BTW - Has anyone read the comments pages at Andy Murray's website?

I have never been so disgusted in my life...idiots on both sides of the divide...hope his site admin deletes the whole thing.

Anubis69
July 2nd, 2006, 10:59 AM
I heard about them. Disgusting, indeed. Although i heard that he got an amazing support yesterday so... :S

On the flip side i got myspace the other day and found a "Scotland Rocks" group. Genius... One of the anecdotes:

Well, as I just told an englishman who appeared rather down at his country's defeat after all of their trash talking, all of their promises, and all of their "The Scots are so racist for not supporting us! They'll look real silly when we win!"

I slapped him on the shoulder and said...

"Don't worry, have a mars bar :)"

He didn't seem to see the funny side....

Whoever Seraphina is, she's an absolute legend.
Check here for a full thing of things (http://forum.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=messageboard.viewThread&entryID=19249228&groupID=100247769&adTopicID=25&Mytoken=442CEDE5-BC18-44A6-A2281E381C1E776B708703093). Also sums up my reasoning for not supporting England at the WC nicely at the bottom of the page... Funnily enough, i remember saying that ages ago in the football thread and it defused the "tense" situation nicely..

Missster.Freeman
July 2nd, 2006, 11:01 AM
What's the URL? is it http://www.andymurraynews.com/? It looks like most of the comments have been deleted, but I've just seen one comment from an England fan saying "he doesn't deserve to be at Wimbledon and hopes his tennis career is very very short." :/

sueKay
July 2nd, 2006, 11:07 AM
no it was at http://www.andymurray.com at his blogs on the 30th

sueKay
July 2nd, 2006, 11:08 AM
a lot of them were saying that we're just jealous of England...that we were backwards and stupid and some other horrid things...though some of the Scots were just as bad IMO

silverdamascus
July 2nd, 2006, 11:25 AM
I'm just going to take your word for it. I fully believe what its like but I've no desire to expose myself to that kind of vitriol. Hope the poor bloke doesn't hear any of it himself.

I say, I say, I say! What goes beep-beep-beep-beep-beep-beep-beep? The England team's open topped bus reversing back into the garage. :jack_new_anime18:

Anyway, when (and indeed if) we get a GW Scotland meetup on the go, might I suggest Glasgow's Kelvingrove Museum and Art Gallery as a venue?

Um, dunno. When it is again? I know it's sometime the middle of this month, but my memory ain't what it used to be. ;)

sueKay
July 6th, 2006, 09:31 AM
It's the 11th :)

I'm going up cos I entered a competition about Kelvingrove a few years back, and I heard that cos it was so soon before they shut for the refurb, that my entry might still be on display :)

Curses and other naughty words! Sadly I won't be able to make it, I'll be skint after the weekend (I never have any money on a Tuesday anyway, but that's not the point).

I'm heading up to Perth tomorrow to spend the weekend with Nick and Kitty. It's Nick's birthday on Saturday (and mine on Sunday - but that's another matter entirely ;) ), and I've got a present he'll either love to bits, or i'll end up sleeping in a tent in the back garden...

absolutely roastin'!

to make matters worse, I've started work at the newsagents at Loch Lomond Shores...so when you do the math (small space, no air conditioning, and hundreds of sweaty tourists...)

Yeah me too, before today anyway... As it turns out, the sun was pretty strong and my "fair" skin took quite a burning by our rarely visible friend, the sun... *sigh* as i so hilariously discovered when i got in the shower... The curse of being blonde i guess... *strokes hair* :P :D

I use far too many of those '...' too :D

my skin's really fair, but when I was a kid, I once got really bad sunburn, and since then, I've just stayed white!

I've given up on fake tan though, cos the streaky bacon look just isn't appealing is it! :o :D

silverdamascus

This heat is not right. I'm too scared to actually go out in this with my skin, the heat is about to suffocate me anyway. Sulk. A friend from the states actually commented yesterday: "If it keeps up like this I'm going to forget I'm in Scotland."

I'd give anything to be swimming in the River Earn or Isla right now. - Is there any of that Ice Cream left? :mckayanime08: :beckettanime04:

Incidentally thanks to dipsofjazz and everyone else who reccomended the Caramel Waifers and tea - It did help!

I've never tried Nardinis - but it would be nice to have ice cream in this weather.

I love it - the only problem is being stuck at work.

