I live in Kinloss, Moray next to the RAF base here.
It's usually really quiet here apart from the noise from the Nimrods and Lossie's Tornado's. At the moment we've been swamped with tourists, mostly Germans who arrive by the bus load down at the beach....good for a giggle at their (lack of) fashion sense. Hopefully they'll bugger off soon and I can walk the dog in peace again.:)

Scottish sport is one thing I can do without...
Apart from when there's a golf tournament on...then I help out at a local takeway with the deliveries and get huge tips off of the caddies!
One of the other girls got given a 50 pound tip from Ernie Els' caddie!

Scottish sport!?? maybe it is rubbish but i'll support the football team to the ends of the earth. In fact, im quietly confident that we can beat Italy... i'm probably alone in this confidence, but ah well. :D

Scottish sport? I always say I'm not going to watch it, because our football/rugby teams give us a glimmer of hope and then get beaten. :( Our time will come, I'm sure of it. Cant be bothered with the SPL but have Rangers and Celtic fans in the house - such fun

I seem to remember a line about Scottish martial arts in the Mike Myers comedy So I Married An Axe Murderer? "It's called f**k you, and seems to involve kicking people when they're down..." :D
Anyway, there was a story in my local paper a week or two ago that'll either have you laughing your bums off, shaking your heads in despair, or both.
On my part of the Clyde, there's the wreck of a sugar ship that ran aground and almost sank in a storm about 30-odd years ago (it been there for as long as I can remember anyway). It lies on a sandbank on it's port side, happily rusting away, bothering no one.
Recently, Clyde Coastguard had to bring several people off the wreck for their own safety.
What were they doing there? Five adults (and I use the term loosely), two kids and (wait for it) a dog, were having a picnic...
Not only that, they were using a camping stove to cook food, they had no safety gear at all - and, to use a direct quote from the article "Alcohol was believed to be involved."
I've no idea what happened to them, but hopefully someone called the Police and the RSPCA.
Potential entrants for the Darwin Awards next year methinks...

Alright, i thought i'd keep this thread going by asking a question...
It's already been asked in the "calling all brits thread" but people here should be a bit more experienced! What do you prefer on your chips??? I prefer salt 'n' vinegar myself. The thing i want to know is, IMHO it's superior with vinegar, why do folk on the east coast put Salt 'n' Sauce on theirs!? I can even see something like mayo on the side, but i just don't see the appeal! Anyone from the east coast like Edinburgh or Kircaldy, speak up!!

Anyone from the west coast like Edinburgh or Kircaldy, speak up!!
Ermm.... isn't Edinburgh on the east coast? lol :) From an "east coast" perspective anyway - it HAS to be salt and sauce, yum. Its bland without it. I was so upset when we were on holiday in the lakes and we had to have a chippy without sauce.

30p for ketchup - man that's bad :( Sauce should be free whatever the flavour.
When I was at school, we were always shouted at for speaking Scottish - like not pronouncing our t's correctly. I love the Scottish accent, but then I am biased. What used to really get on my wick when I worked in a shop was tourists refusing to take Scottish notes (not even just pound notes all notes).

Sha're I work at Loch Lomond Shores and the dirty looks I get if I give tourists or non-scots Scottish money in their change.

Yup...most people won't take it, but it completely legal. It REALLY pi$$es me off when people look at you like you're a freak for giving them scots money...and IMVHO...i prefer our notes (though we could do with some new £5 notes...)

The best bag of chips i've ever had was in Aberdeen. It was at the Harry Ramsden's on the shore near the fair ground thingy. (if you're ever there, check it out!!) It's an "add your own salt and vineger" place. I went a little overboard on the former!!
Egeria
September 4th, 2005, 04:32 PM
For for funky money you should see the money in N.Ireland. Most of it is similar to our money, but they have this £5 note, which is really plastic-y with a transparent window on it. The othere half tried to use it on a bus from Aberdeen airport home, the driver was having none of it.....good job he had some 'real' money on him.:)

It was a Harry Ramsden's (however you spell it!) but now that you mention it, in the years when i was in Aberdeen before that, there was another one on the corner of a block of shops that wasn't open last time. i can't remember the name though. They made good chips as well actually!!

No sadly we didn't - but we had a great time. When we were up in The Black Isle, we stopped the car in a wee village and were looking at a map. There was a group of teenage lads staring at us, the one came over and said "are you lost - can I help at all?" He then stood with us for about 10 mins telling us everything there was to see in the area. I was so impressed, we Scots are such a nice bunch eh?

