I was just watching that episode on DVD and there was something that confused me. When Marty talks about his dreams and visions he tells Jack that he sometimes sees symbols which are as we know when he show them to Jack are gate coordinates. I was wondering why he knows what the piont of origin symbol of earth looks like. I mean his visions are fragments of his memory, right, and he and the others came to earth by a spaceship so how can he know the PoO symbol?
Boomer359
June 2nd, 2004, 08:42 AM
Well, his culture was pretty advanced. Maybe they had a record of where they came from or figured out what Earth's PoO was by cross referencing the symbols on their gate with the addresses they had visited.
Short answer, though, is that it served the plot...

I always look forward to the motel room scene with 'Murray', Jack and Marty. Teal'c laying on that bed just cracks me up for some reason. And I want to know who is humming in that scene!

IIRC on the DVD Commentaires they say that it is RDA who decided to hum because they way the copyright issued worked for that movie they could get the video for free but they would have had to pay for the audio, so RDA said 'I'll hum'.

i was watching this episode and had to laugh, as a Montanan and one who has visited Billings twice, it is nothing like in the stargate ep.
it would be great if it was, the real billings is fairly barren, mostly small shrubs and field grass, there are a few mountains in the distance, but it is flat. it's not the semi-rain forest like in the show.
i know the 'billings' was really Vancouver area, British Columbia. i thought that the disparity was kind of funny.

Not to mention that in the end the episode just falls flat.

I agree that they could have made a lot more seriousness of the episode in general, but my guess is they wanted a comedy type of show here and there. I don't mid them as long as they do actually have purporse!

I think marty made this episode and lets face it without him a later epidode wouldn't happen. I liked the way they turned the episode from weird geek who knows too much, to an alien who is speaking the truth. Some really funny scenes in it as well almost all the ones with marty and someone else.
MARTY-* Say guys thats a nice coloured van would you say it was a gray-green colour! (into his lapel)* seemed so out of place in any conversation which made it funny. I get the feeling him and jack got on, on quite a few levels. And teal'c with the vibrating bed wasn't commented on which is a shame. :D

Was I the only one that thought Marty's house was hella cool? Anyway, I thought it was funny that they were poking fun at conspiracy theorists when the entire Stargate premise is based off a real conspiracy theory. Pretty funny stuff, with a nice twist.
At any rate, I had gotten "Groundhog Day" out of the library because I heard it was what they based "Window of Opportunity" off of - and it has the guy who plays Marty in it! He only has like two lines, but he's there in the news studio in the beginning. He's about ten years less bald, but that really doesn't mean much.
Coincidentally, I watched Total Recall for the first time yesterday...and it has the guy who plays Senator Kinsey as the evil politician! Talk about'cher type casting.
I would definitely reccommend both movies, but for opposite reasons.

I just watched this episode last night on DVD. Teal'c had some great scenes. Taking coins from Jack to use on the bed and then laying down with such a satisfied smile cracks me up every time. His little stint as a chef was great as well. Judge can get away with not saying anything and be the funniest part of the show. I loved the intro too btw, "I was just about to do something important." - Jack

In the commentary for the episode they said it would have been too expensive to get permission to use the movie soundtrack so RDA hummed.

It was Jack humming. The soundtrack on THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, I think, and correct me if I'm wrong, was one of the first to use a Moog Synthesizer, giving the movie a very unearthly feel. So it was quite distinct. As someone else learned from the commentary, they couldn't use the actual soundtrack itself, so Jack was humming....It was very funny.
Also, like everyone else, I loved "Murray" enjoying the 25 cent massage beds.

I didn't like martin in any of the other episodes he did, however in this particular episode he is quite entertaining. I didn't care for the premise of this episode, but it was the little facial expressions and quotes that made it worth while.
The best line had to be when they were dragging him through the forest and he says something like "cool van, what would you call that color kinda a grayish green huh".

