There are cons in Scotland if you know where to look for 'em. Just not any Stargate ones - yet.
Saturday, 27th October 2007 - "Behind the Mask", a one day event for fans of Dr. Who, Quality Central Hotel, Glasgow. Guests include Sophie Aldred, Deborah Watling, Caroline Munro, Paul Darrow, with our genial compere Charlie Ross.
Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November 2007 - "PartyCon 2007", Quality Central Hotel Glasgow. No guests, just fun! Games, quizzes, competitions and copious amounts of booze.
And just announced, for the weekend of 19th to 21st September 2008 - "Highlander: Homecoming - Glasgow 2008 Ten Years Later". No guests yet, but the comittee is in negotiations.

Hullo folks,
I wanted to let you all know I am seriously considering moving home. Possibly Dundee, more likely Perth at this point. Setting aside the fact its home and my family are there, house prices in south west England make things impossible down here, so I have to do something! I wanted to know if anyone has any insight on costs such as council tax, rent, mortgages etc? I am going to do a lot of research myself, but I wanted to see if you have any ideas!
Any thoughts, advice or even just a 'look forward to seeing you' would be much appreciated!

Perth's nice. I was there at the weekend seeing some friends.
We had a lovely meal on Saturday night in the Capital Asset, a totally gorgeous pub, used to be a bank way back when - hence the name.

I think our best bet for a Glasgow Convention is probably Wolf
I know they said that they wouldn't do another event in Scotland due to low attendance, but Starfury had an event last year that was a success, and Collectormania is also now doing successful Glasgow shows
Heck, even the David Hewlett fans are having their own Squirrel Convention in Glasgow this summer!
I say if we want a convention in Glasgow, the best thing we can do is to post on the Wolf boards - the more of us that post, the more likely it'll be that we can get another event up here, and I'd probably be able to get together quite a group of people who's want to go to it! :)

Being perfectly honest, I seriously doubt that Wolf will bring an event of any kind north of the border.
Brian Cooney is perfectly willing to do a con in Scotland, but there's this whole clique of nay-sayers that surround him "Oh you don't want to run an event in Scotland, no one will come..." and so on.
Well, excuse me - but between 1991 and 2001 the annual Scottish Star Trek Convention seemed to do pretty damn good!
You had folk coming in from all over the bloody place, not just the UK. IIRC, at the 2001 con there were a couple of Klingons who turned out to be members of the Dutch Marines.

It was a bizarre incident...I was in the Thistle Hotel, on my own, having just had a very strange meeting with my Modern Studies teacher who was desperately trying to avoid the subject he was at a convention (making up excuses that he thought this was a Buffy convention and that he was there with his daughter).
After he'd wandered off, two klingons appeared...one grabbed me in a headlock, while another took our picture! Then he said thanks, shook my hand and walked off.
Then I tripped over a mini-MALP...
Then I accidentally walked into Nicole DeBoer's other half.
Then Chase Masterson and Lolita Fatjo walked by wearing pyjamas!
'twas a very strange five minutes...

Actually, IIRC, FP Glasgow has a huge basement. I was at a signing there many many moons ago (probably when you was still in Primary school ;)) that had four or five guests.
You know that funny wee door you sometimes see the staff coming out of? That leads to the basement.

Message to all Scots...
Well the EU freakin beaurcrats are at it again......Heard the latest...
They want to ban Mince.....Again,they tries this about 10-15 year ago and didn't get away with it.....They're reason this time is that the meat lies too damn long and they don't want the French to get food poison with their steak tartare..........Now tell me what the freakin heck has steak tartare gotta do with our mince.....If this happens they'll be a freakin riot....
Why the hell should we be told what to eat by someone in Brussels...
This is the same people that tried to ban Bananas that were too curved and Cucumbers that weren't the right diameter and tried to make our national dress the Kilt be classed as Womanswear and have to have a licence to wear it.......The English tried to ban the Kilt Centuries ago and failed....
This is an attack on the Scots and our way of life.....
And that my friends is why i was always against joining the EU in the first place!!

Uhm...
As a student of EU politics...the whole thing with bananas and cucumbers was a load of piss concocted by a Euro-sceptic media.
The EU don't want to ban mince...they want to ban the amount of time the beef hangs for...Yes it'll affect the taste, but it's hardly picking on Scotland.
The media here will only report on the effects this move will have in Scotland...in reality it'll affect every EU nation who hang beef for a traditional time period.
For example, any knock-on effect of this in say, Austria, will be reported by the Austrian media, and there'll be no mention in their press of our mince.
At least the EU won't ban our flag, or our language, or force us from our homes, or force us to emmigrate abroad...unlike others...

