Since a lot of time and effort seems to be devoted to coming up with cutesy name combinations, and since almost as much time is spent condemning the practice, I figured I'd start a thread for it for people to discuss.
Keep in mind that the purpose of this thread is to discuss the combinations, ONLY. Try and keep it respectful, and if anyone feels that it is NOT, say so. Or if it gets bad enough, report the thread. This is to discuss the combinations, not the shippers, themselves, although in this case it can be a little hard to distinguish.
Personally, I cannot find words to describe my utter abhorrence for combining names. I find it massively disrespectful of the characters, and of the actors who work so hard to make their characters REAL AND SEPARATE INDIVIDUALS, not a Frankenstein's monster of amalgamated parts.
I also find it incredibly immature. To me, it seems more like something you'd hear in grade school than something you'd hear in a real, adult conversation.
I know some people think it's cutesy and fun, but I find it impossible to take a ship seriously when it calls itself "Shweir" or "McShep" or any of the other myriad combinations. Some things, like Smor, are meant to be kinda silly and frivolous, but I don't understand how ANYONE who genuinely wants to see two characters get together can expect themselves or their ship to be taken seriously when they make up such silly names for themselves.
What is so wrong with spelling out the names?? And if you can't (or won't) spell them out, why not reduce them to letters? Shep/Teyla can be S/T. Maybe it takes a bit more time to figure out what S/T stands for, but some of the combinations take JUST as long to decipher. At least for me. And there are some which I can't understand at all. I refuse to even click on the thread to see. If I can't figure out from the subject line what the thread is about, I can't be bothered to look inside for the answer. And frankly, the fact that it's a name combo says all it needs to about what kind of content I'll find inside. And since I detest most/all forms of ship, be they combos or orhterwise, I'll steer clear of it.