Great episode, I love how Martin befriended "Murray" so quickly despite apparently trying to fight him earlier on.
I just saw the ep for the second time, I have to say, I can see both points of view on people liking and disliking Murray. The first time I saw it I thought he was hilarious, the second time I saw him, I thought his voice was so annoying. He gives so much misinformation that it is a wonder they took him seriously, but he had enough for believability.
And yes, I remember him on Groundhog Day as the insurance salesman, he was so annoying in that but in a hilarious way. "Am I right or am I right? Or am I right??" Anyways, I think he serves his purpose in the show, writing and acting wise, not everyone will like his character. I can say that though I thought he was annoying at times, the episode would not hold up without him.
And another person posted this along time ago, but I agree with them that Martin's house is awesome. It was one of the first things I remembered about this episode before watching it again, though it is only about a 15 second shot of his spaced out living room. I am wondering if that is a real living room of someone's they found, as that would have cost a lot to buy the like 1,000 little items packed in there.
Teal'c was hilarious throughout, and also as a Chef. I also liked that part with the note in the resturaunt, he is about to leave and suddenly he gets a check that says, "stall him!" so they go look for his spaceship.
Martin looks and acts nothing like his fellow aliens, I always wondered why he was so different from them, they are all tall in suits and look alike, they could practically be 4 brothers. Martin doesn't seem to 'match' them, and they never explain why or if there is a reason, but that's allright. Good episode.

I liked this episode and thought it was a good send up of conspiracy nuts. I only had a few questions about it.
First: Why did SG-1 conduct a warrant-less search on Marty's house? I realize that they didn't want to reveal details of the SGC to a judge who would have to approve it, but I would think that the fact that Marty was making semi-threatening phone calls to a USAF base, directed towards specific officers, would be probable cause enough to get some kind of warrant.
Second: Was Marty reading NID web forums, and if so, are they hiding them in plain sight on places similar to Above Top Secret (http://www.abovetopsecret.com) or other conspiracy websites? The advantage to doing that would be to create a degree of plausible deniability.

I thought the humor worked very well. I was disappointed, but not surprised, to see more advanced technology lost. I assume that SGC never bothered searching that planet for any remnants.
I'm not a big fan of formula TV shows and SG-1 really seemed to stick with the formula of finding NO TECH in the early seasons. I prefer the major plot related episodes.

Decent, quite funny but the humour is hit-and-miss for me. Martin Lloyd flits between great and a bit annoying for me. My favourite episode with him was '200', and I thought 'Wormhole X-Treme' was pretty bad. This one falls squarely in the middle of those two. A nice X-Files vibe to the whole thing, good to see Matthew Bennet from BSG in an earlier role.
I enjoy the first half of the episode a lot more than the second. The jokes are better, and once Martin's alien friends appear they make the whole thing a bit dull. My favourite line is probably Daniels, "That's a duck, isn't it?"
This episode also wins the award for most boring commentary track so far. Wow. (But at least it doesn't have James Tichenor constantly going, "Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.")
RATING: 7.5 out of 10

SG probably has some overarching opt out like other secret agencies - theres probably some unseen bureaucratic process involving forms in triplicate that have to be signed off by Hamond

One of my least favourite episodes. I never liked Martin Lloyd. The episode has some funny parts to it, especially undercover Teal'c, or should I say Murry? I like how he finds amusement out of the oddest things - vibrating bed, his smile was priceless. Other than a few pieces here and there, the episode wasn't good.

Great and funny episode.
Loved the Jack meta line "That would make a good TV Show." Also, any scene with Teal'c in it was awesome.
Stuff from the commentary:
Joe and Paul (finally) do a commentary
They note how creative the costume department is when Teal'c goes out in the public
When we first see the inside of Martin's house, the magnifying glass on the aliens was an idea of Will Waring
Tomorrow, Jack and Teal'c try out Earth's new space-based ship, and absolutely nothing goes wrong ;).

Me, too, and for the same reason. The other two have a lot inside joking about the television industry. They feel self-indulgent, which isn't an awful thing, but I have no interest in TV industry politics, jokes, etc.

Ah the first of many SG1 episodes that involve stakeouts. I even love Daniel's line of are we suppose to bring doughnuts. It has nothing to do with the NID which is why I like it so much. It is something different then the planet of the week stories and I find it interesting to see the covert goverment watching some crackpots believe in. It is also interesting to see the insight into Marty and his role as an alien and the role Tanner and his men did to hide the secret from the local population of Earth. But how do you hide an explosion that big?:P

I am dense with this episode as well. Marty a SOLDIER in intergalactic war against the goa'uld who they couldn't defeat? Doesn't make sense. Also, even if they arrived on Earth, it means they are advanced enough to engage in intergalactic travel without a stargate, so how did Marty find out about the idea of stargate, not to mention SGC and O'Neil??
What did his "friends" mean by the "experiment"?? It was their escape pod. Do these aliens return for another episode, and had Marty been more sophisticated he could have even been integrated into the SGC.

And isn't his home planet worth further investigation reconnaissance to find out what happened there, what their society was like, weaponry, technology, etc.??? It seemed as if Marty's cotravelers didn't know anything about a stargate and were mystified about what Teal'c had in his belly. Presumably if they were fighting the goa'ulds they would have known about the Jaffa.....