SueKay I'm envious. You live in a lovely part of this country. For me the Cairngorms are just down the road, but it must be lovely to live a stone's throw away from the Loch.

But we're talking about folk's jobs. Merge our regiments and many people'll be out of work. True, it's just like any other job in which companies can change their minds about numbers of employees etc. but it's much more in the public eye and many people will oppose it. To quote SG on many occasions, it would probably be political suicide.

Correct, this countries military can be as large or as small as we want it. We could have a smaller military, depends on how we foresee using it. At the moment I would say we're struggling. We honestly don't have enough numbers for the operations this government has dragged us into.

Just for once, I'd like to see something like the Household Cavalry disbanded. Does a modern army really need a regment of soldiers who're trained to sit on horseback and look pretty while tourists take pictures of them?
I've said this before and I'll probably say it again - If Bush Snr. had done his job properly in 1991, we wouldn't be in this mess. Similarly, Bush Jnr. only got re-elected because Daddy's a former director of the CIA and "knows where the bodies are buried".

Okay, I'll admit that I used to wach the American Indy Car racing. Problem with that is Channel 5 only shows an hour's worth of highlights, and doesn't publicise it, so I've no idea when the start of season is - don't wanna start watching and suddenly find it's the last race of the championship, do I?

You know, it's near impossible to find anyone who likes football in this forum, and i've just found 3 in the space of 5mins!!
As for Brutak's question, i think we've had this discussion before in a computer games thread, i remember you asked the same question!! For me, it's all about the tactics and the excitement of picking a team and sticking to it. I mean, sure everyone likes the old firm games, but there's no fun in supporting them. it's just too easy. There is trully nothing better than the last 20mins of a tight game where each team tries to outsmart each other with end-to-end stuff resulting in a win for your team. It's breathtaking at times.

However, the first words out of Mum's mouth when we got home - not "Are you alright?", or "Go to your room and think about what you've done", or anything like that, my mother's exact words *places hand on heart to show I'm not telling fibs* were "What will the neighbours think?"

I found this series of Still Game a little less enjoyable than the others, although it still had its moments. It just seemed to have lost its edge a little and relied too often on crudeness over the sharp scripts it's had in the past. Still love the show though - Jack and Victor have come up with some classic moments over the years. I don't think I've ever laughed so much at anything as the time that fridge fell into the car, just after they managed to sell it.
I think part of its appeal is in the great cast of characters they have surrounding Jack and Victor. Isa and Navid are my absolute favourites. Who in Scotland hasn't known an Isa at some point in their lives? Oh and the neds. They just have to open their mouths and I'm ROTFLMAO. The character studies are marvellous.
And I love the way that - like all the best comedies - it can be hilariously funny one moment and achingly poignant the next. The episode where poor Victor is convinced his son is coming to visit despite Jack's pessimism can still bring a lump to my throat when I watch it.

No, but I saw him recently in a fun, fascinating little documentary about the Scots language in comedy on BBC1 recently and it took me about ten minutes to realise who he was! I hadn't realised until then, either, that he was a scriptwriter for Chewin' The Fat.
That documentary reignited an interest and love of Scots language, btw, that I'd all but lost over the years. It was fun to be reminded of how many great words we have to describe things.
Anyone want to share their favourite Scots words?
And what's everyone's favourite Still Game episode? It's difficult to choose, but for me it has to be the one where Jack was dating the woman from the charity shop and Victor got landed with that monster of a sister. I could not breathe for laughing at his reactions to her. It also contains my very favourite Isa moment - where she takes a very, long route of connecting about a thousand people to get to the point and barely takes a breath for ten minutes in recounting it. (Second only to Winston pointing the remote control at her in an attempt to 'mute' her ranting on. LOL!)

Meet the Magoons is side-splittingly funny, I love it! The bit where Nittin's Dad mixed his metaphors a couple of weeks ago ("It's not rocket surgery!") kept me chuckling away to myself for the rest of the weekend.
Sanjeev Kholi (Navid in Still Game) is the cousin of Hardeep Singh-Kholi who plays Hamish in Meet the Magoons. Another cousin (who's name escapes me for the moment) is an Inspector (I think) with the Metropolitan Police in London.

It's the greatest attraction in Ayr after the electric brae! Llamas, ducks, swans, quad bikes, trampolines and dry ski slopes. It's brilliant. In fact, to quote that billboard outside Prestwick airport, it's "Pure dead brilliant".