Anubis69

Speaking of ads, there's one I love to bits - the Dodge Calibre. It's a focus group comprised entirely of generic stuffed animals getting asked what they think of the new car

Ah Elmo... Once again your shenanigans bring meteorological harmony in the form of precipitation. He can do almost anything you know! E.g. A cracking rendition of ELO's Mr Bright Sky, piloting your average zeppelin and travelling through time without a Delorian...... Some of those are made up. Try and guess which ones, i think you'll be pleasantly surprised!! (Oh jees, I've said if before and i'll say it again... i need to get out more.)

As to the weather, i like nice hot weather, until it interferes with sleep. Nothign better than a blistering hot day for a good game of football or cycling...

So how is everyone? The sun's still shining up here in Moray, it was really muggy yesterday but not so bad today. My only complaint is the amount of bugs that are flying around....there's loads, some really funky ones that I've never seen before....gives me the willies. :D

Anubis69
July 25th, 2006, 07:50 AM
LOL! Anyone imagining the bugs from "Bane"? ... No... me either... :D
Actually mentioning bugs... the flying ants are making an appearance these days... I haven't seen those in years. Terrifying creatures though. I was always terrified i was gonna swallow one during a particularly intense game of roller hockey...

As to the weather: Warm... Quite muggy. It's perfect though. It's not overly warm but warm enough to break out the old shorts from the bottom drawer!

Thanks sueKay - but's it's actually been quite nice here this evening. There was a spectacular thunderstorm just as I was leaving for work - forked lighting arrived at the same time as the train (and since we had to go over the Forth Rail Bridge a few people were rather worried) but I managed to miss most of the rain and stuff.

It's hot again now, but the sky has been clear most of the evening.

I know how my dad's side of the family got here, but I'm not sure how my mom's side got here. My pop's side came here from Poland and Russia. My grandpa's folks were Russian and came here after the Russo-Japanese war. My grandma's folks were Polish Germans and came here in 1919.

I think the earliest of my mom's ancestors came here shortly after the Mayflower to be boring-ass puritans. A couple of them I know searched for gold in Virginia. I have ancestors who've faught in every war since the French and Indian War, which you Europeans like to call the Seven Year War. And my mom's family is one of Texas' first families.

Thunder, lightning, and rain - at precisely 0220hrs yesterday morning.

How did I know the time? Simple the thunder woke me up (in the middle of a particularly odd dream) and I looked at my alarm clock just as the lightning flashed.
I had a gander out the window to find the streets awash with a torrential downpour. By the time I'd returned from answering a call of nature, at about 0225hrs, the rain was off.

Yeah, a lot of Americans get really into their ancestry. There's a whole lot of us over here who spend hundreds of dollars on tartans and the such and hold highland games of their own.

I guess I just have a different perspective on it because I'm an historian. . . . . . . okay, an historian in training.

My sister-in-law is from Galicia. I'll have to ask her about liquor prices. I know her father makes his own wine.

At our highland games, an American woman came up to her stall...she said she'd managed to get her piper son a kilt for $300 dollars, and that she'd gone to buy him one over here and the cheapest she could find was £600 (about $1100)!

The North/South thing is mostly friendly here, too.

Of course, the country's so big and we have so many different regions that it's not quite that simple.

If you talk to someone in South Carolina, a Texan isn't a Southerner, because Texas isn't part of the old south. Some people consider anyone in a former Confederate state to be a Southerner. Of course, anyone from a non-Confederate state is a Yankee. Unless you're talking to someone from New York or Pennsylvania or Massachusetts, 'cause only they are Yankees.

Then there's Texas.

sueKay

thing is...I don't really consider the US a country...it is literally a federation of nation states, and Texas has more autonomy from the rest of the US than Scotland has from the rest of the UK, depsite the fact that until 300 years ago, Scotland had always been a completely seperate country.

Anyhoo...I'm back home, and I had a great time!!

Anyhoo...I'm back home, and I had a great time!!

That's what the US originally was. Part of the reason the Civil War was faught was because states like South Carolina (especially South Carolina. . . they've always been a pain in the ass) and newly-admitted Texas were very independent and didn't think it was Washginton's place to interfere in internal State affairs.

Internal State affairs such as slavery.

