMO shipping threads in general aren't that serious, just abit of fun.

                    BTW Replicarters cool

Google "sheyla", and you get porn. Google "shweir" and you get the website of a town in Lebanon, or a lot of Shep/Weir stuff.

But in general, name combos are for sucks.

Lol, I did a poll for this at Livejournal a while back.

Shipper Name Combo - Yay, nay or eh

Ba'am and Rockett are the exceptions, those are slightly cute.