*Shrugs shoulders* After reading this thread i know OF them!! But no, never heard them. Sorry!! I love bagpipes as much as the next Scot, but i've never gone out of my way to buy a CD. Alcohol and knives, and drugs. All of these things come back to education. When I was in military schools, nobody ever fought with anyone else, nobody was unhappy, there was no bullying, everyone did well in their grades. I left military schools and went to a civilian school and on my first day there, three fights and because I had came from Germany I was called a Nazi, despite the fact that the Nazis had been put out over 50 years prior and that I was a British citizen, but it highlighted the ignorance that is allowed to grow in public schools.

That's terrible. Not just the fact you were called the name, that's bad enough, but also because how could anyone be that stupid? A friend of mine pointed out about a year ago when we were talking that he thought only 3 people (im glad to say i was included in it) in our group (about 10-15 people) would know where Auschwitz was. And i was inclined to believe him. It's a sad day when people don't know even basic details about one of the, if not the, most horrific events of the last century.
This will sound pretty daft given most people on here probably still consider me a kid, but has anyone noticed that most kids from about P5- S3 are really cocky and arrogant? It's really annoying. I mean, back when i was in S1, i would never have even considered mouthing off at folk older me, let alone sixth years and teachers but these days they think nothing of shouting their cuss words at random people and playing football off shop windows.

They tried to use "team building exercises" in one of my former places of employment. Didn't work, the guy got shoved up against the wall, and was then told where to go and exactly what he could do with his team building exercises when he got there.

Oh aye! Top quality banter's an essential part of work! It's horrible when new folk start though, and you just don't know what to say... i always start with a joke or a stupid question like "Out of all the cat food cats, who would win in a fight?". (if you're wondering, the correct answer is apparently whiskas cos he's got the experience!!) If anyone's wondering, my group came 27th out of 32!!! We did well in part 1, but when it came to the "problem solving" and the banter started flowing, we ended up just joking about!! For example, we had to build a bridge over about a metre out of a pack containing paper, paper clips, string, a tomato, an egg and anything else we could find. Ours was not bad, until it came to giving it a shot.....lets just say, it was like a really poor quality skipping rope!! :D We also had to make a presentation, needless to say we ended up playing rock paper scissors while preparing and it didn't go to well....

And I don't demand that people love Scotland...yes I do like to 'bum up' my area (because it's pretty :D) but if people don't like Scotland, I won't ask why...there's plenty of countries I'm none too fond of. So I won't get up on my high horse and say 'you must like Scotland'
and I'm babbling...sorry :o

People (IE those from down South) seem to forget that if it wasn't for a Scotsman, there'd be no television...;)

Thinks I dislike about Scotland:
Not being able to get English newspapers (I don't 'do' Scottish sport)
Midgies
BBC Scotland (always has a different schedule, constantly recording wrong programmes)
Things I lurve about Scotland
Irn Bru
The scenery (most beautiful country in Britain IMO)
The music
Kilts (men look so ******* sexy in 'em)
Scottish pride...ok we might be a bit excessive here but at least we're patriotic :D
It's just a much nicer place to live than England.

Hmm....
Things i dislike:
Neds. The bane of my existence for 6 years. (Incidently, i had an idea. After reading about how the vigilante system was working in gotham city in America, i was thinking i might give that a go over here.... :P :D)
Scottish stereotypes of us chasing Haggii round the highlands in kilts while playing bagpipes, drinking whisky and shouting "Och' aye the noo'"!!!
Things i like: (this is probably gonna be a long list...:))
Irn Bru (drinking it right now..)
(complete opposite to SueKay) The Rain. Just like Mel Gibson described it in Braveheart, as "good Scottish weather". It's become my catchphrase at Uni when it's raining and all the folk i hang with start whining... i love it.
Whisky/Tennents
Scenery
Scottish women. Need i say more?! :)
Just the general atmosphere.

Things I dislike about Scotland;
Highers - they are viewed as second-class in comparison to A-levels, which peeves me off! (Or they were when I was applying to Uni - has this changed now?)
Whisky :S
Our football team :S :S
Things I like about Scotland;
Ewan MacGregor :p
Pipe bands
Kilts
Our accents
The scenery
Irn Bru

Dislike: English arrogance. Persons who live South of the border, seem to think our wonderful country is some vast cultural wasteland.
Neds. Round 'em up, ship 'em off to Iraq, put 'em to work clearing minefields - pointy stick optional.
Like: Irn Bru (yum). Fish & chips (double yum).:D