Yes well they hang the meat for that length of time for a reason,if they hang it for any less it will destroy the taste and that ain't a good thing......We've been eating mince for as long as i can remember and i've never heard of anyone getting food poison from it......I'm sorry but i don't see why someone from Brussels should tell us how to live or what to eat......
Britain should have stayed British and not went European.....I never wanted us to join the EU in the first place but just like any other time the Politicians get a whim, they never ask us lowly people who vote them in what we want!!!

Well, the Noel Clarke signing went smoothly.
I think the highlight (other than meeting the man himself, who is a very nice guy) was when I was in the queue (in full UNIT uniform), there was a small child who asked to use my walkie-talkie to contact Torchwood.
Then he kept borrowing my Sonic Screwdriver to "control" the Clockwork Android (my buddy John G.)
Ahh, kids eh? :D

Cool, something else to create a detour form when I am heading towards Dundee to see family!
Incidentally folks I am pleased and relieved to say I am staying in Bristol. - I miss home but this is where I belong. At least for now.
Your pic Master B had me thinking of when I passed F Planet a year ago. The Glasgow branch always seems to have everything and while I was waiting at 6 in the morning for a bus, I did some window shopping. - They had Colonel Mitchell and Vala in the window before anywhere else had them! I made a special trip to get them both. I''ll be 33 at them end of the month, but in some respects I am still 10! I inted to do the same thing if and when Dr Beckett is ever made as a figure.
If the Who exhibition is on the move, I'd better hurry up and see it while its still in Cardiff.
My nostaliga to one side, what else has been happening at home?

Do any of you know about this?
It's a pretty professional Scottish Star Trek fan series!
http://www.starshipintrepid.net/
Oh yeah, their boss fella Nick Cook is an old friend of my boss fella in SG-999, Nick Procter.
I saw their pilot ep. "Heavy Lies the Crown" at my local sci-fi group some months ago.
Not quite up to the high standards of the Star Trek: New Voyages chaps, but It's pretty darned close.

New Voyages (or as they've just renamed themselves Star Trek: Phase II) are fantastic.
Once you get your head round the fact that it's not William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Deforrest Kelley et al playing the characters we know and love, I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Having viewed Heavy Wears the Crown, I have sent Intrepid my CV. I was well impressed.
I have seen all the existing eps of New Voyages / Phase Two so far. Its a cracking series and the people who work on it clearly care about what they are doing, it is very well made. Its completely changed my attitude to fan produced web series. - If you haven't seen it keep your eyes open for some famous guest stars from the original series.

I hate to say so, but I am not struck by this one. Simple reason being it is very similar in some respcts to one of my own ideas! I daren't look into it as I don't want to be accused of plagerisim further down the road!
By the way, is the theme from INtrepid based on something? Stylisitically it sounds similar to something besides Trek, (especially the closing credits) but I can't put my finger on what.

Anyone going to meet Paul McGillion at Collectormania Glasgow next weekend?
BruTak

Nope. Braehead's a bugger to get to from Greenock.
Besides, I'm saving up for Leuchars next month, and a Dr. Who con in November.

Get a train to Central, and then get a bus from Buchanan Street...that's what I'm doing
Edit: plus you're in Greenock...I think there's a few McGills buses that go to Braehead

Master Bru, / Suekay, - will you be getting pictures from these events?
I am on a tight budget myself so grounded in Bristol. But would love to see how you both get on!

If I remember to take photos, I will. :)
Chances are I'd just be using the camera in my phone, so I can't vouch for the quality. My digital camera just seems to eat batteries.
Having said that however, the pics I took with the phone camera at last year's Grampian Military Vehicle Show were not bad at all.

Oi! How come your chum Firefly gets to sawn around with a P90 and a Berretta and SG-999 get their collective ears chewed off?
Anyway, that first photo of Beckettspatient - I know the blonde lady sitting behind her!
That's the one and only (thank God) Ditzy Dalek from the Torchwood 2 group, and sitting next to her is her wee boy Scott. :)

Sorry I have been away Suekay - although Save Carson Beckett has ended, I have my hands full with something new, and just as important.
Nice to see Ms Sirtis is as lovely as ever. That lady takes care of herself! - Be kind to Mr Brendan - the poor man has been through a very tough time of it.