Dave2, a number of the questions in your first post would be answered if you listened to the commentary. As for the phone number--there is almost certainly a public contact number for the base (Cheyenne Mountain). From there the call would be routed to the appropriate people. I take it you don't work for a large corporation...

No, but the SGC is a top secret operation even only ostensibly under the oversight of the President and the Joint Chiefs. So how is it likely for the SGC Cheyenne Mountain operation to have an accessible phone number?

Phone number for Norad: (719) 554-6889.
That took me less than a minute to find. And Marty explained that he learned about the SGC on conspiracy websites that talked about a secret base below norad in Cheyenne mountain. He would have had no problem making that call. The operator took Marty's call; recorded it and passed it on to Hammond.

What hlndncr said. Marty didn't need a number for the SGC. He only needed a number for Cheyenne Mountain.

And let me just say that you probably shouldn't call that number and ask to speak with someone at Stargate Command. Although, I'm willing to bet you wouldn't be the first to do so.
You can however call them and ask where Santa is. They've been tracking his sleigh since 1955.

Apparently Jay Felger gave it to his Mom. She called him in his lab at the SGC in "Avenger 2.0". :D

I work for a very large corporation (150,000 employees world wide, plus subsidiaries). I have a direct dial number, which I could give my mother. But if you call the general number for my corporation, they won't give you my direct dial unless you prove you also work for the same corporation. They will connect you to me (or my voice mail), but they won't give out the number.
My guess is that Jay's lab has a direct dial number, which he gave his mother for emergency use only. His mother's interpretation of 'emergency' however, is flexible. :D

OK, but Norad is not the SGC. And where did he hear of the stargate to begin with and O'Neil?

Well we know the media was sniffing round Jack in the S2 ep Secrets therefore it's reasonable to assume that if there was a leak that far back, enough bits and pieces would make it online by S4.

It would not be a stretch of the imagination that the NORAD and SGC switchboards are the same. And Marty clearly states that he learned about the stargate and O'Neill through conspiricy chatrooms.
I think you need to rewatch the episodes more than once if you are having such trouble grasping the details. And you should also realize that the writers consider their audiance sophisticated enough to fill in the gaps with reasonable explanations as we have done here. If you can't accept that then you are watching the wrong show. I for one don't want the show to waste story telling time telling me step by step how Marty might have gathered his information. It's a reasonable enough scenario that I can merely assume that it was done.

Criticism acknowledged and accepted, hlndcr. As I posted elsewhere, I am often so impacted by the extent of realism that I have unrealistic expectations of them filling in all the gaps to provide a fuller context, especially as the potential basis for more elements in future shows, i.e. the original planet of Marty, what happened with the goa'uld war, the survivors, etc. etc. the "experiment," etc. No harm done.

This website's episode summaries include questions about each episode touching on the context and details, much like the type of questions I ask. Take this page for example: http://www.gateworld.net/sg1/s4/411.shtml

You'd have to ask Darren about that. I think he wrote a lot of those ep guides around the time the ep aired.
What I'm saying is that there are going to be plot holes and it's perfectly valid to point them out. But I think some holes just aren't critical to understanding the story and/or can be explained away sufficiently in many different ways that don't need to be spelled out explicitly. That is my position at least. If you're looking for definitive answers for these things for the most part they just aren't out there. Some things come up in later eps, but most of the time you just have to use your imagination. I'm perfectly capable of doing that and in fact enjoy doing so. If the suggestions we've provided here for how those holes can be squared away don't satisfy you then how would you explain it? Because if you're convinced that it's unexplainable and impossible then I can only conclude that you don't really like the show.

The Day the Earth Stood Still
Jack's scifi humming and Teal'c's vibrating bed are among the funnier parts of this ep, for sure. Teal'c's enjoyment of newspaper rags does set up for Daniel to learn about his professor in The Curse, but otherwise, the ep just unfolds nice and slow with odd bits of humor to lighten the day. Like Jack's face while Martin's explaining his implants. Priceless!

This was good. Martin was portrayed as a real nutter. I feel sorry for those real conspiracy theorists out there.
Did I just see a Cylon ??? I think so, but couldn't find the info about the full cast ...

The only thing about this episode that stands out to me is that I sat through and watched the entire Sex in the City series with my wife but have to watch Stargate alone and endure her ridicule.
Otherwise, boring episode.

I thought this was a lovely ep, with some charming moments. And how cute is Marty?!