The Federal government of the US was very small until Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal program. It really was quite tiny until the early 20th century. Very small standing Army and Navy, no national bank, no Federal Reserve system. Basically the Federal government was responsible for collecting taxes, paving some roads and delivering the mail. Thanks to the Great Depression, people stopped looking to themselves and local/State government and more towards the Federal government for help. Then you had the effects of World War II.

Until World War II, the actual US Army was very small. During time of war (including World War I), State militias would be federalized. So you didn't have people from Texas and Washington fighting together. You had entire divisions made up of homogeneus populations from their native states. That was changed in World War II with a much larger draft and the creation of new Infantry Divisons and an effort to train men the same way, no matter what State they were from.

So one hundred years ago, people would tend to look at themselves more as Virginians than Americans. Thanks to things like the New Deal and World War II (and the fact that so many people move across State lines to get new jobs, go to school, etc.), a person's State is more-or-less a secondary consideration to being American. Yeah. . . I'm majoring in US history. . .

I suspect that were France to ever get what they want, and have a real politically binding EU, that it would be very much like how things were early on in the US. In-so-far as people would still see themselves as French or Spanish more than European.

Anywho, happy to be home?

Tek'ma'tae Master B, am not bad at all! It may be a while before I am next home, (I'm thinking of the "Calling All Scots" meet up idea) but will keep you posted. In general, things are going quite well down here, tomorrow is the final day of the Bristol Balloon Fiesta. Hopefully I will be able to see the Night Glow, or Night Light as I like to call it!

I will keep you posted. - How are things your end?

I was just looking at BBC News and saw this (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/4791649.stm)

Nooooo! Life just won't be the same without Highland Toffee. *sobs*

Aw no way, I used to love their toffee, hell to eat but there was always this sense of achievement when you managed...:D

Here's a question for everyone: Ever find your sense of humour has been a little misunderstood here?

I've had more than one incident where some friendly teasing or humour has been taken utterly the wrong way. I'm just wondering if we Scots seem to have a rougher sense of humour than others or if its just me.

B-b-but... this.... why would they.... NOOOOOO!!!!!!

I think i'm gonna have to go buy out Spar's stock of Irn Bru bars and the like and sell 'em on ebay... Don't worry, you guys would get a wee discount. :P

As to the humour, a couple of times... these days i try and make it as obvious as i can and add a few smileys for added measure. I also try to avoid being too... well, myself, unless i know the person well enough to make some good natured jibes as i would to a mate! I do hope they know i'm joking though...

To answer your question, it's quite possible we're "rougher" with the banter than other places. I mean, just look at Still Game... There's nothing better than some joking insults like that, but in the end everyone knows it's just a joke...

It's not happened here often, but it has happened to me elsewhere. I think us Scots have an odd, darker sense of humour that can be taken the wrong way....basically we just like to take the piss. :D

Aaah! I loved Highlland Toffee and Wham bars - a big part of my childhood I still grab them when I see them now. :sheppardanime32: (We need a crying Beckett smiley)

Re my sense of humour - no one ever gets it. I am considered somewhat "random" and "ever ready" - don't ask about the second one, I think its all the punning!

It's like on the SG-999 discussion board, we all know each other and regularly take the rip out of each other's wee quirks and foibles.

HJ, for example seems to think he's God's gift to the opposite sex. Whereas in reality, he's this mutant offspring of Austin Powers and the Fonz, with Jimmy Osmond's teeth no less...

We take the mick out of John G. cos he'd led such a sheltered childhood. Until recently he'd never seen The Magnificent Seven, and I distinctly remember him giving me a blank look when I make a reference to Phil Silvers and Sgt. Bilko.

But in spite of all that, or maybe because of it, we're all still friends cos wee all know we're only kidding.

well someone once took exception to my humour and said "You know sarcasm is the lowest form of wit" to which I replied well I know my place then. Off they went rather confused. I can quite happily take the mick out of myself as well as others

You know something I think that's just about the best description I've heard of Scots humour yet! :D

Well not entirely, we have other forms of humour other than sarcasm, though it does always seem to be a little sharp doesn't it? Either that or everyone else is just oversensitive!

:D I suppose that's it. We're so used to taking the mickey out of ourselves and our pals that we forget that other folk aren't used to it and maybe take offence.

The Universitys with the best reputations in Scotland are known as the Ancient's funnily enough, four of them - St. Andrew's, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. All built around the C15th/16th. So yeah, Aberdeen Uni is a good one :D

I'm at Caledonian, which doesn't have much of a reputation because it's so new.
